• The question is not why do things happen but how do I now respond?

Job 1:8 Then the LORD said to Satan, Have you

considered my servant Job? There is no-one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil


Job1:20-22

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I shall depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised. 22In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.


Job 2:9,10

His wife said to him, Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die! 10 He replied, You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.


Job 2:13

Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No-one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was.

Job 38-41 God speaks to Job for the first time and questions him.


Job 38:1-3

1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the storm. He said: 2Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? 3 Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me.


Job 38 4-5

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. 5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?

Job 38:8

"Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,


Job 38 16-21

16 "Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea or walked in the recesses of the deep? 17 Have the gates of death been shown to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? 18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth? Tell me, if you know all this.


19 "What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside? 20 Can you take them to their places? Do you know the paths to their dwellings? 21 Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years!


Job 38:32-35

32 Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs? 33 Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God's dominion over the earth?


34 "Can you raise your voice to the clouds and cover yourself with a flood of water? 35 Do you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, 'Here we are'?


Job 39:1 1 "Do you know when the mountain

goats give birth? Do you watch when the doe bears her fawn?

Job 39:9

"Will the wild ox consent to serve you? Will he stay by your manger at night?


Job 39:19

"Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane?

Job 39:26-27

26 "Does the hawk take flight by your wisdom and spread his wings toward the south? 27Does the eagle soar at your command and build his nest on high?


Job 40:1-2

1The LORD said to Job: 2Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who accuses God answer him!


• Job you have very little knowledge of the physical universe. How can you question how I handle the spiritual and moral areas of life?

Job 40:4

I am unworthy- how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. 5 I spoke once, but I have no answer— twice, but I will say no more.


Job 40:7-14 7 "Brace yourself like a man;

I will question you, and you shall answer me. 8 "Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?


9 Do you have an arm like God's, and can your voice thunder like his? 10 Then adorn yourself with glory and splendour, and clothe yourself in honour and majesty. 11 Unleash the fury of your wrath, look at every proud man and bring him low, 12 look at every proud man and humble him, crush the wicked where they stand.


13 Bury them all in the dust together; shroud their faces in the grave. 14 Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.

Then Job replied to the LORD: I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted

Job 42:3

You asked, 'Who is this that obscures my counsel without knowledge?' Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know.


3. Storms give me the opportunity to know God in deeper ways

Job 42:5

My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.


4. Repent not rebel in the storms

Job 42:6

Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.
