COLOMBIAColumbia continues to be at the
top of the list in terms of countries
where emeralds are found. It has
about 150 known deposits, though
not all of these are currently being
exploited. The best known names
are Muzo and Chivor, where
emeralds were mined by the Incas
in the pre-Columbian times.
Columbian emeralds differ from
emeralds at other deposits mainly
because of their lustre, colour and
a rare kind of bluish tint.
Columbia is by far the world's
largest producer of emeralds,
constituting 50-95% of the world
production. The three main mining
areas in Columbia are Muzo,
Chivor and Coscuez.
ZAMBIAExcellent emerald crystals in a beautiful
and deep emerald green colour, with
good transparency come from Zambia.
Their colour is usually darker than that
of Columbian emeralds, and usually has
a slightly bluish undertone. Zambia is
the world's second largest producer, with
its Kafubu river area deposits (Kagem
Mines) about 45Km (28 mi) southwest of
Kitwe, and is responsible for 20% of
world's production of gem quality stones
in 2004. In the rst half 2011, Kegem
mines produced 3.74 tons of emeralds.
apphireSBlue, the royal gemstone
exudes the colour of sky and
the sea, is the most iconic gemstone
on earth.
KASHMIRSpecialists and connoisseurs
regard the Kashmir colour, with its
velvety shine, as the most beautiful
and valuable blue sapphire. The
most valuable are the Kashmir
stones. These magnicent
gemstones from Kashmir were
found in 1880 after a landslide at
an altitude of 16000 feet and were
mined extensively over a period of
eight years and left a unique idea
on people's mind for the colour of a
rst class sapphire. Typical
Kashmir colour is pure, intense
deep blue with a very subtle violet
undertone, which is further
intensied by ne silky shine. It is
said that this blue does not change
in articial lights.
BURMAMyanmar's sapphire mining is
centred in the Mogok Valley.
Mining is a mix of mechanised
and primitive techniques, and
gems may be extracted from pits in
alluvial elds, open trenches in
hillsides, excavations of limestone
caves, and tunnels in host rocks.
ubyRThe colour of love, radiates
vitality. It is the king of gemstones
and one of the hardest minerals.
BURMA / MYANMAR
MOZAMBIQUEMozambique has recently been
producing a number of both
commercial and ne quality rubies
which is similar to the legendary
Burmese origin. This has become
one of the most important sources
of ruby.
Mogok Valley in upper Myanmar
(Burma) was, for centuries, the
world's main source of rubies. The
region has produced some of the
best rubies ever mined but in recent
years, very few good rubies have
been mined here. The very best
colour in Myanmar rubies is
considered as 'pigeon's blood red'.
In central Myanmar, the area of
Mong Hsu began producing rubies
during the 1990s and rapidly
became the world's main ruby
mining area. The most recently
found ruby deposit in Myanmar is
in Namya (Namyazeik) located in
the northern state of Kachin.

Fancy Sapphires are the romantic
new way of expressing love. Every
colour has it own personality.
CEYLON / SRI LANKAThe oldest sapphire nds are in
Ceylon or Sri Lanka, as we know it
today. There, people were already
digging for gemstones since
ancient times. The specialist
recognises Ceylon sapphires by the
luminosity of their light to mid-
blue colours. Many consider the Sri
Lankan sapphires to be the best in
the world. A range of coloured
sapphires can be found here,
including the rare Padparadschas.
Approximately 90% of the world's
star sapphires also come from the
island. The sapphires from Sri
Lanka are known for their
distinctive clarity.
Madagascar is truly the leader of pink sapphires today. The quality
and quantity are unrivalled by any other source. For the rst time ever,
this unique colour in sapphire is available in reasonably reliable
supply. Most of these sapphires come out of the ground with good
clarity as well, leaving the customary extreme heat treatment
to a minimum.
MADAGASCAR
BURMA / MYANMARSapphires are found in quantity in only a few localities in the region,
but they can be enormous – cut gems of over 100 carats have been
known. Colorless, purple, blue, violet, yellow, pink, and green,
sapphires are mined in the area. Star sapphires from Myanmar are
known for having stars that are noticeably more clear and distinct
than those from other sources.
Kundan
MeenaTraditional play of diamond Polkis
with glistening Kundan and ne
strokes of Meenakari create a regal
charm.
An epic uidly oats in the air when a masterpiece is crafted and waits to be recorded, read
and re-read. The saga of a necklace that has been made by a diligent craftsman with
unparalleled sincerity towards his craft is left unsaid, until you pick up that piece of jeweller
and see it for yourself.
Using the Mughal style of Partash, this necklace has been hand crafted to perfection by its
Kariagar who is dexterous in his craft and almost a cynic when it comes to perfection. The
400year old art of jewellery making has come down through generations and is skilfully used
to maintain precision and perfection. The more-than-four-century-old-art took not less than
four months for this artisan to give it its actual life.
This Partash necklace embodies ne carvings on
glistening gold and the illuminating precious stones like
Rubies and Emeralds are encrusted in 24 karat Kundan.
The ultrane Polkis of diamonds add to the radiance of
this brilliant adornment. Gently turn and glance the back
of the necklace and another story of nest Meenakari is
densely spread all over.
