Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of August 13/14, 2016

In today’s second reading, we hear the author of the letter to the Hebrews liken

the daily life of the Christian steward to a race, a long-distance race perhaps, certainly

not a sprint; requiring endurance and a single-minded focus on Jesus at the finish line.

Good stewards are firmly committed to running the race, to live the Christian life to the

fullest, to keep their eyes focused on Jesus. They don’t grow weary. They don’t lose

heart. They know there is immense joy waiting for them at the finish line. Are you fully

committed to living each day for Christ? Are you running the race, or are you simply

jogging? Just walking? Sitting? Going backwards? Going nowhere? Some of us may

want to reflect on what we can do to run the race with even more conviction. Others

may want to reflect on how to simply enter the race and start running.

UPCOMING EVENTS Special Mass and Healing Service:

All are invited to join us on Wed., August 17 at 7pm. Frank Kelly, who has been blessed with many apostolic gifts, including the Gift of Heal-ing, will share with us at the service.

Monthly Mass and Healing Service:

All are welcome to attend our monthly Mass and Healing Service on Monday, August 22, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Parish School of Religion: Classes begin on Tues., Sept. 6 at 6:15 pm in the auditorium. To Register, please pick up a registration form from the In-formation table in the rear of the church. Bring the completed form with the $30 fee to the first class. Contact Joyce at 482-3984 for information.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation): Adults interested in becoming Catholic or if you need to complete the Sacraments, please join our RCIA program which begins Septem-ber 11 at 9:30 am in the Priory . For details, please email Sandy: [email protected].

Sisters of the Holy Family: You are invited to attend the Gala which will benefit the Retirement Fund & Ministries of the Sisters of the Holy Fam-ily at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Au-gust 21. Call 241-3088 for details.

On August 15 we celebrate the Feast of the

Assumption; the day we recall Our

Blessed Mother being assumed into heav-

en and crowned queen. In the Gospel read-

ing on this day we hear proclaimed once

again the Canticle of Mary, recorded in the

Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). It is the Virgin

Mary’s song of joy in response to her

cousin Elizabeth’s greeting (Luke 1:41-

45), and summarizes Mary’s deep faith

and trust in God. This joyous song is also

known as the Magnificat, from the open-

ing line of scripture’s Latin translation

which means “My soul magnifies the

Lord” (“Magnificat anima mea Domi-

num”). The Magnificat is a beautiful stew-

ardship prayer used by the Church every

day since the fifth century. It is a hymn at

Evening Prayer in the Liturgy of the

Hours. The Cathecism of the Catholic

Church teaches us that the Magnificat: …

is the song both of the Mother of God and

of the Church; the song of the Daughter of

Zion and of the new People of God; the

song of thanksgiving for the fullness of

graces poured out in the economy of salva-

tion and the song of the “poor” whose

hope is met by the fulfillment… (#2619).

Among the many stewardship themes in

this reading, the prayer helps us realize that

God’s stewardship plan turns the world’s

values upside down. God comes to the aid

of the poor and lowly, to the detriment of

the rich and powerful. And for those who

entrust their lives to the Lord, they are

filled with good things. As a young wom-

an, humble and poor, Mary becomes an

interpreter of God’s plan of salvation, she

reveals to us the fundamentals of good

stewardship, and she becomes a prophetic

witness to social justice for all future gen-

erations who “will call me blessed” (Luke

1:48). Mary was the first disciple, the first

Christian steward of God’s plan. Take a

few moments and pray this stewardship

prayer. Consider its

implications for

your life. How do

you magnify the

Lord? How do you

make God “bigger”

in your day-to-day

world? How do you

bring God’s com-

passion to the poor?

XX Domingo Ordinario ~ 14 de Augusto de 2016 ~ 20th Sunday of Ordinary Time

generaciones futuras, quienes “me

What does the Catechism of the Catholic Church say?

Paragraph 1719:

The Beatitudes reveal the goal of human existence, the

ultimate end of human acts: God calls us to his own

beatitude. This vocation is addressed to each individual

personally, but also to the Church as a whole, the new

people made up of those who have accepted the promise

and live from it in faith.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Our Mission Statement

The mission of Saint Anthony of Padua Parish is to develop an atmosphere for the members

of our Faith Community to live out the four-fold goals of the Catholic Church:

Worship, Word, Service, & Community.

Legion of Mary

Meetings are Saturdays 10-11am in the conference room.

All welcomed. The Legion of Mary is a lay

Apostolic association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the

Church and under the powerful leadership of

Mary Immaculate, serve the Church and their

neighbor on a voluntary basis.

Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, our great High

Priest, Hear my

humble prayers on

behalf of your priest,

Father [N]. Give him a

deep faith, a bright and

firm hope and a

burning love

which will ever

increase in the course of

his priestly life. In his

loneliness, comfort him

in his sorrows,

strengthen him in his

frustrations, point out to

him that it is through

suffering that the soul is

purified, and show him

that he is needed by the

Church, he is needed by

souls, he is needed for

the work of

redemption. O loving

Mother Mary, Mother

of Priests, take to your

heart your son who is

close to you because of

his priestly ordination,

and because of the

power which he has

received to carry on the

work of Christ in a

world which needs him

so much. Be his

comfort, be his joy, be

his strength, and

especially help him to

live and to defend the

ideals of consecrated

celibacy. Amen.

The Canticle of Mary

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in

God my savior. For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;

behold, from now on all ages will call me blessed. The mighty one

has done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is

from age to age to those who fear him. He has shown might with his

arm, dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart. He has thrown down

the rulers from their thrones but lifted up the lowly. The hungry he

has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty. He has

helped Israel his servant, remembering his mercy, according to his

promise to our fathers, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: as it

was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

Amen. See Luke 1:46-55

Derribó a

Amen. Ver Lucas 1:46-55
