True Blue Newsletter of Columbus / Columbus North High School Alumni Association
Message From Our President
Dear Bull Dog Nation,
The Bull Dog Alumni Association, along with
dedicated alumni, faculty and staff, and current
students worked hard to make the 150-year milestone
a memorable experience in many ways as we
celebrated the rich tradition of Columbus High
School/Columbus North High School. It was truly a
remarkable effort and one with multi-generational
participation: from members of the Columbus High
School class of 1944 to the Columbus North High
School 2019 student leaders. I wish to thank everyone
who helped make this celebration a huge success! I
especially wish to thank Hedy George, our executive
director, for her Bull Dog persistence in leading the
150th celebration efforts. She received a well-deserved
standing ovation at the May gala event.
The Four Freshmen Concert kicked off our 150th
celebration. I thank Larry Ruble for this great idea and
Janie Losure Gordon for running the show! Another
special highlight included the establishment of the
Veteran’s Memorial Wall inside Columbus North
High School in November 2018. Another significant
commemoration spearheaded by co-chairs Tami Iorio
and Janice Montgomery was the writing of a book
entitled The Story of CNHS: 150 Years, which
provided a comprehensive look at the history of our
beloved school. Special thanks go to co-authors Larry
Ruble, Terry Trautman, Kim Stover, and Julia Iorio;
editors Bud Herron, Shirley Lyster, and Pat McKee;
and book layout designer Roth Lovins. These
individuals contributed greatly to this effort. If you do
not already have a copy of the book, you will want
one!
The capstone event held at Mill Race Center on May
11, 2019 reflected all the best of the Columbus North
High School. The evening festivities included a video
produced by current students with interviews of
alumni throughout the generations, a performance of
the current and alumni members of the Debuteens and
Music Men show choirs directed by one of our Bull
Dog alumni board members, Janie Losure Gordon, and
the surprise appearance of Bartholomew Consolidated
School Corporation Superintendent, Dr. Jim Roberts,
in his cameo role as Elvis the King. The singing of the
Columbus High School/Columbus North High School
alma mater and school song provided a splendid finish
for the evening.
The yearlong 150th anniversary celebration, which
represented the true essence of the Bull Dog spirit, was
not made possible without the help of many. I am
sincerely thankful for all those who contributed their
time and talents to make this celebration a fantastic
success.
With the past 150 years behind us, your Bull Dog
Alumni Association is dedicated to ensuring the future
of Columbus North High School will be as bright as
its past.
Yours in Bull Dog Service,
Pete

School is Back in Session!
The 2019-2020 School Year is going strong at CNHS!
Let’s all be careful when driving in that 25th/27th –
Maple/Home area.
There are just over 2,000 students at CNHS this
academic year. At last count, there were between 35
and 40 languages spoken by this year’s students.
You can stay abreast of what’s happening at CNHS at:
http://www.bcsc.k12.in.us/Page/1324
One date to note right now is Homecoming on
September 20. Always a great night to be a Bull Dog!
Mark those calendars and plan to be at Max Andress
Field in time for the 7:00 kick-off for an evening of
gridiron action, additional festivities, and catching-up
with other Bull Dogs!
Come out early, get a good parking space, and check
out the Bull Dog Alumni Brick Plaza before the game.
The Brick Plaza (which now contains over 500
engraved bricks) is located just north of the school’s
main entrance and just southwest of the football field.
Get your homecoming memories started early!!
Go Dogs!!
Reunion Season in Full Swing
The 2019 reunion season has begun. The Class of
1979 (40th) and Class of 1959 (60th) have concluded
their events.
The Class of 1974 (September 7) and the Class of 1969
(September 13-14) are currently preparing for their
reunions. If you’re a member of one of these classes
and haven’t connected yet, Contact Us; and we will
get you in touch with the appropriate people.
Of course, if you’re planning to have a reunion in
2020, it’s never too early to start your planning. We
know the Class of ’70 is working on their
preparations.
Your Bull Dog Alumni Association stands ready to
assist in any way we can, as well. You can always

Our third installment of Alumni Board profiles
features Nathan Frasier & Sandy Hutton Carmichael.
Board Profile – Nathan Frasier
Dr Nathan Frasier has been married to his high school
(CNHS!) sweetheart Sarah for 12 years. They are the
proud parents of sons CJ (age 7) and Cooper (age 4).
Nathan has owned and operated Frasier Chiropractic
and Sports clinic and MVP sports for 12 years.
After graduating CNHS in 2000, Nathan attended IU
(2003) and Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport
Iowa (2007).
As part of his education, Nathan was the president of
sports injury club and traveled the country teaching
sports injuries with a well-known sports chiropractor.
Since returning home he has been on Alumni
Association board, CYP board, and has served as
president of local BNI group. He has been involved
with coaching CNHS basketball (7 years), CNHS
baseball (5 years), and youth soccer. He has served on
the PAAL board, won Maverick award in 2009 for
New and Emerging Business in Columbus, and, in
2009, was named one of the top 20 professionals to
watch under 40 in Columbus.
Nate enjoys all things sports. He is an avid golfer and
loves doing adventurous things, such as sky diving,
cliff jumping, and bungee jumping. He hopes one of
his boys will someday join him as his wife will not!
Nate enjoys rehabbing young athletes back to
playing shape. Watching and helping them overcome
adversity is what really keeps him going. He says, “I
love learning a kid’s dream and helping him or her
achieve it”.

Board Profile – Sandy Hutton
Carmichael
A 1967 Columbus High School graduate, Sandy has
two children -- Stacey Horn and Brandon Anderson.
Both are graduates of Columbus North. She also has
eight grandchildren. Additionally, she has a rescue
dog named Beau.
Her main interests and hobbies center around her
grandchildren and supporting them by attending as
many of their activities as time allows.
Last year, Sandy also mentored a student at
Columbus North for her senior project and hopes to
be a mentor this current school year. As a valuable
board member of the Alumni Association, she enjoys
working at various events sponsored by the
association.
Sandy holds a nursing degree from Indiana
University.
She spent over 30 years involved with the local
Hospice center --- helping to start it and serving as its
first director. The local center was named in her
honor in 2013.
Since the early days of her involvement with
Hospice, Sandy has been a statewide leader in
promoting the Hospice concept.
Additionally, she helped originate Columbus’ annual
Labor Day weekend Hospice concert and has
garnered numerous state honors including a
Sagamore of the Wabash Award and the first
“Legacy Award” given by the Indiana Association of
Hospices.
She was among nationwide honorees at a White
House reception hosted by First Lady Barbara Bush
in 1991 for her work in pioneering the Hospice
concept in Indiana and served as an American
delegate to China as part of the first Terminal Illness
delegation.
Sandy was inducted into the Bull Dog Alumni Hall
of Fame in 2018.
Thanks, Nate & Sandy!

The Story of CHS / CNHS:
150 Years
If you don’t already have your copy of our history
book, there are still some copies from our first
printing remaining.
The multi-authored, collaborative effort by several
alumni and former BCSC staff to create the first
printed history book of our school was an exciting
adventure. The result became the first published
history of the school; and we hope to use the
momentum to build on collective, documented history,
as well as to inspire current and future Bull Dogs to
carry on the legacy!
You can pick them up at Viewpoint Books on
Washington Street or the Columbus North bookstore.
For those of you not local to the Columbus area, online
purchases can be made from our website (under the
SUPPORT tab) at:

NASCAR Hall of Fame
Welcomes a Bull Dog
On May 22, NASCAR announced the inductees who
will comprise the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of
2020. The five-person group includes Columbus’
own Tony Stewart (CNHS ’89) along with Buddy
Baker, Joe Gibbs, Bobby Labonte, and Waddell
Wilson. The distinguished group will be honored
during the NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction
Ceremony on Jan. 31, 2020, in Charlotte, NC.
Tony is a three-time NASCAR series champion (and,
here’s a bit of trivia for you --- the only driver ever to
win the Winston Cup, the Nextel Cup, and the Sprint
Cup!). Maybe you can win a cup of coffee over
breakfast someday with that morsel of information!
Tony was the top vote-getter among this class of
inductees!
Congratulations, Smoke!!
Once a Bull Dog,
Always a Bull Dog!

Teacher of the Year- SUE GREEN
Each year the Bull Dog Alumni Association
recognizes a CNHS teacher as Teacher of the Year.
Nominations are collected from students and reviewed
by a selection committee (from CNHS staff and the
Alumni Association) according to a set of criteria that
includes (among others) such things as:
• Positive & consistent classroom environment
• High expectations of students
• Motivation of students
• Timely feedback to students
• Positive student & parent relationships
The recently honored Teacher of the Year from the
2018-19 school year is Spanish teacher Sue Green from the CNHS World Language department.
You can see a quick video of Sue receiving her award
by clicking on the link below:

Sue also received a $1,000 stipend as part of her
award.
From students, staff, and the Alumni Association ---
Thanks for all you do, Sue!!
150th Anniversary Gala
The Gala Reunion that marked the “official” end of
our 150th Anniversary Celebration was great fun for
lots of folks. We had the Mill Race Center filled to (a
little past!) capacity for a wonderful evening of fun,
fellowship and (Bull Dog) family that included Bull
Dogs dating back to classes in the 1940s and including
current students!
One of the highlights was a little song-session led by
current (May 2019) Debuteen group and Debuteen
alumni. Catch a couple tunes in the video below:

What a legacy we all share!! We doubt that any of us
will be around to celebrate the next 150 years(!), but
what we each do today and tomorrow will strengthen
the foundation upon which all the current and future
Bull Dogs will shape OUR shared legacy!

Bill Stultz Receives Rotary Award
Retired CNHS Bands Director Bill Stultz recently
received The Alice Curry “Music Makes Your Life”
Award.
Retired and Still Making a Difference
The award is presented annually by the Columbus
Rotary Club in recognition of a citizen or organization
who has made significant contributions to the quality
of life in our community by bringing, encouraging,
and sustaining music in our Columbus community.
As Executive Director of the Columbus Indiana
Philharmonic (CIP), active Rotarian, and community
leader, Alice Curry epitomized these qualities.
Each year the local Rotary Club makes a cash donation
to the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic in the name of
the award winner.
Thanks to the Columbus Rotarians and to Mr. Stultz
for being a part of enabling the Philharmonic’s
continued gift of music to our community!
Annual Campaign Coming
The 2019 Annual Campaign drive is just around the
corner. Our annual drive is the financial cornerstone
of our Alumni Association.
Please look expectantly for a message from one of
your fellow alumni. Consider the Alumni Association
in your annual charity strategy. The more we’re
around the staff and students at CNHS, the more
excited we become to equip them and enable them for
the great futures they have ahead of them. This writer
has been involved with the Alumni Association for six
years now; and those years have been incredibly
fulfilling, in part due to association with so many
awesome Bull Dogs.
Hopefully, many of you have seen the photo below in
a recent news article already, but please enjoy (photo
courtesy of The Republic). The stone adorned
Columbus’ first public school building in 1859. It’s
now part of the Central Middle School complex, not
far from the site of that first building.
The engraved stone pretty much says it all. The
times have changed, but not the mission has not.
Please join us on that mission!!

Thank You to our Recent Donors!
Thanks to each of you, the Bull Dog Alumni
Association and our Special Funds and Endowments
are making a big difference for Columbus North
Students, Faculty, and all Bull Dog Alumni.
In 2018, we provided over $20,000 to CNHS students
and departments for scholarships and student and
faculty support projects – and we are on track to grant
a similar amount in 2019. Besides scholarships for
new Bull Dog alums to use for post-graduate
education, grants were made for a wide range of
academic and extracurricular projects that helped
current students and faculty excel.
In addition, in 2018 and 2019, we celebrated the 150th
anniversary of Columbus/Columbus North High
School with a series of special events and projects
culminating in the May 11th 150th Anniversary Gala
Reunion and the publication of The Story of CNHS,
150 Years – the 160-page hardcover history of the
school.
Over 300 generous individuals, families, and
organizations made these 2018 and 2019 projects
possible by donating during 2017, 2018 or 2019.
Thank you, Donors!
Many donors made their donations to the Bull Dog
Alumni Association general fund, to be used in the
area of greatest need. Other donors directed their
contributions to specific projects like the John Johnson
Studio Production Scholarship or the publication of
our School History book. Many others donated to one
of our Special Funds or Endowments. These
donations are invested so that scholarships and grants
may be made from the funds for many years to come:
• Marian Callon Endowment
• John Carmichael “True Blue” Endowment
• Michael Garber Memorial Fund
• John Hinds Tradition of Excellence Fund
• Shirley Lyster Endowment for Excellence in
English Education
• Andy Russell Endowment for the Performing
Arts
The Donor Honor Roll on the following pages
attempts to recognize all our generous donors during
the 2017-to-early-2019 period. We have tried very
hard to:
• Include all donors
• Spell names correctly
• Provide correct CHS/CNHS graduating class
data
• Honor the wishes of those donors who choose
to remain anonymous
We apologize for any mistakes or omissions. Please
email us at [email protected] with any
corrections or additions.

History Interviews
One exciting activity that occurred as part of our 150th
Anniversary activities was a project undertaken by the
CNHS Media Department to interview alumni from
several different (eight!) decades.
They were able to schedule, interview, and archive
interviews with over thirty alumni. Graduating classes
represented ranged from:
1944 --- 2015

New Website
In July, a newer version of our website was launched.
Essentially, the underlying technology supporting the
old website became obsolete and unsupported; so,
changes were imperative.
It looks different that the previous website.
We ask that you please check it out and let us know
what you think.
It is located at the same address as the former:
https://www.columbusnorthalumni.org/
Gone are some of the intermediate web pages which
have been replace by “drop-down” options from the
main menu bar.
So, please explore; and let us know what you think
about:
• Content
• Appearance
• Ease of use
• Any confusing areas
• Suggested changes or additions
• Any errors encountered?
We really appreciate any feedback you take the time
to provide us.
You can email us your comments at:
Please put “NEW WEBSITE” in the subject line of
your message. Thanks, and happy exploring!!
