TRUMAN STATE UNIVERSITY

November 2013

Homecoming is a time for current students and alumni to gather togeth-er with family, friends, and the Kirksville com-munity. The whole week is full of traditions that celebrate Truman State University’s long history.

As part of this year’s annual homecoming pa-rade, many of Truman’s international students teamed with the Kirks-ville Rotary Club to dressed in traditional clothing and proudly marched through the streets, waving their flags and representing their countries. Di Zhu, a sophomore student from China who transferred to

Truman after a year in the exchange program, said, “I am so proud of China, and this is a time that I can represent my country. China has changed so much and I want to show its won-derful history and cul-

ture to Truman and the Kirksville community.”

Truman has become a home to many students like Di Zhu. She told the ISAO, “I really love Tru-man because it’s a nice place to study. It is full of good students and very good academic re-sources and equipment. It is good for me to study here.”

International Students studying at Truman can look forward to a strong support structure of both American and in-ternational stu-dents. Truman strives to make sure that this sup-port continues after ac-ceptance and orienta-tion, which is where Aca-demic Success Mentors (ASMs) come into play.

Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

Once again the Society

for Sino-American Stud-ies’ (SSAS) Mid-Autumn Moon Festival was a huge success! The event began with the playing of tradi-tional drums, followed by the story of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess of Immor-tality. Music, dances, and stories filled the Student Activities Building as stu-dents performed to cele-

brate September’s full moon. Years of tradition and the modern lives of students were combined into the event. Over one hundred Truman stu-

dents, families, and staff attended to enjoy the tra-ditional Chinese food and entertainment!

SSAS has been a source of support for Asian stu-dents studying at Truman for many years. SSAS members regularly spend time together having fun and supporting each other in academics, relation-ships, and activities.

In SSAS, returning Tru-man students from study abroad sites in China, Chi-nese students studying at

Truman, and other Asian students come together to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival and many other traditional Chinese celebrations each year.

ASMs are a group of successful upper-level Tru-man students who work specifically with interna-tional students. All new students are assigned an ASM mentor to meet with each week throughout the first semester. With the ASM, students will discuss and explore classes, grades, study skills, and adjusting to life here at

Truman. Every ASM enjoys the opportunity to work with students from around the world! International students who study at Tru-man already have a record of academic achievement, and ASMs are there to en-sure students continue to succeed.

Academic Success Men-tor Coordinator Rachel McNeil enthusiastically speaks about the program

whenever she gets a chance. “From my experi-ence, Truman is a unique school in how much it cares about helping its in-ternational population succeed academically and socially. Truman is a pret-ty rigorous but fulfilling school, and I think it is amazing that each incom-ing student gets one on one attention their first semester here.”

Truman Celebrates

Nepalese Dashain

The month of Kartik, late September and early Octo-ber, signals the longest and most festive event of the Nepalese annual calendar, Dashain! It is the celebra-tion of good over evil that surrounds the story of a goddess from the kingdom of Nepal who destroyed an evil demon named Mahi-shasura.

Just as it is celebrated by every Nepalese family, the students of the Nepalese organization on campus, Namaste Nepal, invited all Truman students, profes-sors, and families to enjoy and take part in this happy

tradition! Singing, dancing, games,

and prizes were followed by spicy and delicious Nep-alese dishes. Smoke Signals, a band well-known in Kirksville started by Nepa-lese Truman students, even made a guest appearance!

Brian Cheah, Senior Ma-laysian Truman student, said, “The food was great and a taste of home, since Malaysia has a lot of spicy South Asian food. Namaste Nepal picked very good vo-calists and performances. I enjoyed all of them, and I would love to visit Nepal one day!”
