Metropolitan Expressawarded Iplex contract

After winning a transport tender for Iplex Pipelines, Metropolitan Express Construction Division recently ordered 12 new Isuzus from Patterson Cheney Isuzu, comprising 3 Giga and 9 F Series models.

The new contract is particularly satisfying for Sam Pantou, Director of Metropolitan Express, as the company was not initially invited to participate in the Tender process. Sam managed to convince Iplex Regional Distribution Manager for Vic/Tas, Robert Johns, to give them a few extra days to submit their proposal. Sam’s persistence eventually paid off, as within a few weeks, the company was invited to present a formal presentation of their proposal, and the rest is history.

Under the terms of the contract, Metro Express supply and maintain the trucks and supply fully trained and experienced drivers.

Sam Pantou, believes that they were successful with the tender due to their proven experience and success in this field and their ongoing commitment to safety and innovation.

“We believe innovation is very important in this industry. An example of this is the custom built crane that fits on the back

of all these trucks, allowing for greater versatility and increased efficiencies.

“Each Hiab crane is completely remote controlled, which ties in with our strong stance on safety - throughout our entire fleet, anything we have fitted to the trucks will be remote controlled.

“Not only does the crane have a longer reach and large carrying capacity but further efficiencies are gained through the additional 4.2 metre extension, enabling reduced fuel costs by maximising deliveries.”

In operation since 1986, the privately-owned company was founded by Tony Van Keulen, who was later joined by equal business partner, Sam Pantou; together they have taken on the multinationals to become a strong force in the metropolitan transport world.

Mr Pantou says the latest New Gen Isuzu trucks

stringent ADR80/03 exhaust emissions compliance was an important factor in the purchase process. It also goes a long way in demonstrating Metropolitan Express’ commitment to the environment.

“We are extremely mindful of what our customers are saying and the environmental issue is definitely a big concern. The new Isuzu models are very advanced in this respect; they actually comply with emissions regulations that don’t come into force until 2011,” he said.

Supporting the business’ growing needs is Patterson Cheney Isuzu, who has been supplying Metropolitan Express

with its transport requirements since the early 1990s.

“We have a very strong partnership with Patterson Cheney that has been going on for several years now,” Mr Pantou said.

“Paul Leggerini and the team at Dandenong have been very supportive over the years, and we were very impressed with their recent co-ordination and assistance in the arrangements for delivery of all 11 trucks to Iplex over a very tight timeframe.

“We’ve always had great service from Patterson Cheney and when combined with the great resale value that our Isuzus

achieve, it was an easy decision to

go with Isuzus again.”

Being involved with time sensitive freight such as food and beverages, means that truck reliability is everything to Melbourne based MacGregor Logistics. Which is why they’ve been operating Isuzus since 1998 and have recently taken delivery of two new FVL 1400, 14 pallet curtainsiders.

“They beat everything on the market, hands down,” is how Managing Director Christina MacGregor sums up her feelings about Isuzus. “They just go on and on, downtime is zilch and the reliability is incredible, which is why we’ve stuck with Isuzu,” Chris adds.

The Isuzu’s operate in the Melbourne metropolitan area carting palletised goods and as Chris puts it, ‘they’re worked hard.’ The driver’s comments are

very positive too, with the latest models being referred too as very comfortable and as easy to drive as a car!

Chris has been at the helm of family owned MacGregor Logistics since 1989. Her husband Bill had founded the company in 1972, but after he was taken seriously ill, Chris had to step in and quickly get herself up to speed with the intricacies of running a complex transport operation.

Testament to her determination to succeed can be found in the expansion and growth the company has enjoyed in the ensuing years.

MacGregor Logistics has cemented a reputation for efficiency, reliability and quality of service and has recently achieved its ISO 9001 Quality Managed Systems accreditation.

It is still very much a family affair, with Chris’s son, Martin MacGregor Featherstone in the role of General Manager, at the very youthful age of just twenty nine.

Whilst Chris talks in glowing terms about her Isuzu’s, she leaves the highest praise to the standard of service she receives from Westar, and in particular sales consultant, Steve Marton.

Chris readily admits she knows little about trucks and therefore relies on the advice and expertise of the sales person. “I needed someone who really knew about trucks and would recommend the best solution to our transport needs,” Chris said.

“Steve Marton was brilliant, a real dream to work with. Nothing was too much trouble and he guided me every step of the way. It made the purchase process an

absolute pleasure,” Chris went onto say.

Chris takes advantage of Westar’s servicing expertise and the close proximity of the dealership to their head office is an added bonus.

“My personal philosophy is that to succeed in business you’ve got to have good business partners. And in Isuzu and Westar, that’s exactly what I have,” Chris added.

One of the real success stories for MAN over the last 10 years has been in the specilised fertiliser spreader market.

The 18 tonne MAN 4 x 4 has set the benchmark by which all other all-wheel drive trucks are judged.

Introduced in the late 90’s, the L2000 MAN 18t 4x4 stood out because of the combination of high gross weight rating and low tare weight. This created a payload capability some 30-50% higher than what was possible previously. This was matched by a much more powerful engine and far greater gross combination weight ratings. The MAN also offered much greater ground clearance, better brakes, greater fuel efficiency, increased comfort and lower servicing requirements.

After just a few years in use, it cemented a reputation for being able to stand up to the typically harsh operating conditions it found itself in and quickly became the unit of choice for many operators involved with fertiliser spreading.

At the start of 2008 MAN replaced the L2000 with the TGM range. Essentially the new TGM retained everything that had earned its predecessor such a good reputation, such as the chassis, axles and engine, whilst adding a whole raft of new technology; Automated-Shift with 12 gears, live-drive PTO, Electronic Brake System (EBS), new

heavy duty parabolic springs, and a completely new fully galvanised cab with the latest safety and ergonomic features.

The current Euro 4 EGR engine features the latest common-rail fuel injection system, and easily meets the tough new emission regulations that were introduced back in 2008. In addition to the existing 280hp/1100Nm engine, an even more powerful 330hp/1,250Nm version is now available.

And when it comes to resale, the MAN’s sound reputation for productivity and strength has seen the model command the highest values on the used-truck market.

It is this unique combination that makes the MAN such a financially astute purchase decision and has helped keep the TGM at the top of the sales charts in this highly specialised field. For more information about the MAN 18t 4 x 4 model, please contact Johan Middag on 9703 3333 or 0400 159 383.

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCESMAN|WESTERN STAR

Having been involved with trucks since the age of 21 and running his own transport business for the past 25 years, Nick Miles knows a thing or two about the business of trucking and transport.

Nick is the owner of Miles Transport, a company specialising

in the transport of cut flowers which is located in the Melbourne suburb of Monbulk – an area of greater Melbourne that is home to some of Australia’s finest flower farms.

Nick’s company transports cut flowers such as tulips and lilies along with other horticultural produce between Melbourne and Sydney with stops at both capital city flower markets. The time sensitive and fragile nature of his cargo requires a careful approach to the selection of his transport equipment, to ensure his flowers reach their destination in perfect

condition.Nick has a fleet of

rigid and single trailers, but with changing load requirements it became apparent that a B-Double set up would be the most efficient and cost effective solution for his future needs. Nick therefore had to look at a truck that would be able to cope with the extra demands of towing a B-Double trailer.

Nick knew Sales Managers Tony Elkins and Paul Dinicol from way back and as he puts it, ‘they put the hard word on me to go with Western Star!’

Sales consultant Mark Englezos was also involved and arranged a demo unit for Nick to evaluate. After a comprehensive test drive Nick duly ordered 2 Western Star FXB’s with 40” Stratosphere sleeper cabs.

Whilst Nick found the Western Star a great truck, what really clinched the deal was the way

Paul, Tony and Mark looked after him. “What really impressed me was the way the guys looked after me throughout the whole purchase process – that’s something that’s really important to me,” Nick said.

“In this game, I want to be looked after for the life of the truck, and that’s what I feel the guys from Patterson Cheney can offer me,’ Nick went on to say.

Nick also purchased 2 brand new Maxi-CUBE refrigerated vans complete with specialised trolleys to protect his precious cargo.

So far he’s been more than pleased with the performance of the Western Stars – both Nick and his drivers are enjoying their time behind the wheel. Nick has a policy of regular fleet updates so an additional Western Star may well be added in the future.

I want to be looked after for the life of the truck, and that’s what I feel the guys from Patterson Cheney can offer me.”

CUSTOMER EXPERIENCESISUZU D-MAX

Burwood Fuel & Fodder Supply originally commenced trading back in 1924 when it was involved with ice and furniture removals. The business then moved into solid fuel, firewood and briquettes, but has since evolved into a grain, animal and pet food supply outlet. One of their specialities is in the area of premium dog food which has seen phenomenal sales growth over the past few years.

Ian McKay started working with the business after school and has been the managing partner of the business for the past 32 years. He puts down the success of the business to building personal relationships with his customers who come from all over Melbourne. Ian hasn’t had to do too much advertising, as most of his business has come from word of mouth.

Ian has recently taken delivery of an Isuzu D-Max to assist with

general deliveries after the Isuzu was recommended to him by a friend. After test driving a D-Max, Ian was convinced that this was the Ute for him and subsequently ordered a 4x4 LS Auto demo model which came fitted with a canopy – a useful addition to protect the variety of goods Ian transports.

One of the things that really drew Ian to the D-Max was the advanced engineering of D-Max that ultimately will result in lower servicing costs.

After living with the D-Max for a couple of months Ian has nothing but praise for the vehicle. “It’s comfortable, very reliable and looks great,” Ian said. The performance is excellent and I’m also achieving good fuel economy,” he went onto say.

The new D-max is the pride of the fleet, and affectionately known around the place as, ‘The Limo.’

One of the other attractions of the vehicle was the towing capability - being a keen fisherman Ian wanted a Ute that would be able to cope with towing an 18ft fibreglass boat. With a 3,000kg towing capacity coupled with the grunt of the 3-litre turbo diesel engine Ian reckons the D-Max will be in its element.

Ian purchased the D-Max from Patterson Cheney Truck Centre, Dandenong. He speaks very highly of sales consultant Adam Folino, whom he describes as

‘First Class.’“Adam was fantastic to deal

with – he couldn’t do enough for me and made the entire purchase process simple and easy. In my business I like to treat people the way I like to be treated and that’s exactly how Adam operates,” Ian went onto say.

Ian also operates another Ute which is approaching changeover time - based on his experiences with his current D-Max, there’s no doubt Isuzu D-Max will be at the top of his shopping list.

Great ute, great service!
