From the Presiden tApril is upon us, and our Annual Meeting celebration is just around the corner! Although many are beginning transitions into new roles, we still have much to do. May 31st, the official last day of the League year, will be here before we know it!

What an exciting month the Fundraising Council has had! The “Evening at the Oasis” Preview Party was a wonderful opportunity to meet, mingle, and shop early … all while enjoying the eats and drinks! The “Sunrise Soiree” Breakfast and Fashion Show was absolutely fabulous! I’d like to recognize our Spring Market Co-Chairmen and sister team, Natili Monsrud and Rachel Lankford, along with the entire Spring Market Committee, for turning a vision into an amazing two day Moroccan event! I’d also like to thank Holly Pelletier, Fundraising VP, for her tireless efforts helping us achieve our goal. Special thanks to our very own fashionista, Sarah Sullivan, who fearlessly stepped up to coordinate a phenomenal fashion show. Thank you to our dearest Liz Rogers, who shared her amazing MC skills with us. The event could not have been successful without their teamwork to ensure that the “Evening at the Oasis” Preview Party, the “Sunrise Soiree” Breakfast / Fashion Show, and the Market went off without a hitch.

CAF/Scholarship and Adopt-A-School have distributed grant applications to several 501c(3) organizations in need, scholarship applications to Galveston County high schools, and Adopt-A-School applications to Galveston County Elementary Schools. We are looking forward to presenting these awards soon and would love to see you all at the Scholarship Tea to show your support.

Kudos to Sheyanne Chan and the Kids in the Kitchen Committee for partnering with Williams-Sonoma at Baybrook Mall for their big event on May 4th. The day begins with a Kids’ Fun Walk at 9am and continues with KITK presentations at 11am, 1pm, and 3pm. Our Cookbook gals have also been invited to participate. Look for volunteer opportunities to come on the website.

Jennifer Caffey continues to represent the Junior League of Galveston County by serving on AJLI’s Combating Childhood Obesity Advisory Group. She recently participated in a conference call with AJLI representatives and members from Leagues in the US, Canada, and Mexico. By teleconference, Jennifer took part in a question and answer panel discussion about ways to improve Kids in the Kitchen and increase community partnerships, membership support, and community support of the KITK program. I’m sure she will be bringing lots of great information and ideas back to our League.

Have a great week, and remember to take some time to enjoy all the pleasures of Spring. I’ll see you at the April meeting!

With the weather warming, there is no better way to get out and have some fun than going on a picnic. Whether a long planned event in celebration or a last minute decision to drive thru Chick-Fil-A and head to the park, picnics are always a nice way to spend an afternoon outside. Beachside to Boardwalk has several great recipes that are easy to make and take where ever your adventure may lead you. If you need to simplify, buy a bucket of chicken on the way!

THE PERFECT PICNICTexas Caviar (p.51) with tortilla chipsSouthern Garlic Fried Chicken (p.85)Potato and Corn Summer Salad (p. 66)

Or Momo’s Potato Salad (p. 67)Assortment of fresh veggies and fruits of your choice

Cream Cheese Bars (p. 185)

And I’ll end with a few quick tips…To make it easy to get at the items you need when you arrive at your picnic site,

pack your basket in reverse order. Place nonperishable food on the bottom, then serving items and tableware, and finally the tablecloth on top.

If you’re feeding a lot of people, bring two coolers. Since frequent opening of a cooler allows the cool air to escape, use one for frequently used items such as

beverages. Use the second cooler for perishable foods like meats and salads.

Bring along plastic bags to cart home dirty dishes and silverware, and for garbage in case there are no trash barrels at the picnic site.

For easy clean up, be sure to bring things like paper towels and wipes.

If you have time to play, don’t forget to bring things like balls, kites, and games for after lunch fun!

Sprin g Fundraiser - Fun RunThe Fundraising Council has been actively researching and investigating possible new fundraisers for the future. The following proposal was approved at the February Board Meeting and presented to General Membership at the February General Meeting. All Active members will vote on this new

5K Fun Run proposal at the March General Meeting. Please review the proposal and contact Holly Pelletier with any questions at [email protected] or 832-865-3379.Spring Fundraiser - 5K Fun Run

Spring Fundraiser Fundraising Chair

8 Committee Members

35 JLGC volunteers – day of event

350 Community participants

What: Host a 5K Fun Run and 1K Kid Dash

Mini Festival set up after with games for kids, snacks, booths showcasing our community projects

When: Possible dates February 15, 2014; March 29, 2014; March 22, 2014

How Much: $20 pre-registration via website

$25 day off registration

$10 Kid Dash

Where: Northern portion of the County – Walter Hall Park; Sportsplex on Hwy 96, Kemah

Why: With more than 75% of the county’s population concentrated in this area, we feel it is necessary to reach out to this region. This area is a perfect demographic for this fundraiser. Hosting this event in this area, we not only profit financially from the race participants, but local business will join in sponsoring the Run. Adding on the mini festival following the event should help us gain much needed exposure for our organization and community projects. In large part, JLGC is not recognized by citizens or businesses in this region of the county. A Fun Run 5K will also serve the people of the county and improve our community. Runners and families alike can enjoy a day of health, fitness, and community.

Future Expansion Possibilities:

- Enlarge the event following the race to an all day event by selling vendor spaces, selling food & drinks, and having live entertainment.

- Certifying the course and lengthening the race to a 10K or Half Marathon to attract more serious runners and tap into the runner subculture.
