Family of the MonthArlene Tomecek

Arlene Tomecek, also known as “Ar”. Arlene was born in Johnson City, New York and is of Czechoslovakian descent and has been a resident of Hanover for 53 years. She and her late husband, Jerry, were married 67 years. Together they have three daughters and one son. The

family continued to grow as their children married spouses. Then came the 13 grandchildren followed by 12 great grandchildren and there are still more to come.

Raising their children kept Arlene and Jerry busy. They enjoyed spending time with the family vacationing and hosting holiday dinners. As grandparents they attended Grandparents’ Day and were spectators at band competitions, fishing derbies, spelling bees, dance recitals, ball games, go-cart races, just to name a few.

Arlene had many hobbies including playing cards, sewing, knitting, reading novels and shopping. When they purchased a computer, she attended classes to become more proficient. She knitted many lap blankets for the elderly and caps for preemies. Also, Arlene volunteered on committees for Parkview Homeowners Association and at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center.

Upon retirement, Arlene and Jerry enjoyed traveling with their trailer visiting most of the US. They looked forward to weekend getaways in Gettysburg, then they had a calling to drive to Alaska with their truck and camper. They enjoyed trips by plane and cruises. A few years later they decided to slow down and became “snow birds”. In the winter months they were in Florida then back to Pennsylvania for summer. It was in Florida that Arlene was on a bowling league and learned to play shuffle board. Although they maintained many friendships in Florida, Christmas was always spent in Hanover.

As her family we are proud to tell her story; a stroke in 2011 took away her means to communicate.

I am very happy to be chosen Cottage Star of the Month. I have worked at the Cottage for 8 years. I am a coordinator and Med-Tech. I love listening to the stories of the residents. They share with me stories of where they worked, about their family and what it was like growing up in their time. I have a great joy each day knowing that I

have given 100% to make a difference in our residents daily living. Seeing the smile on their face puts a smile on mine. The residents and staff have become part of my family. I thank God every day, I work with such compassionate and loving staff for our residents. We are happy to have Debbie as part of our Cottage Family!

Ice Cream Party & Hula Hoop ContestWhat a fun time... The residents and staff decided to break out into a spontaneous Ice Cream party and Hula Hoop contest on a Sunday Evening. The residents and staff tried their luck at twirling the Hula Hoop. The residents loved to watch the staff get silly and some even joined the fun. You never know what kind of funny things these guys are going to do.

As a child, do you remember the joy you felt when you tried something new and accomplished it for the first time? Whether it was something as simple as learning to snap your fingers or as complex as riding a bicycle, the joy and satisfaction felt in first-time victories were unsurpassed.

Have you felt that thrill of discovery lately or have you packed your life full of the familiar and the routine? Trying something new like joining a scrapbooking club or playing tennis can reenergize your life and reveal an aspect of God’s unique purpose for you.

A weeklong celebration kicks off Sunday, September 9, and Columbia Cottage is joining thousands of assisted living communities across the country for the festivities. National Assisted Living Week® continues through Saturday, September 15, and Columbia Cottage is honoring this year’s theme, “Capture the Moment.”

“Often, it’s the little, everyday moments in assisted living between staff and residents that deepen bonds, enrich lives and improve care,” said Christine Horn, Vice President of Operations for Horst Senior Care. “Our community’s seniors are unique individuals who still have so much to give, and we are honored to serve them during this pivotal time in their lives.”

“Capture the Moment” hopes to inspire assisted living residents to enjoy the present while still celebrating the past. Many adults 65 and older battle isolation and loneliness as they age, which can impact their mental, emotional and physical health. Community engagement may be the key to combatting this issue, and Columbia Cottage offers life-enriching social activities to help residents continue to lead fulfilling lives.
