Looking for something to do that involves the whole family? Love farms and animals? Then mark your calendars for the 18th Annual Washington County, New York, Farm and Fiber Tour, which will take place this year on 12 different farms across Washington County, April 24 and 25.

The event is free and open to the public and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The Farm and Fiber Tour, and most events at the indi-

vidual farms, will take place rain or shine - so dress for the weather. Washington County is an easy hour’s drive from Albany, Saratoga Springs and southern Vermont; and only half a day from New York City, Rochester, and Boston.

Farmers across the county will open their barns, fields, and shops to allow visitors of all ages to meet their sheep and lambs, alpacas, llamas, and rabbits. Join them to learn about breeding and raising fiber animals including shearing and fiber processing. Some farm-ers will also demonstrate how they spin, dye, felt or weave with their animals’ fibers.

Visitors can purchase beautiful fiber products at the farms including soft shorn fleeces, roving for spinning, yarn and supplies for knitting and crocheting, fiber carding and spinning equipment, and handmade items such as felted scarves and knitted socks. Cooked lamb will be available for tasting. In addition, some of the participating farms will offer other activities such as fun projects for kids, tips for evaluating and selecting fleeces for fiber projects, needle felting workshops, and drop spindle spinning instruction.

Self-Care Workshop

On Saturday, April 17, 2010, the First Baptist Church of Bennington, Vermont, will offer a free self-care workshop open to the entire community. Entitled “Exploring the Riches of God’s Grace: Pathways to Physical and Spiritual Wholeness,” the work-shop introduces helpful ways for tending one’s soul and various holistic methods for self care. The Reverend Sharon Hughes, the minister of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Rutland, Vermont, leads the workshop.

The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (simple lunch included) at First Baptist, which is located at 601 Main Street in downtown Bennington. Gardening Workshop

A gardening workshop designed for families will be offered at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Saturday, April 24 from 2-4 p.m.

The Fellowship’s meetinghouse is at 108 School Street.

Workshop activities will include starting plants for you and others and planning con-tainer gardens. You can also learn about the grow a row pro-gram and decorate pots for cre-ative gifts. There will be ideas and information to help you with growing your own veggies and flowers.

This special free program is a family event for all ages. Materials are supplied (and donations will be accepted).

Who Works for You? The concept of representation is a very important one yet can be

confusing to sellers, buyers and even realtors. In Vermont, we are required to talk about representation (sometimes called agency) with our potential sellers and buyers at the first significant meeting and before we either enter into a contractual agreement or show properties. The customer will be asked to sign a Consumer Information Disclosure stating that they understand and have received a copy of this disclosure - this is not a contract.

It is important to know that until you sign a contract with a realtor and hire that realtor to either represent you in the sale of your property or represent you as a buyer in finding you property, you are not repre-sented by anyone.

Be careful what you disclose as confidential to your situation in regards to a purchase or sale - in other words - don’t show your hand. Once you hire a realtor to represent you in a transaction, at that point, you become a client and your agent then has fiduciary duties to you as the client, one of which is confidentiality.

There are many components to representation so be sure to discuss this with the realtor you are working with and don’t hesitate to ask ques-tions to be sure you are clear as to where you stand in that relationship.

Center for Restorative Justice Hosts Prom Dress Drive

Do you have a prom dress you wore a few years ago and will most likely never wear again? Or a cocktail dress you just can’t squeeze into any more? What about a dress you wore in a wedding two years ago taking up space in your closet?

If you have a gently used dress you no long want or need, the Center for Restorative Justice (CRJ) would love to help your dress find a new owner. CRJ is collecting prom dresses and is inviting all area high school girls in need of a dress to come by and browse through the beautiful donations.

Last year, CRJ hosted its first Prom Dress Drive and was able to help over a dozen young ladies attain beautiful dresses. “Many of the girls who came by last year to get a prom dress told us that had they not been able to get one of the donated dresses, they would not have been able to attend their high school prom.” stated Leitha Cipriano, CRJ Executive Director. “Sponsoring this project is something CRJ is very happy to host for the youth of our community.” This year, Bennington Dry Cleaners has also teamed up with CRJ and has agreed to donate their services to dry clean the dresses.

Peace Resource Center Sponsors Film Showing

The Peace Resource Center will present a showing of the film, “Birdsong & Coffee: A Wake Up Call” at the Unitarian Universalist Meetinghouse in Bennington on Friday, April 23 at 7 p.m. A discussion period will follow the film.

“Birdsong” explores the connections between farm families, farming communities, and entire ecosystems in coffee-growing regions like Costa Rica. The documentary gives voice to experts and students, cof-fee lovers and bird lovers, and — most importantly — to coffee farmers themselves. We learn how their lives and ours are inextricably linked, economically and environmentally, as they describe the labor intensive process of shade-grown coffee production.

Twenty-five million coffee growers worldwide are paid a mere pit-tance in the corporate marketplace while bearing the full brunt of global price fluctuations. When prices crash, farmers and their families suffer. The land is often cleared for other crops or other means of liveli-hood. Such clearing of the land – like the more “efficient” process of sun-grown coffee production – disrupts the ecosystem in ways that have deadly consequences for migratory songbirds, in particular, and for global ecological balance, in general.

“Birdsong” offers effective solutions - simply by changing our buying habits, we coffee consumers can not only guarantee farmers a fair price, but also protect the songbirds that visit our backyard feeders.

The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be available for purchase. The Bennington Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is co-sponsor of the event which takes place in their Meetinghouse at 108 School Street in Bennington; ample free parking is available across the street. of used prom dresses. The dresses will be sold to future prom-goers for $25 each. Proceeds will provide scholarships for girls to attend the Rosie’s Girls Summer Program.

Federal ExaminationThe Federal Examination for all classes of amateur radio operators

license (ham-radio) will be administered on Thursday, April 15. The exam will be administered at the main auditorium of the main hospital building of the Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Registration starts at 6:30 p.m., with the exams to commence at 7 p.m.

Applicants are requested to bring positive identification and copies of previous licenses. Cost for the exam is $15.

Miss Vermont Outstanding TeenNhung Kim Ngo and Marina Jeanette Calvo, both members of

Future Business Leaders of America and students at Mount Anthony Union High School are participating in the Miss Outstanding Teen Pageant in order to gain experience and share what they have learned with the youth in our community.

The mission of the not-for-profit Miss Vermont Scholarship Organization, Inc., is to provide a venue for young women of Vermont to earn scholarships for higher education while growing into successful leaders, participating in relevant community service, developing unique talents, and enhancing personal confidence, grace and style

CET Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Earth Day

The Center for Ecological Technology (CET) will host a Green Accessibility Ramp dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony on Earth Day, April 22, at 11 a.m. at its office at 112 Elm Street in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

This event is planned to mark the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day. CET recently completed construction of an environmentally friendly

accessibility ramp at the Elm Street office. The ramp incorporates green building practices and environmentally preferable products includ-ing decking of black locust wood (Forest Certified), the installation of Techno Metal Posts for supports, and framing using wood infused with recycled glass. Hand and safety railings are made of aluminum which requires no additional maintenance over its lifetime. An automatic electric door opener has also been installed to make public access to CET easier. The ramp was designed by Hill Engineers with input from CET’s Green Team and constructed by Restoration Inc. of Dalton.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting Morningside Initiative is hosting a Crime Prevention and Public

Safety subcommittee with Neighborhood Watch as the topic. This meeting will be held on Thursday, April 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Morningside Community School Cafeteria, 100 Burbank Street, Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

This meeting is for people who live, work or own property in the Morningside Initiative area who want to participate in neighborhood watches and learn more about making our neighborhoods safer. All area residents and business members are encouraged to attend.

The Morningside Initiative area includes East Street from Park Square, up North Street to Springside Avenue, to Benedict Road, to Tyler Street Extension, to Woodlawn Avenue, Kellogg Street to Fourth Street around Silver Lake Boulevard and back on East Street returning to Park Square.

Pets of the Week Available at Second Chance Animal Center

Trudy is a 3 year old torti. She was a stray who was brought to SCAC to find a home of her own. Trudy is outgoing, friendly and affectionate. She loves attention and she likes to be held. She will make a wonderful companion.

Pupo is a three year old Husky-Labrador Retriever mix who came to Second Chance because he and his doggy-sib-ling killed the neighbor’s fowl, repeatedly, and it became quite an issue between the families. At first, Pupo had no interest in hunting, but Zeus taught his younger brother how much fun it was. Pupo is a mellow guy, for his breed mix, and will require a weight loss management plan in order for him to become his healthiest. He has a beautiful and thick coat that will need a lot of grooming and maintenance. We recommend a home with chil-dren seven years and older. Other dogs may be possible upon intro-duction, but we do not, however, recommend a home with cats. If

you are looking for a big baby to cuddle and play with, then come meet our hungry Pupo!

Cookies & Cream is 2 years old. Her previous owner died and the family she was living with was very active and it was too much for her. Cookies & Cream is shy at first introduction but comes out of her shell once she knows you. She is affectionate and likes attention on her terms. Please come see our magnificent girl.

Arlington Community Public Health Nursing Service Scholarship

The Arlington Nursing Service is happy to announce that there will be one scholarship available for the 2010/11 school year.

The scholarship is available to residents of Arlington, Sunderland, and Sandgate who are pursuing an education in a health related field. This scholarship is not limited to graduating seniors; interested parties of all ages are encouraged to apply.

This award of $1000 per year will be renewed for up to four years provided the student continues in their chosen studies.

April Vacation Workshops for the Kids Are you looking for something for the kids to do during April

Vacation? The Bennington Museum has something for you. On April 13, 14, and 15 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bennington Museum’s Vacation Workshops offer interesting and unique activities including Amazing Architecture, Environment Explorers, and Move It! Fun and educa-tional activities comprise the programs that run from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Designed with little people in mind (ages 7-10), the price per workshop is $10 per child for members and $15 per child for non-members. A small snack will be provided, and it is suggested that children “dress for a mess.” Space is limited and advance registration is required, so call early.

Wednesday, April 14 – “Environment Explorers” – It’s National Environmental Education Week. Investigate the natural world in the museum’s backyard, and find out what you can do to save energy and protect the environment.

Thursday, April 15 – “Move It!” – The first public showing of a motion picture was held in April, 1896. Celebrating this event, find out how movies work, and make your own moving picture.

Inspired by Nature, Call to ArtistsIn celebration of its 50th anniversary in Vermont, The Nature

Conservancy and partners, the Bennington Center for the Arts and the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, are issuing a call to artists to create works of art that are inspired by the places that have been pro-tected by the Conservancy. Artists are invited to explore and be inspired by the sights and sounds, texture, color and light of the Conservancy’s more than 50 preserves and 100 locations around Vermont.

The idea of Inspired by Nature originated with East Dorset artist Nancy Howe, a trustee with the Conservancy. “Nature or landscape artists hope to communicate something they feel emotionally, to use their form of expression to wake us up to what we already intuitively understand — that the health and vitality of our natural environment has a profound effect on our own emotional, physical and spiritual well-being.”

All artists are eligible for consideration by the jury. Art must be original, current, two-dimensional in all media and inspired by the landscape, plants and animals of sites protected by the Conservancy. Submissions must be received by May 10. The Inspired by Nature juried art show will open at the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington on July 31 with a gala from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and continue through September 6. The exhibit will then move to the Bryan Memorial Art Gallery in Jeffersonville from September 18 until October 31, with an opening reception Sunday, September 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The nature and landscape of Vermont have shaped the charac-ter of the state and its people for centuries. Since 1960, The Nature Conservancy has played a pivotal role in protecting this landscape, conserving more than 185,000 acres of upland forest, lake shore bluffs, expansive wetlands and shady river banks. All species, soaring centu-rion oaks, iconic black bear, diminutive bats and stunning bog orchids, species large and small, common and rare, benefit from the protection of their habitat. Artists are encouraged to use their creativity to capture the essence of these special places.

In addition to conserved lands and well-loved Vermont icons like Camels Hump and the Long Trail, artists in southern Vermont can explore the granite mountain top of Black Mountain in Dummerston, the mature forests of the Equinox Highlands in Manchester and the incredible 360-degree views from the top of North Pawlet Hills in Pawlet. Finally, not to be missed, is the crown jewel in the Conservancy’s preserve network, the Helen W. Buckner Preserve at Bald Mountain in West Rutland County.

Weston Playhouse Holds Auditions for Local Youth

The Weston Playhouse is holding auditions on April 24 for a Vermont youth to participate in its summer Young Company production of “Seussical” by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

“Seussical” is a Broadway musical based on the children’s stories of Dr. Seuss and featuring such beloved characters as the Cat in the Hat, Horton and Mayzie. Weston is performing the 1-hour version for young audiences with its 7-member Young Company of undergraduate musical theatre majors at the Weston Rod and Gun Club and on tour to surrounding communities.

The theatre seeks a boy or girl of any ethnicity, age 9 to 11, to play the role of JoJo. S/he should be open, outgoing, energetic, imaginative and inventive, with a tender, strong voice (range Ab to C). Preference will be given to candidates with previous acting experience and real movement ability.

Auditions with director/choreographer David Marquez and music director Jon Balcourt will be held at the Weston Rod and Gun Club, 982 Route 100, on Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. Auditionees will be asked to sing, read and move. Scholarships Available The Bennington Rotary Club announces the 2010 Bennington

Rotary Club Scholarships. The club is offering a total of seven $1,000 scholarships to graduating students in each of the following categories: technical college or accredited trade school; two-year college; four-year college. The purpose of the scholarship is to help reduce the family’s share of college expenses for its student. It is not intended to reduce any of the intended school’s scholarships, grants, loans or work-study awards to the student.

Any graduating senior from Mount Anthony Union High School, or any educational institution in Bennington, including private or parochial schools is eligible to apply for a scholarship. Home-schooled students are eligible as is any Bennington County resident student even if enrolled in a school outside the county.

Applicants are judged on: Character, measured by the kinds of activi-ties the student has been involved in; the applicant’s in-depth personal narrative; and at least two references; demonstrated school and com-munity service (volunteering); academic record; and financial need.

Sherlock Holmes Mystery Theatre Airs on WBTN

Sherlockian Robert Ebert and friends will be presenting three Sherlock Holmes myster-ies to be aired at different times throughout the summer on WBTN.

The first story to air will be “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of Black Peter.” Solve the mystery with Sherlock Holmes and Doctor

Watson as they encounter long-missing bank notes, a gruesome har-poon killing and a list of tough suspects. The program will air on June 2, 9,16, and August 4. Starring in the play will be: Sherlock Holmes, Marc Simpson; Doctor Watson, Don Miller; Inspector Hopkins, Stephen Perkins; John Neligan, Jeff Bradway; Patrick Cairns, Chuck Putney and Black Peter, Chuck Putney.

Second up is “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Cardboard Box.” The cast is yet to be determined for this story of a 50ish woman receiving a parcel post containing two severed human ears packed in course salt. The program will air on June 23, 30; July 7 and August 11.

The final production of Sherlock Holmes Mystery Theatre will be “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Copper Beeches,” a story about a governess living in a strange household with a 6 year old child who is cruel to animals, a bull mastif that is always kept hungry, and someone kept prisoner in a forbidden wing of the estate. This program will air on July 14, 21, 28 and August 18, with the cast yet to be deter-mined.

‘Finnigans, Slaters and Stonepeggers, A History of the Irish in Vermont’

On Sunday, April 18 at 2:00 p.m. the Bennington Historical Society will present James Feeney who will discuss the history of the Irish in Vermont though his book “Finnigans, Slaters and Stonepeggers, A History of the Irish in Vermont.” This program, held in the Ada Paresky Education Center located on the second floor of the Bennington Museum, is free and open to the public.

Based on extensive research with primary documents, Feeney’s book describes, era by era, why the Irish left Ireland, how they traveled, what attracted them to Vermont, and how they made new lives for them-selves and their descendants throughout the Green Mountain State. The book details the coming of the Irish to Vermont: from the Scots-Irish of Londonderry in the 1770s, through the famine Irish marble workers of West Rutland and slate workers of Castleton and Poultney, to politicians like mayors Burke of Burlington and Corry of Montpelier in the early 20th century.

A short epilogue recounts the success of Irish American Vermonters in our own day, including Senator Patrick Leahy. In his presentation, Feeney discusses the impact the Irish immigrants had on Vermont life during the mid-19th Century, as they arrived just as Vermont was undergoing a mini industrial revolution based on railroad construc-tion, the quarrying of slate and marble and on textile production. He will also touch on the Irish in Bennington and their influence on the town.

Feeney received a BA from San Jose State University, MA from the University of Vermont, and PhD from the University of Washington, all in History. He was Adjunct Professor of History at the University of Vermont 1977-2006. Since 2003 he has been a lecturer for the Vermont Humanities Council. Feeney is also the author of “Vermont: An Illustrated History” with John Duffy and “The Great Falls on Onion River: A History of Winooski, Vermont.”

He is a member of the Vermont Historical Society, Center for Research on Vermont, Chittenden County Historical Society (President 1999-2003), and the Winooski Historical Society. He lives with his wife in Marshfield, Vermont.

Free Family Day April 25 at The ClarkIt’s a campus wide family adventure during the People and Spaces

Family Day at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute on Sunday, April 25, from 12 to 4 p.m. This free day will explore how people fit into different spaces, places, and settings. Try to keep your bearings in a maze, create detailed clothespin people, build a miniature museum, climb a wall, and visit the Giovanni Boldini in Impressionist Paris exhi-bition. Admission and activities are free.

Fairy houses and gnome homes will dot the Clark’s expansive campus waiting to be discovered. The tiny dwellings, made from natural materi-als, will be created by members of the community during the April 17 to 25 school vacation week. Maps of the houses will be handed out at the welcome desk; take a walking tour and visit one or visit them all.

Take a wooden clothespin, add fabric, hair, and Boldini-inspired accessories (including top hats and pearls) to create your very own miniature person. Need a museum for your tiny person to visit? Create one complete with mini clay sculptures you will make and scaled down images of Boldini paintings. Supplies will be provided.

Donald Hall began writing as an adolescent and attended the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference at the age of sixteen – the same year he had his first work published. Hall published numerous books of poetry, including “The One Day,” which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, the

Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and a Pulitzer Prize nomina-tion; “The Happy Man,” which won the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize; and Exiles and Marriages, which was the Academy’s Lamont Poetry Selection in 1956.

Besides poetry, Hall has writ-ten books on baseball, sculptor Henry Moore and poet Marianne Moore. He is the author of short stories, plays and children’s books, including “Ox-Cart Man,” which won the Caldecott Medal. He published several autobiographi-cal works, such as “The Best Day

The Worst Day: Life with Jane Kenyon” (his wife and fellow poet who died from leukemia) and “Life Work,” which won the New England Book Award for nonfic-tion.
