The present catalogue covers artificial lift surface equipment Triol AK series for control and protection of submersible electric motors. It contains information related to application, functionality, technical characteristics, connection diagrams, and overall dimensions.

For your convenience the products are divided into two sections containing information about models with NEMA enclosures and with IP43 enclosures for indoor/outdoor installation in a cold climate (according to industry standard GOST 15150-69). The catalogue covers three series, AK01, AK02, and AK06, with detailed descriptions for all models. Our equipment is a good solution for specific environmental conditions of Middle East, Asian Pacific, South America and Siberia.

versions and location categories». This is a normative document which defines the requirements to a product related to influence of temperature and precipitation during its storage and use in different climatic zones and locations.

This document identifies durability requirements for a product in relation to influence of temperature and precipitation during storage and usage of the product at different climatic zones and types of placement.

Also this document specifies possible versions depending on precipitation volume, wind speed, and concentration of aggressive gases in the atmosphere.

Triol Corporation produces its equipment in two modifications: UHL1 and UHL4. Thus the equipment can be used in moderate and cold climates in non-aggressive environment. UHL1 ensures operation of the product outdoors at temperatures from –60 to +50°C (–76 to 122°F ); relative humidity of 75 % at 15°C (59°F) and 100 % at 25°C (77°F).

UHL4 version has some limitations: the products have to be used indoors in areas with air-conditioning (temperature from +1°C to +35°C (33.8 to 95°F) and relative humidity of 60 % at 20°C (68°F) and 80 % at 25°C (77°F).

The real maximum operating temperature for our products is +50°C (122°F).In order to meet the UHL requirements the products have enclosures with IP54

protection degree (protection from dust and drops of water at an angle of 60° from the vertical and complete protection from accidental contact with any current-carrying parts) and are provided with internal heating system.

The UHL4 products have enclosures with IP20 protection degree. Such enclosures do not protect the product from water drops and moisture, but they protect the user from accidental contact with any live parts.

Compliance of AK variable speed drives in UHL1 version to IP43 is provided with the following:• cooling duct of power semiconductors and DC-link chokes is totally isolated from

the power compartment;• system of locks and sealing on doors ensures air-tightness of the compartment with

power and electronic elements;• all control devices of the variable frequency drive are protected with an additional

sealed door;• all cold-sensitive power and electronic devices are provided with pre- heating and

heating during operation if necessary;• algorithm of the cooling system operation prevents freezing of moving parts of fans.

Triol Corporation has made a step forward by releasing products with protection classes NEMA 3, 4, and 4X according to standard NEMA 250.1.

Equipment with NEMA 3 enclosures is intended for indoor and outdoor use and provides protection against rain and snow. The enclosure also protects the user from accidental contact with live parts. In general it exceeds the performance requirements of IP55.

Equipment with NEMA 3 enclosures is intended for outdoor use and provides protection against dust and moisture similar to IP66 in the temperature range from minus –20 to +60°C (–4 to +140°F). The NEMA4X differs from NEMA4 in its corrosion resistance.

To satisfy the requirements of class NEMA4/4X Triol Corporation has developed an air-tight cabinet with a special type of covering that withstands all necessary tests. For the most demanding applications there is a version with the cabinet made of stainless steel which provides unique protection from corrosive medium and is suitable for equipment to be used at manufacturing plants or offshore platforms.

The NEMA4 protection class of VSD AK series is provided by:• Special corrosion-resistant fans that are also resistant to dust and sand;• Built-in heat exchangers for removing heat from the power compartment providing

operation at ambient temperatures of up to +60°C (+140°F);• Dust and sand catchers allow operation of the cooling system in dusty environments;• Corrosion resistance of the enclosure is provided by a special paint coating while

that of the DC-link chokes is provided by special compound they are impregnated with (for NEMA4);

• The highest corrosion resistance is provided by an enclosure made of stainless steel while the cooled DC-link chokes are impregnated with special compound (for NEMA4H);

• To remove moisture from air-tight compartments special unidirectional IP66 diaphragms and dehumidifier based on Peltier elements are used.

The power circuit with 6-pulse rectifier (Graetz bridge) is shown in the Figure. With this topology there is voltage ripple with a frequency of 300 Hz at the output of the rectifier bridge. For smoothing the current waveform an LC-filter is applied. The filter reduces harmonic emission into the power network.

When using AK VSDs in networks with strict requirements to waveform distortion it is recommended to use a three-phase filter.

The 12-pulse rectifier is the most widespread solution at the moment as it is much better than 6-pulse scheme in terms of harmonic emission into the mains.

There are two versions of the four-winding isolation transformers available: dry type (for indoor installation) and oil type (for outdoor installation). This gives maximum flexibility when selecting a solution depending on the available floor space, installation costs, and permissible load on the air-conditioning system used to maintain the desired room temperature.

Presence of non-linear loads causes the higher order harmonics (5, 7, 11, and higher) to appear in the network. It has a negative effect on equipment as a whole (additional heating of wiring, inefficient use of energy, reducing life of insulation, overheating of transformers, etc.)

To limit such distortions appropriate technologies and standards were introduced. This process has been quite successful in the sense that the problems faced by consumers almost always arise due to the conditions that appear in their own area of responsibility, and only rarely are brought from the mains. If this situation continues consumers will have to limit the level of harmonic current created by their equipment. Consequently consumer is the one who should provide filtering of harmonic components where necessary.

There are several methods of reducing the harmonic currents flowing into the mains during operation of semiconductor converters. One of such methods is the use of passive resonant filters that are bulky and have some other shortcomings.

A more advanced method is the active interference suppression which is achieved by injecting into the network harmonic currents that are equal to those already present in the network but are opposite in phase.

Total harmonic distortion in the input current for this VSD is less than 5% which totally complies with IEEE519. The AK06 VSD with active harmonic filters does not need bulky passive filters or use of 12, 18, or 24-pulse phase shifting transformers, since it can be fed from an ordinary two winding transformer (one primary and one secondary windings). Also the active filter provides fast response to changes in current harmonic composition resulting in the most effective interference suppression.

Operation with downhole sensors

The NEMA type drives Triol АК01, АК02, and АК06 provide operation with the following downhole sensors:

• «Triol» — «Triol TMT» produced by Triol Corporation;• «Borets» — produced by Borets LLC;• «Electon» — produced by Electon;• «Izhevsk» — produced by JSC «Izhevsk radio manufacturing plant»;• «WoodGroup» — Smartguard produced by Woodgroup;• «Phoenix» — Phoenix produced by REDA (Shlumberger);• «SKAD-2002» — SKAD-2002 produced by BelNipineft;• «Novomet» — produced by Novomet.

Installation of the surface units for the sensors can be done both inside and outside the VSD. Reception and transmission of data is carried out by means of protocols RS-232 or RS-485. Supply voltage for the downhole units is 220 V.

Operation with SCADA

The NEMA type drives Triol АК01, АК02, and АК06 can be interfaced to SCADA. Data is transmitted over the RS-485 protocol. Automatic tuning of communication is possible for the following protocols:

• «Triol» — setting of communication channel for «Triol» protocol;• «Region» — communication channel for «Region 2000» protocol;• «Telescope» — communication channel for «Telescope» protocol;• «Salym Pet» — communication channel for «Salym» protocol.

With the protocol Modbus RTU it is possible to communicate with the dispatching station.

The NEMA type drives Triol АК01, АК02, and АК06 can be provided with custom digital and analog inputs for connecting various sensors.
