Truett Baptist WMU Report and Challenge 2008 As this new year began, the Truett WMU realized that we were blessed by the support and commitment of our churches, our associational missionary and the asso-ciation. We want to take this opportunity to thank you. We also want to thank all churches who hosted WMU events during the 2007-2008 calendar. The Annual Quilt-ing was a great success! Truett has provided good leadership as recognized by the selection of many past leaders chosen to serve even outside the Association. Our prayers should espe-cially include: Jeff and Regina Palmer and family (BGR), Alys Hill (Journeyman), William Gray and Family (Associational Missionary), Joe Shannon and Family (Linkup Staff), Tammy Saffel (President for Tennessee WMU) and Sydney Saffel (Tn. State Acteen Panelist). We know there is successful mission work all around the world sponsored by other sources and denominations, but the Cooperative Program and the mission of Southern Baptist is a part of our foundational heritage and the future. Jesus has called us to a Great Commission, so we must learn and teach; support in prayer and by giving; and follow through in action. Our missions work is not just a WMU func-tion as many have come to realize. It truly is a part of each individuals hearts work. Every man, woman, teen and child is a missionary with a calling…prepare, help plant seeds, and work in the harvest.

Our WMU portion of the collective ACP Report shows 7 of our 13 churches has active mission groups with an enrollment of 292 members. We have 2 churches that have children/teen missions groups. This year has been exciting as we have seen more churches express interest in beginning new mission organizations. Let us work together to educate our members to the knowledge of their calling. Call on your associations WMU leaders to help and please help me share your church’s work and activities at the Executive Board meetings. Hope to see you as I try to visit our churches and ladies in this new year.

Let’s work till Jesus Comes, Carmen Westerman

Tennessee Missions and Ministry Report We are living in a time of great challenge. Three of these challenges are:

• Reaching people drowning in the culture we live in for Christ. • Calling out the called to be leaders in the church. • Financing adequately for the mission mandate of taking the gospel to all people.

The Evangelism Team of the State Missions staff has been working on an evangelism strategy to call all Tennessee Baptists to be involved in reaching Tennessee with the Gospel. While the team began its journey toward this strategy over a year ago, we are excited to see how God was at work as the new Southern Baptist Convention strategy: “GPS – God’s Plan for Sharing” fits like a hand in a glove with the team’s strategy. This strategy will be shared at this year’s An-nual Meeting of Tennessee Baptists at First Baptist Church, Hendersonville. In 2009, we are calling all Tennessee Baptists to unite together as we have never before in Praying for the Har-vest. At last year’s Annual Meeting, the Convention received a report from the Relational Strategic Study Committee. This report called for a greater emphasis on working with young leaders in our Convention. As we began to examine this situation by calling on our Church Staff Affinity Team to give some direction, they discovered a statistic that should call all of us to concern: Only 10% of Tennessee Baptist churches are pastored by someone less than 35 years of age. We plead for a diligent emphasis in Calling out the Called by present leadership. Furthermore, that those of us in leadership positions begin to find young leaders in order to mentor the next generation of vocational and lay leaders in our churches. This year has brought financial challenges to us all and the support of missions is not immune. In the midst of all of this, the State Missions staff is very thankful for the continued support of the Cooperative Program and the record giving to the Golden Offering for Tennessee Missions. We exceeded the goal of $1,640,000. In order to strengthen the financial support of the local church and the Cooperative Program, we have launched a stewardship and Cooperative Program campaign, Ten x Ten in Tennessee - a call for every member to give at least a tithe, and for every church to give at least 10 percent through the Cooperative Program. This campaign is being conducted through our associational ministers over the next three years. Be looking for this associational ministry to come to your area in the next three years, and please be involved prayerfully for this endeavor. A final word is that with the end of this year, we will be closing our partnership with Rio de Janiero. Over the 10 years of the partnership, 5,000+ volunteers have served. Thank you to all. As a result, we will begin a new partnership with West Africa. Prior to the Convention, we will host a West Africa Summit at First Baptist Church, Hendersonville, on November 5–7. For details, go to www.gowestafrica.org. James Porch, Executive Director-Treasurer
