From the President John Neverdahl

With the amount of precipitation we have had this month in the Denver vicinity, perhaps our Butikken should start selling umbrellas and small rubber rafts!!

What an outstanding Syttende Mai event we had on May 17th! Under the direction of Beverly King, this premier event is one that sets the standard for how to celebrate such an important and historical event. Mange Takk to Bev and her great support team of Trollheim members. Many hours of planning, food preparation and serving, and the artistic collaboration of Barb Hessel creating table decorations; everything was 1st class! All the combined efforts were very much appreciated. Delicious food, approximately 200 friends whose company was enjoyed, and the pleasure of live music made for a memorable day. I heard nothing but compliments and accolades for the food, atmosphere, and friendliness of all involved. Many guests really appreciated the opportunity to shop in the Butikken also.

Charles Knutson, our language instructor and the Trollheim Choir

Director performed several songs in Norwegian for our entertainment, along with the national anthems. Thank you, “sir” Charles. Next, an a cappella quartet called “The Harmony Works” who are part of the larger group, “The High Country Chorus,” serenaded us in perfect harmony!

Our monthly meeting on the 18th was an eye opener. Cary Johnson with the First Judicial District Attorney’s office gave us a presentation on how to prevent fraud. His statistics alone made all of us think about documents we should always leave at home and the select few to carry with us! Want more information? Ask any of the members that attended this important meeting. Cary stated that he will return and lecture on other security issues at my request. Be well. Fraternally, John

June General Meeting Monday, June 15, 2015; 7 pm

Ice Cream Social

Come get your summer started at the next general meeting! We will have our annual Ice Cream Social with plenty time for SOCIALIZING!

Visit with old friends, meet new friends, and have a well deserved treat to celebrate summer! Bring a card or board game; you might find a few players to share a round or two. Get your favorite ice cream and toppings ready to share! Syrups, candies, nuts, marshmallows, fruit, or whatever sounds good. The lodge will supply the ice cream.

Remember, there will be no general meeting in July. We will meet again on August 17th.

Editor Goofs Again!

Uff da! It isn’t the first time

and probably won’t be the last time!

I got confused last month and inadvertently reported that our speaker would be Cary Stevens at the May General meeting. The correct name is Cary Johnson. And no, he is not Norwegian, but he’s close- he’s a Swede. That’s probably why he was so much fun while speaking to a house of Norwegians at the meeting!

I do apologize for the mistake. — Editor.

Sunshine Corner

Charles William Huff, II Charles William Huff, father of Thomas Huff, treasurer of Trollheim Lodge, passed away on April 20, 2015 in Kalispell, MT. He was born February 21, 1926 in Jackson Hole, WY. He is survived by two daughters, two sons, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. We are sorry for your loss,Tom. May faith and love give you all the strength you need.

Thomas E. Quinn

Born May 8, 1947, Tom entered Eternal Life on May 5, 2015. A native of Colorado, he was kind-hearted and loved people. Tom was the instructor in how to brew tea to perfection for the first tea held at Trollheim. Everything he did was done to perfection. In 2003, he and his lifelong partner, Sissel traveled to Norway with the Trollheim Tour Group. We all enjoyed his sense of humor, and he became a friend to each and every one of us. Tom was the stage manager for all events at Fjellheim Lodge in Colorado Springs; Tom lost his battle to cancer but never complained. He is now without pain. All is well. We shall miss you Tom.

Donna and Jim Robinson just returned from a tour of France and Spain with Friendship Force. They had a wonderful vacation.

Lois and Duke Doeksen, returned from a Viking River Cruise to Paris

and the Heart of Normandy. Lois said the weather was a bit “chilly”.

Sons of Norway Annuities

At Sons of Norway, we like fixed annuities. Why?

For members looking to reduce uncertainty in their financial futures, fixed annuities are a great solution.

Because fixed annuities offer guaranteed safety of principal and a guaranteed minimum interest rate, they provide protection against market down-turns.

With fixed annuities, members can create guaranteed lifetime income.

Owners of our fixed annuities are more certain and confident that they will have a secure retirement.

If you would like to start building a safe foundation for your retirement through fixed annuities, please contact me at [email protected] or 720 971-0130. Mike Johaneson

Boxtops for Education and Labels for Education

The 2015-16 School programs are underway for the education coupons. Please don’t stop cutting out these coupons. It’s an easy way to help Trollheim contribute to our schools. You can hand them over yourself to the school of your choice. Please indicate that these are donated on behalf of the SON Trollheim Lodge.

You can call me at 303-420-8888 or email me at [email protected] to let me know how many coupons you gave on Trollheim’s behalf. I will start collecting them again beginning early 2016. Tusen Takk! Elaine Homan

May General Meeting Report May 18, 2015

Cary Johnson, Jeffco Fraud Unit

First things first; we had a few members who braved the wet weather and walked the parade route around the usual few blocks with Norwegian flags before the meeting,. Thank you to the participants who showed our neighbors our pride in this Syttende Mai holiday.

We had a great potluck offered to us by all who brought food from home and the leftover goods from the Smorgasbord the day before. It was a feast!

Our Financial Secretary and Zone Director, Bev Moe brought a guest, Kristen Tomassen Agersborg, a young woman from the Tromso, NOR region who is visiting Denver for treatment for a ski injury. We wish her well.

Our speaker for the evening, Cary Johnson from

the Jeffco Attorney General’s office gave a presentation that made us all more aware of the crime most prevalent in Colorado, the reasons for the crime, who are committing the offenses, and the steps we can all do to help prevent this, And he gave all who were present, a simple wallet to keep only the bare minimum articles with us, with instructions to KEEP THE WALLET IN A FRONT POCKET. He suggests that 1 major credit card, 1 check (not the whole checkbook), and your driver’s license./ID card are all you need.

Mr Johnson also used our guest, Kristen Agersborg as “show and tell”, encouraging her to show us her “smart card” which all of Europe now uses and has proven to be very secure for several years. Businesses in the US plan to switch from our current “scan strip” cards to smart cards later this year, we were told. Q & A wrapped up the evening.

It was a very worthwhile presentation and we wish more of you could have been present. Mr. Johnson may return in the fall with another topic. Many of us are looking forward to it. Hope you can make the next one. Cary Johnson

Sessions will include special guest instructors in Norwegian Language and music lessons, folk dance, crafts, storytellers, rosemaling, classes in open face sandwiches, waffle making and the famous "Lefse Academy". A light traditional Norwegian lunch is included each day as part of the Cultural Skills Program. A Few Newsletter Changes!

After speaking with the Board on Monday, May 4, 2015, it was decided that the Newsletter could forgo the large calendar since there are so few events listed, and most of it is on the weekend. This makes the calendar difficult to design, and frustrating to devote 1 whole page to this space-wasting calendar. As of this issue, the calendar is gone, until further notice. Events and meeting dates will be on the front page. Watch for it!

Also, the birth day (number) has been added to the birthday lists, by popular demand. At one point several years ago, it was considered unnecessary, but many people have asked for this addition.

I hope you like the changes. There will be more while I take a hiatus for June and plan for the next year. Please call or email if you have any other ideas! Elaine Homan, Editor, Trollheim News 303-420-8888 or [email protected]

Smorgasbord 2015 “We Did It Again”

By Bev King All Comment’s Were Positive.

“This is the best one ever!” and “You did it again!” were some of the comments made. One hundred seventy one guests enjoyed their day at Trollheim. Of the one hundred seventy one attending, sixty-seven were members of Trollheim, ninety-two were from our community and twelve were children.

Upon entering the dining room one was taken back by ninety-four flickering battery-operated candles placed in wine glasses topped with lamp shades of red white and blue. The lampshades matched the

placemats that overlayed the larger red mats. There were four lamps at each table. Many thanks goes out to the lady that takes your reservation, Barb Hessel, who, with a degree in the upmost imagination of décor, created these candle/lampshades with good taste and a bit of flare. When the lights were dimmed it was a sea of flickering candles. Thank you, Ms. Hessel, for making the room absolutely elegant. Thanks goes to the Dameklub, Trollheim’s ladies group, for setting the tables in good taste. You are appreciated.

To make the smorgasbord possible, it took hours of preparation and Norwegian backbone. Cooking and baking is more than a hobby; it is an art, as it properly should be.

We wish to thank the following for the preparation of deviled eggs: Mechelle Mattson, Coleen Rose, Dale & Sarah Hughes, Barbara Hessel, and Carolyn & Ken Perley. Thank you to Barb Bessesen for her tasty Lemon Bread. Thank you to Connie Bartram for her Norwegian heart shaped waffles served with sour cream and lingonberries. The servers at the buffet table were: Harlan Hagen, Mechelle Mattson, Dale and Sarah Hughes, Linda Ault, Ione Norby, Sonja Engebretson, Jim and Thora Aarvig, (who served five gallons of Rømmegrøt!) and Carol Zablocki in charge of the desserts.

7

Kitchen help were: Larry Stennes, Harlan Hagen, Bob King, Ione Norby, , Ruth Peterson, Andree Vetter, Donna Robinson, Carol Zablocki, Linda Ault, Jit Gurung, Sonja Engebretson, James and Jackie Bland, and Perry Monkelien. Bev Moe also worked in the kitchen and brought her guest, Kristen Tomassen Agersborg from the area around Tromso, Norway, who also helped. (We had a real Norwegian to help with the Smorgasbord!)

Thank you to the guests that make this possible every year. Let us not forget Charles Knutson and the Trollheim Choir. Charles read in English, “Syttende Mai”, a poem by Nordahl Grieg, on the meaning of the 17th of May and Kevin Mebust followed, reading the version in Norwegian. This piece, is beautiful in the Norwegian language, whether you fully understand or not, and Kevin did a great job! “Lena” Jackie Groe kept us in stitches with her Ole and Lena jokes. Thank you to the High Country Harmony Works Quartet, who sang oldies but goodies. And finally, to our loyal usher, Sid Haugum, we thank you for making sure everyone found their assigned seating.

SON Storfjell Lodge

Of Grand County, Colorado

Eighth Annual Rosemaling Seminar

Where Fraser and Tabernash Colorado When: August 21,22 and 23*, Friday, Saturday and Sunday Who: Toshiko Ogishi, Vesterheim Gold Medalist What: Special Instruction in Telemark composition and design RSVP: Required To register or for more information contact Diane Molter at [email protected] or Karen Sommerfeld [email protected]. We are close to full, so with enough interest we may schedule a second session. This seminar is filling fast.

Foundation Scholarships Member Jit Gurung has keeping himself busy with Trollheim events since he became a member as well as before, being a member of the language class and choir before he joined. We are proud to have this young man in our lodge. Recently, Jit received one of the two scholarships offered by SON Trollheim Foundation, and plans to take a course this summer. Our other scholarship recipient is Alisha Robinson. We have no recent picture to share as

she is already at her college of choice. Hopefully, when she visits again, we can get a picture! We wish both Jit and Alisha the best in all their scholarly endeavors!

August Member Appreciation BBQ Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 4:30 pm Mark your calendars for the Annual BBQ dinner at Trollheim, to honor our members for the volunteer hours they contribute. Details of the dinner will be in the August newsletter, which the editor promises will be out in time for everyone to make their RSVP’s. Watch for the next newsletter!

Let’s Try Visiting! Member Spotlight to be launched in August!

Starting in August, Trollheim News will be doing a “Member Spotlight” article on one or two members of Trollheim Lodge. We really don’t visit people anymore, and we don’t know the accomplishments of so many people who have been with us for 20-40 years. We should touch bases with these people once again since many can no longer get out to our meetings and events. Others have commitments that conflict with our times, so they volunteer for the lodge in ways that aren’t always visible. .Everyone is a vital member and should be recognized.

If you should know someone you would like to see in the spotlight, please let the editor know, at 303-420-8888, or [email protected].

Meanwhile, why don’t you personally do the same? Once a month, open your Trollheim Directory, pick a member at random, and give them a call. Who knows? You may find another friend. Let’s get to know each other, again!

SON District Six Convention Loveland, Colorado June 19-22, 2016 Mining our Heritage

Update

The committee for the Convention 2016 is busy with those tasks that are almost accomplished (or will soon be so) and making plans to launch the next phase of work and volunteering.

Cookies by the 100’s of dozens will be needed and all seven (7) lodges in Colorado are responsible for baking several dozen! If this is an area in which you would like to contribute, please let us know (contact info at the end of this article.)

Volunteers will be needed for all 4 days of the convention to lend a hand at the registration and front desk, manning the Cultural Arts room and set-up behind the scenes. The Embassy Suites is just a 50-minute drive from the northern metro Denver area by I-25, which makes it ideal for anyone in the Denver/Loveland area to volunteer a morning, an afternoon or evening. Contact us!

Vendors will soon be invited to register for space at the convention. We hope to have an assortment of goods relating to Scandinavian interests, but other products may be considered if space allows. If you or anyone you know would be interested in this opportunity, please contact us!

Cultural Arts Submissions is another area in

which all members are invited to participate. If you have any embroidery, knitting, rosemaling, wood carving, or anything you made with a Scandanavian theme, we would like to exhibit it. Contact us!

The last District Six Convention in Colorado was over 10 years ago! Let’s all show off our glorious Colorado to the rest of the district in 2016!

The New SON Website is ONLINE Now! www.sofn.com/

If you are like me, you may have an old link to the website and it doesn’t work! The new website is still www.sofn.com but it certainly looks different! Type in the webpage and take a look. Good news-I still could find everything with some trial and error. You will be able to do it, too! Lots of stuff; discounts on travel; online course for Norwegian language, and so much more!

Wouldn’t this look great for your 4th of July picnic?

Sugar Cookie Dessert Pizza adapted from allrecipes.com, yields 10-12 servings

From the SON Newsletter Service

COOKIE: • ½ cup butter, softened • ½ cup sugar • 1 large egg • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 tsp cream of tartar • ½ tsp baking powder • ¼ tsp salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cream together butter and ½ cup sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Add egg and mix. In a separate bowl combine flour, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt and add to creamed mixture until well blended. Press the cookie dough into an ungreased pizza pan*. Bake the “cookie” for roughly 8 to10 minutes or until lightly browned. *Double crust to make a 9"x13" dessert pizza.

TOPPING • 1 package of cream cheese • 8 oz whipped topping, thawed • 2 tsps vanilla extract • ¼ cup confectioners' sugar • assortment of favorite fruits

While the crust cools, beat cream cheese, whipped topping and ¼ cup confectioners' sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Spread on cooled cookie crust. Cut crust into desired serving portions. Add fresh fruit to the top of the crust, making sure excess liquid is removed from fruit beforehand. Chill until ready to serve.

Tips:

Arrange your favorite red and blue berries on top of the pizza to make a festive flag design for Syttende Mai or an

Independence Day Flag!!

Pressed for time? Instead of making the cookie crust from scratch, substitute prepackaged sugar cookie dough.

This editor is taking a vacation for the month of June, and traveling to Minot, ND. I’ll be visiting with my brother and some cousins and do some genealogy research. We are planning a family reunion for next summer, so we will be busy this coming year. I will return before July and have time to get the August newsletter out before Aug 1st. In the meantime, I hope you all have a wonderful start for the summer! Take care and be safe!...Elaine Elaine Homan, Editor

From John Neverdahl:

I think it's time to start building a Viking long boat with amateurs...remember the Ark was built by amateurs, and the TITANIC was built by professional engineers ! By unknown author

With the weather we have had recently, he may have a point!
