 To the Menlo-Atherton Community

A warm welcome to all new and returning M-A families. By the time you receive this TriVocis, school will have commenced and we will be in the thick of the new year. The wonderful part of every new school year is the opportunity to start with a fresh slate; emphasize this with your child and help him or her chart a path to success.

New initiatives

In an effort to build stronger technology skills, we have developed a two-pronged approach for this year. All ninth graders will have training in library research skills and document creation as well as other key competencies. On a parallel track, staff will be encouraged and supported to use technology to provide a more engaging and interactive learning environment.

Transitions

The first weeks of the year are very busy; ninth graders and transfer students will need time to adjust to the physical campus, to a new bell schedule, and to their teachers and other staff. Parents will also be learning the campus, acclimating to new school procedures and to the relationship between their adolescent child and high school instructors. I suggest that you ask many questions, not be afraid to e-mail or call school staff, and get to know your child’s guidance counselor. Soliciting advice from an experienced M-A parent is also highly useful.

To facilitate communication, sign up for the weekly BearNotes e-mail from the PTA (subscribe via [email protected]), and use the student information system known as Infinite Campus. (If you need a pass code or other Infinite Campus information, contact Lorry Orcutt at (650) 322-5311, ext. 5113, or [email protected].) Keep abreast of school events and key dates through the mabears.org Web site: Click on “M-A Events Calendar” on the left for a complete listing of events.

Updates: Hiring and construction

I had the opportunity to hire a tremendous group of teachers for this year, most coming to M-A with years of successful teaching experience. We bring on board Susan Berghouse and Michael Holtz in English; Nicholas Michels in math; Gina Lucariello, Elizabeth Lee, and Jyothi Sunkara in science; Tiffany Genasci in special needs; and Jon Boone and Candace Bolles in social studies. I’m excited to share our new faculty with the entire community.

Dedication of our new Digital Media Arts Center will take place at 6 pm on Back to School Night (Thursday, September 6). The new structure houses four state-of-the-art technology labs and a general-use classroom, as well as bathroom and kitchen facilities for the turf field. It’s a beautiful two-story structure and a great addition to the physical plant. Other improvements include upgrades to science room C-0 so that it can accommodate our new AP environmental science classes, a better facility for the Independent Living Skills Program, and a replacement of the worn-out synthetic turf on the school’s main athletic field.

Noteworthy • Student support coordinator Miki Cristerna received the Kay Phillips Award from

the Youth Community Service agency for her work with underserved and struggling adolescents at M-A.

• College advisor Alice Kleeman was a featured blog contributor on collegeadmissionbook.com. Her article “Do Sweat the Small Stuff!” outlines the details that make for successful college applications.

• Senior Hanna Berggren won San Jose top honor awards for high school musical theater in the Bay Area. She played Princess Winnifred in last spring’s M-A musical Once upon a Mattress.

• M-A’s Honor Institute, a summer program to prepare underrepresented students for challenging courses, was recently featured in the Almanac. Read the story at almanacnews.com/news/show_story.php?id=11746.

• Incoming ninth grader Ethan Oro has been selected to serve on the advisory board for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation after his project won awards at the California State Science Fair last year.

• The football team spent its annual Community Service Work Day in East Palo Alto performing trash removal, graffiti abatement, and landscaping work throughout the city. Coach Sione Taufoou and former M-A parent and football booster Larry Moody led the effort.

A great year is in the making for the entire Menlo-Atherton community. Matthew Zito, principal

Matthew Zito, director

Tips/Consejos from Principal Matthew Zito

TIPS for students’ smooth transition to M-A

ü Become acquainted with the physical layout of the school campus, including traveling between the PE locker rooms and the main campus classroom wings. (The original part of the campus is laid out in alphabetically organized wings: A, B, C, D, and E.) A campus map is available at www.mabears.org.

ü Determine your transportation route to and from school, including drop-off and pick-up points.

ü Bring a snack and a full lunch to school. Our sched-

ule has placed lunch late in the day, so it’s very important to have a snack during the brunch period. Food-service lines also tend to be long at the beginning of the year.

ü Join a fall sports team, a club, or some type of school activity during the first weeks of school.

ü Know the location of student bathrooms (including the one in the health clerk’s office in the administra-tive wing). Bathrooms are located in Pride Hall, next to classroom E-7, and at the edge of the basketball courts, in addition to those in both locker rooms.

ü Use a hall locker so that you do not have to walk around campus with heavy textbooks.

From the PTA

Welcome new and returning M-A students, families, and staff members to the 2012–13 school year. The year is off to a smooth start with Arena Check-in, schedule distribution, and the first days of school behind us. Many thanks to Mary Zarucchi and Gloria Principe and to the 100+ parent volunteers who helped make the first events of the year a success.

First PTA General Meeting: Tuesday, August 28, 2012, 8:45-10:00 am, PAC cafeteria. Come hear Principal Matthew Zito talk about the new Digital Media building and other construction projects as well answer any questions you may have. Yes, there will be a vote on the budget, too.

The M-A PTA supports students and staff by providing volunteers and/or funding for projects, equipment, and supplies. Funding comes from the membership and the annual Senior Fashion Show, scheduled for Saturday, February 23, 2013. Please consider joining the PTA during our membership drive through the end of September. Your membership not only provides needed funding but also allows you to vote on how the money is allocated. To join online, go to mabearspta.org/DonateOnline.html.

Even if you don’t join the PTA, you can still volunteer for the many projects and events that need volunteer staffing throughout the year. The school administration, faculty, and staff are very appreciative of the projects undertaken by the PTA. Please see the PTA Web page at mabearspta.org for a list of events and for chairpeople to contact. Volunteering is also a great way to be on campus, see how the school runs, work with other amazing volunteers, and even see your child during school!

Please feel free to contact the PTA chairpeople directly or to e-mail us at [email protected] for information. We look forward to meeting and working with you to help our kids, staff, and school. Wishing you a successful new year. Karen Fryling and Brian LaPorte, PTA co-presidents

Did you miss adding M-A High School to your eScrip account

at Arena Check-In?

If you did, IT’S NOT TOO LATE! Since 2000 the M-A PTA has earned $355, 400 for our students through eScrip! We count on you to continue to give us this free money to support your kids. Your typical grocery shopping can provide at least $30 to $40 a year from local stores.

Check out our easy link to update or join eScrip! Go to www.mabears.org and click on the eScrip logo at the bottom right corner of the M-A home page. This will take you to your eScrip home page, where you can see where your money is going. (Sometimes, you may need to sign in to get to your eScrip home page.) Note that Safeway cards must be renewed every year—this year by November 1. Just click “Renew” button.

Need to add M-A to your account? If M-A isn’t listed as a recipient on your account (see the top right corner of your home page), you can add it by going to “My eScrip” and adding M-A’s ID # 136550465. If you aren’t able to retrieve your password or have other challenges with the eScrip Web site, please contact Mary Murphy at [email protected]. If you aren’t able to find your eScrip account, perhaps you need to sign up for eScrip, following the directions at the eScrip site.

Don’t let this free money get away! The PTA needs YOU to help us continue to support our M-A students in their sports, academics, and arts!

Freshman Challenge Day

ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

November 5 and 6, 2012

Challenge Day is coming to M-A for the ninth year, and we need your help! This freshman event, which kicks off our year-long “Be the Change” program, is sponsored by the M-A PTA with support from the principal, teachers, and administrative staff. The incoming freshman class will participate in this lifetime experience. Our goal is that at the end of the day, students not only will have bonded as a class but also will have torn down old stereotypes and become inspired to live, study, and work in an environment of compassion, acceptance, and respect.

Since 1987 the Challenge Day programs have touched the lives of over half a million teens nationwide. In fact, Challenge Day is the subject of the popular TV series If You Really Knew Me and was featured on the Oprah show, in the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul, and in the Emmy-winning documentary Teen Files: Surviving High School.

Challenge Day is a powerful, high-energy program in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning activities. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self-esteem; to shift negative peer pressure to positive peer support; and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence, and all forms of oppression. The Challenge Day programs are designed to unite the members of the school and to empower them to carry the themes of the program back to the greater school population. And it works! In the poignant words of a past parent volunteer and small-group facilitator, “I do believe that each time they see each other, it will remind them that they are not alone in their difficulties. I saw repeatedly throughout the day students realizing they are not the only one with various struggles. Then I saw their peers reaching out to assist.”

Adult participation is crucial to the success of these two days! The freshman class will be divided so that half attend each day, and we are looking for over 150 adult volunteers to help with this event. You can volunteer either Monday, November 5, or Tuesday, November 6. Volunteer positions include small-group facilitators for 4–5 students (8:15 am to 3:30 pm), registration (8:00 to 9:15 am), or lunch servers (11:00 am to 1:00 pm). Everyone is welcome, whether you are a parent of a freshman or of an upperclassman.

As you are making your volunteer plans for the school year, please take the time to consider making a real difference in the lives of our M-A teens in this awesome way. As previous participants, we can promise you that you, too, will walk away a changed individual.

To volunteer for any position, please e-mail us at [email protected], specifying the position and time for which you wish to volunteer. If you are the parent of a freshman, please also provide your student’s first and last name.

From Our Co-Presidents—20 Years and Counting! Welcome to our Foundation Family! This year is an exciting milestone, as it marks twenty years of our support of excellence in education at Menlo-Atherton High School. The efficient connection of donor dollars to the needs of our students has transformed our school and our community. Every year state funding falls short and the Foundation steps in to fully support M-A’s exceptional teaching and curriculum. The Foundation is the only fundraising entity at M-A that funds salaries for key teachers and staff, making every dollar we raise crucial. We provide solutions for our students—and have done so for twenty years and counting.

Last year was economically challenging, but the Foundation raised an astounding $1,600,000, increasing our donor base while also attracting grants from well-known companies. For this school year, we have committed to raise an awesome $1,750,000. Our California Distinguished School is worthy of our commitment to continued excellence, but we can’t do it without you.

With your help, the Foundation will:

Maintain smaller class sizes. We will fund thirty-five additional sections of key academic subjects in 2012–13, and hundreds of students will feel the difference of reduced class size in over 150 English, social studies, math, science, and foreign language classes. Support excellent teaching. We will fund professional development programs, enable departmental collaboration, and provide incentive awards for outstanding teachers and staff. Enrich M-A’s curriculum. We will support important courses such as AP French, AP calculus, and AP environmental science, and key electives such as journalism, digital photography, drama, and choral. Ensure college and career success. We will support two guidance counselors, college counseling services, and SAT prep classes. Fund critical programs and services. We will provide vital funding for a student support coordinator, parent education coordinator, leadership/activities/shadowing advisor, AVID, and more.

We will launch our official 2012–13 fundraising campaign in early October. Watch for information about how you can contribute in TriVocis, BearNotes, and periodic e-mails and at our informational events. Your support at any level is greatly valued and will be spent wisely to benefit every student at M-A. Join us this year—our twentieth anniversary—in supporting excellent public education at Menlo-Atherton High School. Our students are counting on you. Warmly, Lori Cohen and Mark Balestra, 2012–13 Foundation for the Future co-presidents

From the Guidance Office

Welcome back! We extend a special welcome to our ninth grade families.

Class schedule changes

• If a schedule change is necessary, it needs to be done during the first two weeks of school. The student should pick up a “Request to See a Guidance Counselor” form in the Guidance Office and put it in his or her guidance advisor’s box. If your student doesn’t know the ropes, someone in the Guidance Office will help.

• Moving into a class is dependent on the size of the class. After the first two weeks of school, we do not make schedule adjustments except for a possible level change, such as moving from Spanish II to Spanish I.

• The last day to add a class is September 6, 2012. Thereafter, changes will be made only if a student is in the wrong level. • If a student wants to drop a class and not have it show on his or her transcript, it must be done by October 4, 2012. • The last day to withdraw (Withdrawal Pass–WP or Withdrawal Fail–WF) from a first-semester class is November 8, 2012.

However, this withdrawal will show up on the transcript.

Classroom visits

Guidance counselors will meet with students in their classes starting in September to review transcripts and high school and college requirements and to provide general information and tips to help students.

• Twelfth grade: September • Ninth grade: September/October (the first of four scheduled visits) • Tenth grade: October • Selected eleventh grade: November

Senior deadlines for class of 2013

Please be aware that not all courses taken under the Distance Learning program are approved by the University of California system.

Secondary school reports/counselor recommendation for seniors

• Required for private or out of state colleges or universities only. • Students must complete the “Recommendation Request Packet” available on Naviance. Go to www.mabears.org, click on the link

to Naviance, and login. The packet is in the document library on the right side. The packet must include a copy of the college essay, parent statement, peer statement, and an unofficial copy of the student’s transcript.

• Students need to submit their recommendation packets in person to their guidance counselor as early as possible and no later than the following deadlines:

Career Center

My summer meetings with incoming seniors have been interesting and productive. I do my best to answer their many excellent questions, and work with them on remaining calm about the admission process (even enjoying it!) as well as staying positive and realistic about their options.

Parents of seniors: Plan to attend an informal evening about the college search, application, and selection process. There will be plenty of time for your questions! Please come to the PAC Cafeteria at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 20. RSVP to [email protected] so I will know how many people to expect. (Parents of seniors only, please—no students. Students will hear from me at school!) The meeting will be simultaneously translated into Spanish.

Watch the calendar for meetings with sophomore and junior parents this winter.

All parents: If you would like to be on the Career Center parent e-list, please go to www.macareercenter.com and click on the link to join. Students receive e-mail communication from me through Naviance. My e-mail communication with parents is occasional; students hear from me frequently (in the case of seniors, weekly).

Many colleges have already scheduled visits to M-A, including U. of British Columbia, Bryant U., Bucknell, Colgate, U. of Denver, Dickinson, Eugene Lang, Goucher, Hampshire, Haverford, Lehigh, Linfield, Macalester, Northeastern, Occidental, Oregon State, U. of Oregon, U. of Puget Sound, Rensselaer Polytechnic, Rider, Seton Hall, St. Mary’s, U. of San Diego, Sarah Lawrence, Scripps, Skidmore, Swarthmore, U. of St. Andrews (in Scotland), St. Lawrence U., Union, U. of Washington, Western New England U., and Westmont. By December, more than 125 colleges will have visited. Juniors and seniors who wish to attend these visits can learn about them through Naviance, the calendar in the Career Center, a list posted in their English classroom, and www.macareercenter.com. Students must obtain a pass AT LEAST ONE DAY IN ADVANCE to request permission to leave class for these presentations.

On several days in fall I will be away from M-A. Fall conferences provide essential updates on the UCs, CSUs, community colleges, college testing, and financial aid. I will report new developments to the seniors (through their English classes, Naviance, and our Facebook group). I will also attend the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) conference in Denver October 4–7. While such absences are absolutely necessary for me to do a good job, I regret my unavailability. Students can always reach me by e-mail when I am away.

All seniors will receive a Senior Bulletin and a Financial Aid Calendar from me the first week of school; all juniors will receive a Junior Bulletin. Bulletins are intended to keep students on track with applications, testing, financial aid, scholarships, etc.

For many years at this time, I have written in TriVocis about my conviction that the ongoing frenzy over college admission is not healthy for students or families. Each year, I renew my commitment to encouraging students to keep open minds about college options. Let’s all ask ourselves whether our own actions are contributing to the frenzy; if the answer is yes, let’s step back and adjust our priorities. We must encourage students to pursue their interests and passions without undue stress or exaggerated emphasis on attending highly selective colleges. We can all contribute to deflating the upward spiral of unhealthy competition. And with constantly changing predictions about the impacts of budget cuts and college costs spiraling as well, we need to keep cool heads and keep options open.

Feel free to contact me with questions at any time at [email protected].

M-A’s Own PSAT/SAT Prep On September 17, M-A’s Own PSAT/SAT Prep will open its thirty-first year of getting M-A students ready for the first step in the all-important, and sometimes grueling, junior year. One way to remove some of the “gruel” is to enroll your student in our class to examine, practice, and learn how to take the PSAT. There are a few spaces remaining for the fall course. Juniors are given preference, along with those few seniors who, for various reasons, have not yet taken the SAT and now wish to do so.

Sophomores do not need to take the PSAT, so they are waitlisted and admitted if space permits in order of enrollment. Our fee ranges from $100 to $225, depending on the number enrolled, and it includes all necessary materials. In the fall the fee is usually at or very near the bottom of the range. Once the student is seated in the classroom on the first day, the parent becomes responsible for the fee.

We meet in room B10, courtesy of Mr. Florio, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm on Mondays and Tuesdays for five weeks, ending the week the PSAT is given. In the event of a conflict with the school calendar, the students vote, majority rule, on an alternate date from a set of dates the teacher makes available. Since we’ve been at this for so many years, our mantra has become "As good as the best and better than all the rest." We know we can succeed with any student who is interested in achievement and willing to do the very small amount of homework we ask each week. The prepared students who do their homework faithfully spark the class.

To ask questions and/or to enroll your student, call/write me at [email protected] (preferred) or call (650) 323-4066. Information cheerfully dispensed.

Jane King, director

English Language Development (ELD)

Tutors Needed! Do you have two hours a week to help tutor students who are trying to learn English? The ELD program has students from many different countries and it varies from year to year, but the majority of the students speak Spanish as their native language. M-A’s Hispanic Outreach Initiative program received the very prestigious Apple Award last year for its achievements in engaging Hispanic parents and families in their children’s education. Because of this great success, the program will be emulated by schools across the state!

You do not need foreign language experience. The ELD teacher will give you a plan for each class meeting. You will work with a maximum of two students, with the goal of helping them improve in spoken and written English. Over the course of a semester, you will get to know them and see their progress.

Volunteers are needed for ELD classes at these times:

Wednesday, third period, 11:15 am to 12:55 pm Thursday, second period, 9:40 to 11:20 am

A startup and orientatiom meeting will be scheduled for mid-September.

If you are interested, please e-mail [email protected].

Visual and Performing Arts

The staff is excited for another positive year of expression and growth in your students.

There will be many opportunities throughout the year to experience the many talents on campus. Look for information on concerts, plays, and displays throughout the year.

Thank you for your continued support.

M-A Math Contests

The Math Department is quite proud of our students’ contest accomplishments, and we are looking forward to another great year. Top performers who are returning this year include Cleo Tyler, Alex Freeman, Maya Israni, and Anton Paquin. School-wide math contests are held during lunch on seven Tuesdays throughout the year. These contests are part of a state contest called the California Math League. Hundreds of high schools throughout the state participate, at both a state and a county level. Participating students receive many benefits. Most obviously, they receive extra credit in their math classes. They also enjoy the challenge of competition and the

chance to compete with their peers. And each year approximately twenty winners receive trophies and can add the award to their college applications. Beyond the extra credit, the spirit of competition, and the awards, there is a very practical benefit that students engage in independent thinking that cuts across the math curriculum. We believe that students who participate in many math contests during high school become moreskilled at taking standardized tests, in particular SATs, math subject tests, and AP math exams.

This year’s contests will occur on September 25, October 16, November 13, December 11, January 8, February 12, and March 12. Please encourage your son or daughter to participate! Approximately five hundred students do so each year. Each contest lasts thirty minutes and requires solving six challenging math problems by applying high-school-level concepts from geometry through precalculus. A student can score from 0 to 6 on each contest. Most participants are in geometry 9, AS algebra II, precalculus, AP calculus, and AP statistics, though certainly algebra students are welcome. The typical score on a contest can be a 1 or 2, and students often score 0 because of the difficulty of the questions. Some good math students do not perform well in these competitions, in which case we understand that they may decide not to continue participating.

Note: An additional math contest, the American Math Contest, will be held February 5, 2013, during fifth and sixth periods. This international contest is by invitation only, with participants selected based on their California Math League performance and math abilities shown in class. Top performers—typically five to ten M-A students—go on the three-hour American Invitation Math Exam. Gregg Whitnah, Math Department chair

A Mural for Belle Haven Belle Haven School has a colorful new mural created by M-A senior Jeremy Chow and sponsored by the Ravenswood Education Foundation. Jeremy designed the mural as part of his Eagle project and was joined in painting it by family, friends, M-A students, and scouts from Troop 109. With the theme of “College Bound,” the mural encourages students to attain leadership qualities.

Leadership

Welcome back, M-A! We hope everyone had a fun and relaxing summer vacation. The leadership class is excited to begin a year of spirit and service. We have many activities planned for the 2012–13 school year. We kicked off the year with our Back to School dance on Friday, August 24. We have already started to plan Club Training and Club Rush, which will be on September 13 and September 28, respectively. At Club Rush, students can visit booths set up by all of the clubs at M-A and find one or more they want to participate in. We are starting to plan our Homecoming activities for the week of October 8, including a rally on Monday, October 8, a week of noontime activities and dress-up days, our football halftime, and the exciting finish of the Homecoming Dance on October 13 at the Fox Theater in downtown Redwood City. We are also looking forward to Trick-or-Treat Street on Thursday, October 25, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. At this an annual event, younger children come to the M-A campus to go trick-or-treating. Join our Fall Blood Drive during the school day on October 26 so that we can beat last year's total! So far this year we have our hands full, and these are only a couple of activities we are planning. We are excited for a new school year!

Justine Ferry, Associated Student Body president

Class of 2013

The senior committee, to be led this year by President Dana Thomas and Co-Vice Presidents Noa Barak and Ross Dairiki, is looking forward to a final year full of class unity, school spirit, and celebration. With less than a year until graduation, the class of 2013 has many "lasts" to look forward to: the first AND last Senior Fashion Show, Homecoming, Prom, Senior Week, and, of course, Graduation! Let’s start the year off well, Bears!

Dana Thomas, senior class president

Student Store open for business

The back-to-school Grand Opening of our Student Store will take place on Monday, September 10, but we will be open for Back to School Night on Thursday, September 6. Located on the side of room B21 facing the PAC, the store is open every day at lunch, with a great team of student leaders to help customers. We accept cash or checks (made out to M-A Student Store) for healthy snacks and drinks that meet state nutritional requirements as well as a super variety of Bear Wear and spirit items for the M-A community. Need goggles for chemistry class? We offer those as well as other school supplies. For information, please contact the ASB treasurer/Student Store manager, Wesley Arrington, or Kelly Todd at [email protected].

Show Bear Pride

Buying Bear Wear has never been easier or more convenient! It’s in stock at the Student Store, where new designs are among the latest shipment. Or you can shop online, with 10% of the proceeds coming directly back to M-A. Reach our online store in two ways:

• The easiest way is to log onto www.mabears.org and pull down the “Students” menu to find “Bear Wear Online.” That will lead you to the M-A area at Prep Sportswear.

• You may also log directly into the Prep Sportswear Web site at www.prepsportswear.com. At the home page, enter Menlo-Atherton High School and you’ll be taken to our area.

The only thing left to do is start shopping! Not only can you purchase gear in support of our numerous sports, clubs, and classes, but you can also specify boys or girls and even Mom or Dad. The choices meet a wide variety of tastes for our supporters. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Todd at [email protected].

Bear Pride Fridays

We are looking forward the 2012–13 school year being the most spirited year in the history of Menlo-Atherton High School. Our goal is for every Friday to be Bear Pride Friday. We hope to look down Pride Hall and Hello Hall or across the G-wing, the Green, or the girls’ soccer field at lunch and see an ocean of maroon and gold.

Every Friday, students should show off their Bear Wear, their favorite athletic team shirt, or their favorite M-A gear. Any appropriate maroon and/or gold shirt will show Bear spirit. Staff members: join in by wearing your staff shirts. Make it a Bear Pride Friday!

Welcome, class of 2016 and new Bear families!

We are excited to have you as part of the Menlo-Atherton family and we are planning opportunities for the class of 2016 to become actively involved in the Bear community.

We were thrilled to meet our newest Bears at Freshman Orientation on Monday, August 20. It allowed us to introduce them to our spirited leadership students and our supportive Freshman Transition leaders, whom they will get to know really well this year.

The Class of 2016 will have lots of chances to get involved on campus. The first two weeks will be filled with activities each day at lunch. The venues will be announced during the daily Bear News announcements, heard over the intercom at the start of SS&R (silent studying and reading). On Friday, September 28, we will be hosting our fall Club Rush, which allows students to find out about M-A’s wide variety of clubs and to meet some of the members.
