Welcome to the Ninth Annual Flute Fair—Virtual Edition!

We are so happy that you have joined us this weekend—you are in for a real treat!

Here are a few reminders to help navigate this virtual event:

• All attendees must be registered through the FSGP event portal. Please do not share the links with

anyone. Thank you for your cooperation!

• There is one Zoom link for each day—please be sure that you are using the correct link when

logging in for the day.

• You may log in and out as needed, BUT please remember to USE THE SAME FIRST AND LAST

NAME THAT YOU REGISTERED WITH as your Zoom screen name. This will allow the

moderators to quickly recognize you and let you in. A better option if you need to step away is to

just stay logged in and turn off your video until you are ready to return.

• If you sign on in the middle of a session, there may be short delay before being admitted so as not to

interrupt the presentation or performer—please be patient.

• Please be sure to keep your microphone muted unless specifically asked to unmute by the session

host or presenter but please feel free to keep your video on —we’d love to see your smiling faces!

• The handouts for all presenters are posted on the website on the same page as this program. Any

additional materials that presenters choose to share will be posted to this page as they are received.

• If you would like to ask a question, please put it into the chat and a session moderator will ask it for

you.

• Breakout Rooms

• Various rooms will be set up for use by board members, volunteers & presenters. Please do

not enter these rooms if you are not one of those people.

• Each of the 4 Exhibitors will have a Breakout Room available for their use throughout the

day. Please feel free to send them a private message in the chat to see if they are available to

meet you there. You can also enter the Breakout Room to see if they are there. Some may

have their screen sharing set to show you how best to reach them throughout the weekend.

If you can’t find them in the participant list, do feel free to give them a phone call—they’d

love to hear from you! Please see their individual ad page for this weekend’s office hours.

These include several for the school’s flute ensemble – Thomas Sleeper’s Concerto for Flute and Flute Orchestra, Dorothy Hindman’s Mechanisms, and Lansing McLoskey’s que la tierra se partió por su sonido. Valerie Coleman wrote Matisseries for solo flute for Trudy Kane in 2019. In addition to her many solo performances, Kane has taken the Frost Flute Ensemble to perform at the Florida Flute Convention multiple times, and to the NFA Convention, the New York Flute Fair, and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. Kane has also been actively arranging works for flute ensemble. Her publications include arrangements of Act II from Puccini’s La Bohème, Intermezzo to Act III of Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, Smetana’s Overture to the Bartered Bride; flute quartets including: Carmen for Four, Gossec’s Tambourin, Rimsky-Korsakov Flight of the Bumble Bee, and the Final Trio from Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. Sunday, March 7 10:00-10:50 AM Playing Without Pain for Flutists - Integrating Wellness Habits and Preventing Injury Francesca Leo, presenter Taking good care of your mental and physical health is just as important as practicing your instrument. Various studies have demonstrated that the vast majority of musicians develop some type of performance-related injury throughout their careers. Flutists are uniquely vulnerable to developing performance-related injuries due to the asymmetrical nature of their instruments. Join

Francesca Leo, flutist and founder of http://www.playingwithoutpain.com, in an interactive workshop discussing various methods of activating the body's relaxation response, practicing efficiently, and incorporating a physical warm-up into your practice sessions as a way to help prevent injury. During this workshop, Francesca will be discussing a brief overview of statistics and research regarding the prevalence of performance-related injuries in flutists. She will lead participants through a guided meditation and a body scan exercise followed by an improvisationally-based warm-up routine to activate the relaxation response and learn to begin your practice session with ease and freedom. For this online workshop, the audience will need their flute, a pillow or blanket, and a comfortable place to sit or lie down.

11:00-11:50 AM Let's Play Marais! Lish Lindsey, presenter Marin Marais' "Les Folies d'Espagne" for flute alone is an all-in-one playground to explore tone, technique, and phrasing for all players. Bring your piccolo, flute, or harmony flute to this hands-on workshop, where you will explore effective and efficient ways for you to find your voice through Marais' music, sixteen measures at a time.
