A fewminutes hike from the lodge is a beautiful oldgrowth patch of Brazil Nut forest that has beenharvestedfordecades(ifnotcenturies)wheretheprecariousremainsofacampusedtwomonthsayear by Brazil Nut gatherers can still beexperienced.Wewillbedemonstratingthewholeprocess of the rain forest's only sustainableharvested product from collection throughtransportation to drying. After dinner it isprogrammed a night walk. Day 3: After breakfastwewill visit a parakeetclay lick. A fifteen minute boat ride and sixtyminute walk from Refugio Amazonas is aparakeet clay lick. From a blind you will seeparakeetsdescendonmostcleardaysto ingestthe clay on a bank. Species such as DuskyheadedandCobaltwingedParakeetdescendatthis clay lick. We visit the lick at dawn, whenparrots are most active or in midmorning orearlyafternoon,whentheyareactive.Mammalclaylick:Twentyminuteswalkingfrom

RefugioAmazonasisapeccaryclaylick.Thesewildrainforestpigsshowupinherdsoffivetotwentyindividualstoeatclayinthelatemorning.Chancesofspottingthemarearound15%,butwellworththeshorthike.Otherwildlifealsoshowsupincludingdeer,guanandparakeets. After lunchwewill headon to theCanopy towers. A thirtyminutewalk fromRefugioAmazonasleadstothe25meterscaffoldingcanopytower.Abanisterstaircaserunningthroughthemiddle provides safe access to the platforms above. The tower has been built upon high ground,therefore increasing your horizon of the continuous primary forest extending out towards theTambopataNational Reserve. ArequipaandColcaCanyon.4d/3n.Arequipa is the second biggest city inPeru.Itislocatedatanaltitudeof2,380masl (7,740 ft.) and it’s the entrance tothe Colca Canyon and the Volcano’sValley. The city lies in the highlands atthe foot of the snow‐capped volcano ElMisti. El Misti is currently inactive, buteruptedstronglybetween1438and1471.Arequipa has many fine colonial‐eraSpanish buildings built of sillar, a pearlywhite volcanic rock used extensively inthe city, and from which it gets itsnickname La Ciudad Blanca ("the whitecity"). In December 2000, UNESCOdeclaredthehistoricalcenterofArequipaa World Heritage Site, stating thefollowing:"ThehistoricalcenterofArequipaisanexampleofornamentedarchitecture,representsamasterpiece of the creative coalition of European and native characteristics. The Colca Canyon, twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, is in theprovinceofCayllomaandtheCotahuasicanyonisintheprovinceofLa Union. Colca Valley provides incredible close‐up views ofmajestic Andean condors soaring in their natural habitat.Cotahuasi, at 3535meters is presently thought to be the deepestcanyon in the world.
