Bring a friend or come by yourselfand make new friends. People of all ages and abilities arewelcome at The Dale. And, may you find unexpected joy inyour journey!

It is the time of year where the weather is changeable andoften inclement. If the weather forecast is severe, we mayneed to close the Dale Association for our members’ andstaff’s safety. If the Dale closes due to weather, we will noti-fy television channels 2, 4, 7 and 1340-WLVL radio. Pleasewatch or listen for important information.

Here are a few winter weather safety tips: Parking Lot Safety: When walking in a parking lot, stay tothe sides of the aisle and watch for cars. Make eye contactwith an approaching driver and stop walking if you don’tthink the driver has seen you! Use all your senses and do nottalk on the phone or use headphones while walking in a park-ing lot. Snow can muffle sound of an approaching vehicle. Before you exit a parking space, adjust seat, mirrors etc. and

check your surroundings for pedestrians. Don’t cut acrossparking space lines or park near drifts.

Avoid Slipping on Ice: Wear shoes with good traction andnon-skid soles, and stay inside until the roads are clear.Replace a worn cane tip to make walking easier. Take offshoes as soon as you return indoors because often snow andice attach to the soles and, once melted, can lead to slipperyconditions inside.

Walk like a Penguin on Slippery Surfaces! When things get cold and icy, and your path looks kind ofdicey - Waddle on! Keep your toes all pointed out-y, keepyour knees all loosey-goosey - Waddle on!Keep your hands outside your pockets, takeshort steps so you won’t rocket - Waddle on!Take it slowly, holy-moly, so you won’t falldown and roll-y - Waddle on!

Hope you find this cute poem helpful when walking on slip-pery surfaces.

I hope you make visiting the Centre part of your routine toenjoy friendship, wellness, and warmth. Have a safe winter

Vision problems do interfere with reading and learning.Following is a list of some of the more common symp-toms:

• Doesn’t like to read• Skips or rereads lines• Prefers to be read to• Loss of place when reading• Trouble seeing the board

If your child is struggling with any of the above, sched-ule an appointment today with Elizabeth Hetrick, OD,Developmental Optometry at Davison Road Optical,500 Davison Road in Lockport. Call 434-8063. Pleasehelp us spread the word and share this with your friendsand family.

Does your child struggle with reading or schoolwork?

Even if you have been told your child’s eyes are fine, your child could still have an eye coordination or eyemovement problem interfering with reading andschoolwork.

• One out of four children struggle with reading andlearning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

• It is estimated that over 60% of problem learners haveundiagnosed vision problems.

• The majority of the vision problems that interfere withreading and learning are very treatable.

• Seeing clearly (“20/20”) is just one of 17 visual skillscritical to academic success.

• Children with Individualized Education Plans (IEP)have a significantly higher prevalence of vision prob-lems than non-IEP students. Many of these vision prob-lems would not be detected by vision screenings basedon visual acuity alone.

The American Federation of Teachers acknowledgesthe vital role that vision plays in our children’s educa-tion and that:

“Even the most gifted students will struggle academi-cally if they have trouble seeing the board or focusingon a book. A tremendous amount of learning happensvisually, so proper vision care is crucial to helping stu-dents reach their full potential.”
