2019 Festival of the Arts | 32 | Festival of the Arts 2019
Welcome to the 24th Annual Festival of the Arts! Since its modest beginnings in 1995, the Festival has become not only one of Destin’s premier events, but a testament to the power of art in our lives. It holds a respected position in the Destin community earning a reputation for excellence.
We are proud to introduce over 100 talented artists from across the country and Europe. Each year art enthusiasts and seasoned collectors see newly created works by well-known and emerging artists and have the opportunity to be in direct contact with the artists who create these unique works. We love supporting artists in all disciplines because we see the ripple effect this support has on our community and showcases the cultural fabric of Destin to those who come to visit.
Making the Art Festival a reality is a year-long commitment. With respect and admiration we salute our many community partners, members, donors, advertisers, MKAF Board of Directors, sponsors, volunteers and festival-goers. We are proud to be part of this important cultural event to its many attendees.
We hope you enjoy the Festival of the Arts and all that it encompasses. So thank you again and keep supporting the Arts!

ARTIST KELLY PIERRE2019 FESTIVAL POSTER CONTEST WINNER
A panel of judges selected Kelly Pierre as the 2019 Festival of the Arts poster contest winner. Pierre’s winning design becomes the official centerpiece featured prominently through the festival campaign including gracing the cover of the 2019 Festival Guide, commemorative festival poster, postcard, t-shirts and other souvenirs.
Born and raised in Southern Louisiana, Kelly Pierre’s passion for arts sparked at a young age. As a child, Pierre spent a lot of his time sketching marine life from the deck of his family’s shrimping boat. He uses multiple mediums, oils, acrylics, clay, wood, and metal because Pierre believes that working with just one media is restrictive to his artistic process and
prefers to allow each idea to manifest on its own. Pierre’s studio is located on the HarborWalk Village in Destin where he finds inspiration in the wildlife and beauty of the local Gulf.
“People come here from everywhere, they come here for the water and it is what attracts everybody. The beautiful sand and the water. I think the vibe here is awesome and they want to take that home with them. “
- Kelly Pierre, 2019 Poster Content Winner, Festival of the Arts
Festival attendees are invited to view Pierre’s winning art at the MKAF Souvenir Tent where the original artwork will be available for purchase. Please visit Pierre in Booth # and visit him in Booth #85.

“There’s a universal appeal to George Rodrigue’s art that gets inside one’s soul. You don’t just see it —you FEEL it.”
Join award-winning public speaker, author, and art historian, Wendy Rodrigue, in an exclusive special exhibit honoring the work of George Rodrigue (1944-2013). A native of Fort Walton Beach, Wendy’s life’s work, since 1991, has been to share her late husband’s life and art in as quality and broad a manner as possible. George and Wendy partnered on the development of all aspects of his career and life, including his galleries, museum exhibitions, a dozen books published both nationally and internationally on his art, and extensive education outreach. Wendy now continues this tradition with Life & Legacy, honoring one of America’s most important artists, George Rodrigue.
This outreach program explores the evolution of Rodrigue’s work and the processes behind it. Each piece tells a story — a reaction to current events, a state of mind, the past, the present, the future, or love. Within each piece can be found common elements — the distinctive Rodrigue Oak, the Cajun people, their culture glowing from within, the Blue Dog, staring straight at the viewer, asking the questions, “Why are we here?” “What does it all mean?” There are swirls, flowers, suns, butterflies, and even hurricanes.
Inspiring individuals of all ages and backgrounds with the life and art of George Rodrigue, the Life & Legacy program expands upon his vision by showing how one person can overcome obstacles to achieve their dreams, while also making a positive difference in the world —in
this case, through the transformative potential of art. Projects include museum exhibitions, education initiatives, an ongoing public lecture series, and written and online publications.
Since founding the Life & Legacy Tour in 2017, Wendy Rodrigue has visited more than 80 schools and exposed, personally, Rodrigue’s life and art to more than 35,000 students and teachers throughout Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida, California, Texas and Mississippi. In
addition, her lectures at museums, universities, and community groups remain standing room only, as she shares personal stories and original paintings from her late husband’s private collection.
George and Wendy enjoyed a long partnership with MKAF. Together they brought unique art experiences to many Florida Panhandle schools ---a form of outreach that Wendy continues today. MKAF is pleased to bring this special Life & Legacy programming with Wendy Rodrigue to schools in Okaloosa and Walton counties this fall.
In addition to being headquartered with original George Rodrigue paintings in the Special Exhibit space on the first row of the festival grounds, Wendy will be making special appearances at the ArtStop, serving up storytelling for kids of all ages!
“Sixty years later I still paint the way I felt as a child. I emphasize to students how important it is to retain that innocence, and that it’s okay to create art in this way.” ~George Rodrigue

2019 Festival of the Arts | 1514 | Festival of the Arts 2019
Since 1995, Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) has inspired over 330,000 people in over 70 schools/agencies all across the Okaloosa and Walton county area. MKAF offers an array of programs including Arts for All Abilities, Arts Empower, and Warrior Arts, thanks to grants and private/corporate gifts. A portion of MKAF signature event profits from the Concerts in the Village and Festival of the Arts helps to fund the Foundation’s community outreach initiatives to serve the unique needs of those populations who lack access to the arts and benefit from these creative and interactive experiences.
Key Features
Arts for All Abilities is a program committed to helping people with disabilities learn a variety of art programs. Led by nationally recognized educators, facilitators, and artists known for their groundbreaking work, participants are given the opportunity to learn painting, drawing, music, magic, and more.
Arts Empower, led by accomplished art specialists, serves K-12 students, at-risk youth, and people with special needs. The program emphasizes Arts-Integration, an educational teaching method that integrates visual and performing arts as pathways to learning key subject areas. Research shows that at-risk students exposed to the arts have better academic results and workplace opportunities. Students learn theater, music, poetry, and more.
Warrior Arts provides therapeutic art classes for veterans/active duty military in order to heal both visible and invisible injuries. Warrior Arts’ signature program is the Zentangle art method, a drawing activity that increases focus and creativity, while alleviating stress and anxiety.
Contact MKAF for information on how you or your business can be an art advocate for Community Outreach programs.

2019 Festival of the Arts | 2524 | Festival of the Arts 2019
MEET THE JUDGESMattie Codling is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA) in Ocean Springs, MS. She has been a part of the WAMA staff since April 2016. Codling is responsible for exhibition research, development, and installation, as well as the care and promotion of the Museum’s permanent collection.
Codling completed her undergraduate work at The University of Mississippi where she double majored in Art History and Anthropology. She received her Master’s degree in Art History from Florida State University with a specialization in Museum Studies.
Codling specializes in Southern art, architecture, and the material culture of the African Diaspora. She has participated in several archaeological digs, including the Carson Burial Mounds located outside of Clarksdale, MS. Codling has also completed several field studies of African Diasporic cemeteries in the Southeast.
Contemporary art and the exploration of modernity through alternative media are particularly intriguing for Codling. She has participated in numerous exhibitions of contemporary art and enjoys being introduced to new artists’ work that challenges viewers. A Southerner by birth, Codling is drawn to artwork that pulls from the region’s rich legacy yet confronts it through new means of interpretation. “The state of Southern art is changing,” states Codling, “it is exciting to be a part of this creative surge that is deeply rooted in our culture.”
Codling has worked in the museum field for eight years. Her passion lies in uncovering the past through contemporary modes of exposition. Her present work revolves around the art and legacy of American master, Walter Inglis Anderson.
Darlene earned a Masters of Architecture from the University of Florida and went on to practice architecture and lighting design in Europe, California and New York. She has been published in Architecture California and enjoyed teaching sabbaticals on both coasts.
Darlene has been with Thomasville Center for the Arts for ten years in several roles and currently serves as Director of Public Art +, Exhibitions. Major accomplishments include: the creation and execution of FLAUNT, an impactful, pop-up style, public art immersion in downtown Thomasville – a community favorite for seven years straight; the design of Art In the Open and Art with Others, two public art programs focused on art exposure in innovative places and with creative partnerships; and a current partnership with the City of Thomasville to create a public art map and corresponding art walk, which includes the UnVacant Lot project, designed and implemented as part of a destination.
