DESCRIPTION

ABOUT TRUTHSQUADSeparate fact from fiction with Truthsquad, the upcoming "pro-am" fact-checking service from NewsTrust and the Center for Public Integrity.Truthsquad aims to revolutionize the field of fact checking by combining the best practices of crowdsourcing with the knowledge of a large nonprofit newsroom and the reach of major online news partners. This new initiative empowers citizens to collaborate with journalists to fact-check controversial claims from politicians and newsmakers. Participants are invited to post questionable claims online, research factual evidence supporting or opposing these claims, and verify their accuracy as a community, with professional oversight. NewsTrust and The Center for Public Integrity / iWatch News have now partnered to develop Truthsquad.com, which we aim to launch as a daily service by early 2012. Our goal is to create a one-stop destination for fact-checked information -- featuring our own findings, as well as promoting the work of other trusted research organizations like FactCheck.org, PolitiFact and the Washington Post. Our advisors include Brooks Jackson, Craig Newmark, Dan Gillmor, Ellen Miller, Jay Rosen and Jeff Jarvis, with more advisors and partners to be announced in coming weeks. To learn more about our next steps, read the recent articles in The Atlantic and Nieman Journalism Lab.NewsTrust launched its first pilot site for Truthsquad in August 2010, with funding from Omidyar Network and contributions from the Poynter Institute, MediaBugs and other partners and advisors. Reports on these first pilots are posted on PBS MediaShift and on the NewsTrust blog. For more info, visit the Truthsquad pilot site and sign up, so we can inform you when our new service launches in coming months.http://truthsquad.com

Pilot Takeways

Here are our key takeaways from our Truthsquad pilots so far:

• A game-like experience makes fact-checking more engaging.

• A “pro-am” collaboration delivers more reliable results.

• Crowd contributions are limited, requiring oversight and rewards.

• Truthsquad fills a gap between journalism and social media.
