Trips Guide
Dear Parent/Carer
At Archbishop Temple School, we believe that extra-curricular trips,
workshops and educational visits organised by the school can
enhance a pupil’s learning. We run a range of trips and visits across
the UK and abroad.
Pupils are given the opportunity to visit Berlin, France, Iceland, New
York, Poland, Spain and the Italian ski resort of Pila as well as
destinations closer to home including London and Northumberland.
This booklet was devised to provide an overview of the
extra-curricular trips on offer throughout a pupil’s time at
Archbishop Temple School. All residential trips are paid for in
increments to enable parents/carers to budget accordingly.
Please note that trips are subject to change and all trip deposits are
non-refundable. If your child is in receipt of free school meals
financial assistance may be offered, please see the relevant trips
letter for further information. Trip information is correct at the time
of publication.
Yours Faithfully

Ardèche and Mimosa
The PE department organise a very exciting adventure week in
France. Pupils spend the first half of the week in Ardèche, France
where they will embark on a two to three day, 19 mile, canoe
descent through the spectacular Ardèche Gorge.
As well as canoeing pupils will take part in other activities such as a
Jacobs Ladder high ropes activity, kayaking and archery.
After three days in Ardèche pupils take an excursion to
a local water park, on their way to Mimosa, South of France.
Pupils learn to sail a range of craft including catamarans,
windsurfers and sit-on kayaks.
Throughout the week, centre teams lead evening entertainment sessions to keep everyone busy - including a nightly disco. The PE department organise the trip to reward pupils for good behaviour, not only in PE but throughout school. Pupils must have shown commitment and dedication to school sport. The trip has many benefits—other than having fun pupils will develop a variety of skills; communication, leadership, teamwork, responsibility and more. Due to this week being mainly based on water we can only allow pupils who can swim for their own safety due to the number of pupils going on the trip.

persecution of minorities under the Nazi regime.
The pupils will take part in a guided tour of Krakow’s Jewish
Quarter, focusing on the Jewish Ghetto, Schindler’s factory and the
universities. The second day is a full day at Auschwitz-Birkenau
looking at the two different sites. During this visit the students
will have a guided tour learning about what happened at these

Berlin
In year 11 the History Department offer pupils the opportunity to
go on a trip to Berlin to further investigate the rise of Hitler and the
Nazi party.
The pupils take part in a guided tour of Berlin, focusing on some of
the buildings and places most important in Hitler’s rise to power
such as the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz and
Göring’s Air Ministry buildings. They also visit the
Topography of Terror museum, a fascinating exhibition contained
within the former cellars of Gestapo HQ, illustrating the terrors and
crimes of the Nazi era. While in the centre of Berlin we take the
time to remember the victims of Nazi rule and visit the
Holocaust memorial, this memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe
is an emotional and imposing addition to the landscape of central
Berlin.

The group travel further afield by coach and visit
Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp and have a guided tour of
the Olympic Stadium, focusing on Hitler’s use of propaganda
once he established himself as dictator of Germany.
The opportunity to visit these sites will give pupils a far deeper
understanding of this period of history and will help them with
background knowledge needed for their History GCSE. In
addition to this, it would be a tremendous chance to visit an
area of intense historical and emotional importance, and try to
understand how a country so similar to Britain allowed
themselves to be controlled by history’s most evil leader.
Iceland
The Geography Department give students the chance to visit the
'land of ice and fire', studying geography in Iceland in a four day field
visit to Reykjavik and the surrounding area. Studying the
opportunities the natural environment provide to the people of
Iceland through tourism and the uses of geo-thermal energy, as well
as the challenges a harsh climate and tectonic hazards present.
Three full day excursions led by an NST approved Icelandic guide
allow pupils to experience glaciers, volcanoes, earthquake
simulations, geo-thermal pools and black sandy beaches. Iceland is
the earth’s most geologically active zone and pupils visit a variety of
geological active sites, including the opportunity to walk around a
volcanic crater and between the huge North American and Eurasian
plate boundary; this is the only place on earth this can be done!
The Golden Circle Adventure and the South Shore Adventure include
many, many attractions such as Strokkur, the famous geyser which
projects boiling water 60ft into the sky every 7 minutes! We see
first-hand how this energy is harnessed spending the morning at the
geothermal power station with guided tours, interactive
demonstrations and a chance to see the giant volcano at the side of
the plant! Natural geo-thermal pools allow some hours of relaxation
before the next day’s adventure!
We also visit the site of the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, visiting
the museum at the foot of the volcano and meeting the family who
still farm the land in the shadow of this active volcano. There are
shopping and sight-seeing opportunities in Reykjavik as well as
unique restaurants for evening meals booked all over the city
(included in the price). Pupils also play games and experience the
midnight sun on the beach and receive a private tour of the
national football stadium to complete the evening entertainment.

Music Trips
In previous years the Music Department has taken groups of
young musicians on cultural visits to other countries. In 2013 the
department visited Austria and in 2014 the destination was
Spain. The Music Department took the decision not to travel in
2015 to prepare for our big adventure in New York in 2016!
In July 2016 Archbishop Temple School’s young musicians
performed in New York. This thrilling adventure packed in
performances on a decommissioned aircraft carrier, Liberty Island
and in the foyer of the United Nations building. Pupils also had
the opportunity to do some sightseeing around the Big Apple
taking in the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Centre.
They also had time to do some shopping at Macy’s and enjoy a
jazz concert at Birdland Jazz Club.
Our school bands really enjoy performing to new audiences as
well as exploring the host country and enjoying music from the
area.
In 2017, the school’s Senior Percussion Group and Senior Concert
Band performed at the prestigious World Music Contest in
Kerkrade in Holland, they did fantastically well achieving Bronze
Awards. Bands from across the globe competed at this renowned
international competition. The Senior Concert Band also played in
Trier, Germany and there was a joint recital in the stunning
surroundings of Johanneskirche in Dusseldorf. The pupils also
enjoyed a day of fun at Phantasialand as well as a tour of Adams
Percussion Factory.
As well as performing in other countries, our senior and junior
concert and percussions bands and choir, take part in competitions
and events across the UK. These exciting challenges enable our
young musicians to perform to different audiences and experience
performing in some of the UK’s best concert venues.
This year all pupils in year 7 were invited to Royal Philharmonic
Hall in Liverpool for a music spectacular. As well as listening to the
orchestra pupils joined in with songs and sign language practised
before this very enjoyable trip.
