T rue Patriot Love Foundation (TPL) is a national charity with the mission to inspire every Canadian to contribute to the resilience and well-being of our military and Veteran families. Since 2009,

TPL has provided more than $18 million to support military families, including supporting more than 100 community-based programs across the country that address the unique challenges resulting from service including mental health, physical rehabilitation, transitioning to civilian life, and the special needs of children. In addition, TPL con-tributes to advancements in research and technology through our $5 million commitment to the Canadian Institute for Military and Veterans Health Research (Queen’s University).

65,000 regular force military families are impacted by

deployment and the day-to-day upheaval of military life.

700,000 Veterans and their families currently living in Canada,

many of which are impacted by challenges related to transitioning

to civilian life.

1,000 military personnel are medically released each year,

with 700 spouses and 900 children also impacted.

60% of medically released military personnel have

permanent physical limitations.

13.5% of CAF personnel were diagnosed with a mental disorder

attributable to Afghanistan deployment four years later.

38% of discharged military personnel fall between the cracks after their service.

THE NEED

Over the years, we have worked closely with Veterans Affairs Canada and Health Services in the Canadian Armed Forces to inform our funding decisions so that we are choosing programs that complement and enhance existing government-funded programs. In making funding decisions, we also benefit from the advice of our external Disbursement Advisory Committee, which is comprised of experts from across the country that represent government, academic, health care and military communities. Specifically, the committee assists in identifying areas of greatest need, evaluating the proposals that we receive and making funding recommendations to the TPL Board of Directors.

Caring for military families has always been a priority for TPL. We recognize the sacrifices our military families make so that their loved ones can continue to protect our country and realize that the impact of service is long lasting and can be felt within military families even after a serving member retires. With your help, we fund programs that directly support and enhance the lives of children and youth in all regions of Canada.

When serving members retire, transitioning to civilian life can offer many unique challenges, not only for the Veteran but for the entire family. TPL funds programs that help make the transition easier by fostering new skill-development, providing mentorship opportunities, and supporting physical health and rehabilitation needs.

One thousand Canadian military personnel are medically released each year, with 40% of them returning home with psychological injuries. TPL has made a commitment to support the mental health and well-being of our military families by funding programs across Canada that help overcome mental illness through counselling, support groups, clinical tools and mental health first aid.

60% of medically released military personnel have permanent physical limitations. With your support, TPL is committed to funding initiatives, like home modifications and vehicle purchases, that enhance the physical health and rehabilitation of severely injured military members and their families.

CPL. DAVID MacDONALD

Royal Canadian Regiment Infantry Officer Years Served: 4 Himalayas Expedition

“ Everyday is a challenge, but you have to accept that challenge and get over it. My war with the Taliban ended that day in March, but my war with my injuries just began and it’s a war I continue to fight.”

BRUNO GUÉVREMONT

Fleet Diving Unit (P) Leading Seaman Years Served: 14 North Pole Expedition

“ True Patriot Love has opened the doors of opportunity for me. When I was first asked to go on the North Pole Expedition (2014), I was uncertain of what to expect and where I was on my road to recovery. The expedition, the struggles and the austere environment provided the right tools to help me deal with some of my toughest issues. Coupled with the unending care and willingness to help from every single business leader, it made this stage of my journey a complete success.”

SGT. ANOUK BEAUVAIS

Canadian Forces Reserve Combat Engineer and PSYOPS Analyst Years Served: 9 Antarctica Expedition

“ My TPL expedition journey was a real life changing experience. All of the positive events that have happened in my life in the past year are as a result of the incredible people I met while climbing the highest mountain in Antarctica.”

Past TPL Expeditions Have Helped Fund:

Here’s What Our Success Looks Like:

A $500,000 investment to create a virtual reality treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which

is now being used by 54 trained clinicians in 7 clinics

across the country.

More than 7,500 hours of peer-to-peer mental health counselling.

The purchase of 3 modified vehicles and funded the retrofitting of 4 homes for families of injured Veterans.

Rapid job placement for 144 injured soldiers.
