Trust invests in new SimPad technology to train medical students

The Midland Training and Simulation Centre team at the Trust provided an excellent training opportunity for a total of 102 Foundation Year 1 doctors and medical students. A disused ward in the Geoffrey Hodges Wing was brought to life once again with a state of the art medical simulation.

Actors and staff from various backgrounds worked together to create a realistic ward setting for the development and practice of essential clinical skills. Venepuncture, annulations and multidisciplinary team working were among many things practiced in a safe learning environment. Important patient safety issues were covered such as infection prevention and control, safe prescribing and correct management of common medical emergencies. Participants left feeling confident and competent to provide good patient care.

Sharon Kilkie, Simulation & Clinical Skills Trainer said: “We are proud to be one of the first hospitals in the country to invest in the new SimPad technology which enables simulation of sick patients with real people rather than a manikin.

She added: “All four days were very well received and feedback was excellent. The team would like to run more of these days in the near future and would like to thank all the people who offer their continual support to make these events such a resounding success.”

Trust staff to become Dementia ChampionsOver sixty staff from clinical and non-clinical backgrounds at the Trust have volunteered to become Dementia Champions.

The Dementia Champions Programme, which launched last month in conjunction with the University of Wolverhampton, was open to all staff across the Trust from doctors and therapists to telephonists and radiographers.

A large part of the Champion’s role will be to engage with carers and family members about how best to look after patients with Dementia.

A two-day education programme began last week which saw seventeen Dementia Champions become the first Trust staff members to go through the programme, covering topics such as understanding people in distress, therapies which can be used to help patients with dementia, and practical ways their own service can be improved to help dementia patients.

Speakers at the event included Trevor Jarvis, an Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Society who was diagnosed with early on-set dementia and Gill Maidens from the Centre for Applied Research and Education in Dementia at the University of Wolverhampton.

For further information about the Dementia Champions Programme, please contact Alison Haynes, Lead Dementia Nurse on 01283 566333 extension 4738.

Radiology Department to improve access times to CT scanning

The Radiology department at Queen’s Hospital would like to improve access times to CT scanning for patients who will require intravenous contrast-media prior to imaging.

Currently patients may be delayed as there is no recent, i.e. within three months, blood test result to determine the GFR. It is recommended that contrast can only be given if the GFR is above 60 and hydration of the patient is required if the GFR is between 40 and 60.

Therefore to prevent delays to the patient’s pathway, staff are requesting that GPs ensure that at the time of referral there is an appropriate blood test result that is less than three months old. In the absence of this please ensure that you order the appropriate test at the same time or before the referral for CT.

Trust backs national campaign to promote the benefits of clinical research

Improving the patient journey – 23-hour Unit at the Treatment Centre

Patients who have undergone Urogynaecology operations at the 23-hour facility at the Treatment Centre and the staff that treated them were invited to discuss how the patient journey could be improved.

The 23-hour facility, which opened earlier this year, provides routine operations in a number of specialities such as gynaecology, orthopaedics, general surgery and ear, nose and throat.

Feedback from patients on the day was extremely positive and highlighted how the facility had helped to improve patient access and provide an enhanced recovery for patients.

Mrs Lingam, Consultant for Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Trust, explained why the treatment at the new facility had been such a success: “Since the National accreditation for Urogynaecology, staff at the unit have pushed the frontier covering most of what we do as either day cases or 23-hour surgery which is better for the patient.

During November and December Burton Hospitals will be taking part in a national campaign called “Research Changed My Life” to help patients to understand the positive effects that can result from getting involved in clinical research.

The campaign has been organised by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network, and the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust will be helping to spearhead the campaign as one of the Network’s newly appointed “host” organisations.

On the day of the launch - Thursday 28 November - the Trust will hold a patient awareness stand from 10am – 3pm in the reception area of Queen’s Hospital. Patients can find out about the clinical research studies we are undertaking, and about the Research Changed My Life website, which contains inspirational stories from patients around the country who have taken part in clinical studies.

If you’d like to submit a comment or story about how clinical research has made a positive difference to your patients, you can:

• Telephone the campaign phoneline – 0300 311 99 66 - and leave a message giving your name, job title and our Trust name, followed by your comment or (brief) story, OR

• Tweet your comment to #RCML, OR• Send a message via Facebook to /NihrClinicalResearchNetwork

You can also support the campaign by telling your patients about the Research Changed My Life website www.crncc.nihr.ac.uk/ppi/research_changed_my_life

“The team at the Treatment Centre is dedicated to treating patients having elective surgery only, and patients have found this personal service highly satisfactory.

She added: “We have also rolled out the enhanced recovery programme which has had a major part to play in the patient’s recovery. This involves patient education about their own care and recovery, better analgesia and post operative care resulting in early hospital discharge. Patients also found the after care support that they received in the form of a phone call the week following their surgery reassuring and supportive.”

The hospital will be focusing on increasing such services at the Treatment Centre to achieve the Quality Strategy which has been outlined for 2013-2015 which includes enhanced recovery programme as well as positive patient experience.
