Here’s the whole story.

OXIDATION OF SECONDARY ALCOHOLS

Under mild conditions ketones having the same number of carbon atoms as the original alcohol are formedformed.

This is what we already know, however,

OXIDATION OF SECONDARY ALCOHOLS

further oxidation under severe conditions leads to the formation of acids or a mixture of acids with fewer carbon atoms than the original alcoholfewer carbon atoms than the original alcohol.

One less thing to learn when you’re doing that chemistry degree!y g

OXIDATION OF SECONDARY ALCOHOLS

During oxidation of a ketone, POPOV’s RULE is followed.

Thi t t th t th b l l iThis states that the carbonyl group always remains attached to the smaller alkyl group while the other is removed and oxidized.

OXIDATION OF TERTIARY ALCOHOLS

These are oxidized with great difficulty, but under severe conditions, they give ketones,

and then carboxylic acids, both with fewer carbon atoms than the original alcohol.

Not many CAPE students know this.Compiled By Denison At Global In Cunupia. 739‐2656.

can be oxidized and you are asked to give the products.p
