The TS 1 assembly conveyor is part ofthe larger family of TS (Transfer Systems)from Bosch Rexroth which includeTSplus and TS4plus. Like all TS prod-ucts, the TS 1 is a workpiece pallet-based, non-synchronous, conveyordesigned to improve manufacturingproductivity and product quality whileallowing for maximum assembly flexibility. With your choice of three different palletsizes, and a range of positioning andtransfer modules, TS 1 is a precisionassembly conveyor that's ideal for smallproducts or subassemblies.
TS 1 flexibility: easy to specifyand useAll TS 1 components are pre-engineeredand modular. That means you can mix oradd accessory modules as required. Thesystem can easily be expanded, reconfigured or relocated as your needschange. You can phase in your invest-ment as time and budget permit. Startwith a simple conveyor for basic assem-bly and grow into a fully automated, progressive assembly system. Asproduction requirements change, TS 1gives you the flexibility to add manual orautomatic workstations.
Modularity also simplifies system designand assembly. As a result, you can bemore responsive to changing marketdemands. Installation and maintenanceare also simple—further reducing up-frontas well as ongoing costs.
The workpiece pallet—heart of the TS 1 conveyorTS 1 conveyors transport parts onworkpiece pallets. The workpiece pallets(three sizes, from 80 x 80 mm to 160 x160 mm) ride on the conveyor transportbelts. This transport method has manyadvantages for product assemblyapplications, including:
TS 1 - The choice for small products, or small spaces
Positioning. Pallets can be positioned atworkstations to ± 0.015 mm (.0006")when used with a Rexroth Lift-PositionUnit, permitting precision assemblyoperations.
Mounting. Pallets can be tooled withfixtures to secure parts for manual orautomated operations. Identification anddata carrying devices (used to coordinateassembly sequences, identify modeltypes, etc.) are also commonly mountedto pallets.
Stopping. Pallets can be stopped on theleading or trailing edge—regardless ofpallet orientation on the conveyor. Palletscan also be accumulated in queue andreleased one at a time.
Sensing. Exciter plates on the palletbottom and sides work with conveyor-mounted proximity switches to sensepallet presence.
The workpiece pallet can be accessedfrom all sides—allowing maximumflexibility in automated or manualworkstation placement around theconveyor.

A rectangular configuration consists oftwo straight parallel conveyor lines anduses drives, returns and lift-transfer units. The two parallel lines are connected atthe ends by BS 1 transverse conveyors.Rectangular configurations are commonlyused in larger systems, where manydifferent operations must be performedduring the assembly process. As analternative, KE1/90 or KU1/90 curve unitscan be used to configure a rectangularline in which the workpiece pallet needsto maintain leading edge orientation.
Rectangular
With TS 1, you have the freedom toselect the configuration best suited toyour layout and production requirements.Rectangular, parallel, in-line, systemsusing KE1 or KU1 curve units tomaintain pallet orientation and serpentinesystems are all possible with TS 1.Space constraints and process complex-ity often dictate which configuration(s)will work best.
Choose the TS 1 configurationthat best suits your applicationor facility
A parallel configuration, while similar to arectangular system, uses tandem lifttransfer units or curve units to connectthe conveyor sections.
Serpentine conveyors uses multipledrives and returns, straight conveyorsections and KE1/90 or KU1/90 curvesall connected together by transverseconveyors. Serpentine lines adapt tospace or production requirements whichoften dictate the need for an unusuallayout.
These are just some of the possibilitieswith TS 1 pre-engineered conveyors. Nomatter what the assembly requirement,Rexroth modular components makemanufacturing truly flexible.

Further tailor your system tomatch specific assemblyrequirementsWith TS 1 assembly conveyors, work-piece pallets can be selectively routed tooff-line manual or automated stations. These “cycle-independent stations” allowyou to accommodate fluctuating produc-tion quantities and to balance cycle timesbetween workstations. This, in turn, permits manual and automated worksta-tions to be combined on the same line.
Cycle-independent stations are con-structed using standardized modules andtherefore are easily added to the mainconveyor.
Applications for TS 1The TS 1 system can be used in precisionassembly and testing applications with atotal pallet payload up to 3.0 kg (6.6 lbs). This makes it excellent for use in theassembly of small automotive andelectronic components.
Typical types of products that can beassembled using TS 1 include:
• Automotive components• Ink-jet Cartridges• Hard drives• Small subassemblies• Electronics• Medical Devices

Assembled Workpiece Pallets
TS1 workpiece pallets are available inthree standard sizes and three differentversions to perfectly match eachapplication. Each pallet is equipped withreplaceable wear strips for prolongedpallet life. Exciter flags on the bottomsurface are used for pallet detectionwhen using vertically mounted proximityswitches. Optional exciter blocks may beadded to the top of the pallets if proximitysensing from the side is required. Up tofour exciter blocks may be mounted onthe pallet. Urethane accumulationbumpers may also be added to the WT1/K and WT1/S pallets by sliding them inthe preformed dovetail slots. Pallets usethe traditional Rexroth stop tunneltechnology which permit pallets to bestopped on either the leading or trailingedge, allowing a single stop gate tosingularize a line of accumulated pallets. All pallets have two adjacent sidesequipped with tapered positioningbushings, and the two opposing sideshave locating grooves which engageeither the PE1 or PE1/P positioningmodule, depending on pallet style.

The WT1/K workpiece pallet is moldedof PA66 nylon. It is suitable for use withall TS1 transport and positioningmodules except for the HP1 Lift PositionUnit. This economical version of thepallet is ideal to transport product whenlimited station repeatability is required. Each pallet comes with the wear stripsand bottom exciter plates installed.Optional urethane accumulationbumpers and/or exciter blocks may beadded by the user. The small arrow in thelower left hand corner is the referencecorner for dimensioning and subsequentmachining if necessary. Four holes areprovided to allow easy attachment ofpart fixtures or tooling.
The WT1/S workpiece pallet has a 5mmthick steel plate permanently molded intoa PA66 nylon base. It incorporates all of
the features of the WT1/K pallet with theadded benefit of a solid steel surface formounting part fixtures or tooling. Thispallet cannot be used with the HP1 LiftPosition Unit, but does provide improvedrepeatability with the PE1 PositioningModule.
The WT1/P is constructed of an alumi-num frame, UHMW-PE nylon wear strips, and also includes four positioningbushings. This pallet provides themaximum possible repeatability with bothPE1/P and HP1 positioning modules.
The table below lists the empty palletweight and maximum total weight, including payload. For repeatability datawith the PE1, PE1/P and HP1. Pleaserefer to pages 7-1 and 7-2 respectively.

Electrically conductive, GT1 belt is usedto transport the workpiece pallets. Innormal operation, the belts run continu-ously, carrying the pallets on theirsurface. The low coefficient of frictionbetween the belt and pallet allows palletsto be stopped and accumulate on theconveyor while the belts continue to run.
Transport belt is available in 50 meterrolls or pre-cut to any desired length in 1mm increments up to 50 meters.
When installing or replacing belts, theymust be tensioned and welded to createa continuous loop in each conveyorsection. Tensioning ensures properpositive contact with the drive pulleys.Use the belt welding kit on page 3-7 totension, grind and weld the belt ends.

Accumulation Control for KU 1/ Curves
The outer guide of the KU1/90 and KU1/180 curve units has been designed towithstand pallet accumulation pressureand allow the curve modules to operatein accumulation mode. The accumulationpressure in a curve can easily bereduced with the addition of an accumu-lation control stop gate as shown inFigure 5-1.
The accumulation stop gate is pneumati-cally operated and requires no additionalcontrol. It uses a WI1/M Rocker Stop, apneumatic cylinder switch, and a VE1stop gate (Figure 5-2). All of thecomponents required to build theaccumulation control stop gate can befound in Section 8 of this catalog.

Lift-Transfer Unit
The HQ1/U Lift Transfer Unit is used totransfer pallets perpendicularly off theconveyor. It is used primarily at cornersand intersections
The HQ1/U lift plate is powered up anddown by a single lift pneumatic cylinder. In the center or resting position the beltson the unit are located 2.2 mm below thenominal conveyor transport height (ortransport surface). In the raised positionthe HQ1/U is lifted 4.4 mm above thetransport surface.
For pass through applications, the HQ1/Uis lowered 8.6 mm below the transportsurface.
The HQ1/U is completely reversibleenabling pallet diversion in two directionsfrom a single transfer point.
The HQ1/U can be mounted to a BS1transverse conveyor as well as thestandard ST1 conveyor section.
Each LTU is equipped with steel sideguides to guide the pallets duringtransfer. Each guide may be raised upslightly to act as a pallet stop when thetransfer is in the centered, or rest, position. Optional cushioned transferstops (see page 8-4) may be mounted tothe side guides to provide adjustablecushioned stops instead of hard stops onthe transfer.

Tandem Lift-Transfer Unit
The EQ1/TR Tandem Lift Transfer Unittransfers pallets perpendicularly betweenclosely spaced parallel conveyor sectionsusing three lift-transfer units and one drivemotor.
A PLC is required to control traffic andaccumulation of pallets on the EQ1/TR isnot permitted. Proximity switch installationis required to detect pallet present andpallet passed.
The center section of the EQ1/TR is fixedin place at the transfer height, 2 mmabove the main line belts. The two outersections are normally at rest 2.2 mmbelow the main line belts. Each sectioncan be individually actuated, via aircylinders to raise 4.4 mm and transfer thepallet, or lower 8.6 mm and allow a palletto pass through. EQ1/TR transfers can bemounted to ST1 main line belt sections,or a BS1 transverse conveyor. Thismodule is completely reversible to allowbi-directional travel.
Each outer section is equipped with steelside guides to guide the pallets duringtransfer. Each guide may be raised upslightly to act as a pallet stop when thetransfer section is in the center, or restposition. Optional cushioned transferstops (see page 8-4) may be mounted tothe side guides to provide adjustablecushioned stops instead of hard stops onthe transfer.

Tandem Lift-Transverse Conveyor
The EQ1/T Tandem Lift Transfer Unittransfers pallets perpendicularly betweenrectangular conveyor sections using twolift-transfer units, one BS1/T transverseconveyor and one drive motor.
The EQ1/T Tandem Transfer Modulecombines the functionality of two lifttransfer units and a BS1/T transverseconveyor all powered from a single drivemotor. Each EQ1/T includes all requiredmounting hardware as well as thefollowing components.
• 2 Lift Transfer Units• 1 BS1/T Transverse Conveyor• 2 Drive connection kits• 2 Protective guards
The BS1/T is used to power the twoslave driven lift transfer units. Each Lift-Transfer may be operated independentlyby energizing the pneumatic cylinderswith separate valves. The transfer unitsare normally at rest 2.2 mm below themain line belt height. When energized up,the transfer raises 4.4 mm to the sameheight as the BS1/T transverse belts andthe pallet is transferred. When energizeddown, the transfer lowers 8.6 mm, andthe pallets are allowed to pass throughon the main line. The EQ1/T tandemtransfer module is completely reversible, although the allowable payload isreduced to 15 Kg in reverse operation.
Side guides on each of the transfer unitsmay be positioned slightly higher to stopa pallet when the transfer is in the centeror rest position. Optional cushionedtransfer stops (page 8-4) may be addedto provide gentle stopping on thetransfer.

The BS1/T is used to power the slavedriven lift transfer unit. The transfer unit isnormally at rest 2.2 mm below the mainline belt height. When energized up, thetransfer rises 4.4 mm to the same heightas the BS1/T transverse conveyor beltsand the pallet is transferred. Whenenergized down, the transfer lowers 8.6mm, and the pallets are allowed to passthrough on the main line. The EQ1/TEtandem transfer module is completelyreversible, although the allowablepayload is reduce to 15 kg in reverseoperation.
Side guides on the transfer unit may bepositioned slightly higher to stop a palletwhen the transfer is in the center or restposition. Optional cushioned transferstop (page 8-4) may be added to providegentle stopping on the transfer.

Positioning Unit
The PE1/P positioning unit providesrepeatability up to + 0.03mm (.001”) witha WT1/S steel workpiece pallet and+ 0.015mm (.006”) with a WT1/P alu-minum workpiece pallet. The PE1/P uses aside locating pin to engage a locating holeon the workpiece pallet frame. It can beused at automatic or manual workstations.
Depending on pallet type, two differentversions are available. One version is de-signed specifically for use with the WT1/Kand WT1/S workpiece pallets. The secondversion is designed to conform to the fea-tures of WT1/P aluminum workpiece pallet.
The positioning units mount directly to the T-slots in the bottom of the conveyor profile orto the table top of an automatic workstation.
The PE1/P unit is delivered partiallyassembled and includes the positioningunit, a proximity switch for queuingposition, mounting hardware, pneumaticfittings and 2 or 3 proximity switch holders(depending on pallet size). Two VE1Stops (pg. 8-1) are recommended foreach PE1. One is used as a pre-stop andthe other for a PE1/P stop.
NOTE: The positioning repeatability of thePE1/P does not account for workpiecepallet plate flatness. Please refer to Section2 for plate flatness tolerances.

The WI/M mini rocker stop provides aneconomical method of workpiece palletdetection and can be used (in conjunc-tion with other components) to createan accumulation control kit.
When used for pallet detection, a 12mmbody proximity switch is required(ordered separately). The switch isactivated when a workpiece palletpasses in front of the rocker. In thisconfiguration, the WI/M has a monitor-ing area of 44 mm.NOTE: Refer to the TSplus catalog for12mm body proximity switches andcables.
The WI/M can also be combined with anoptional pneumatic cylinder switch. Inthis configuration, the actuation, which iscaused by a pallet passing by a WI/M, isconverted into a pneumatic signal. Thepneumatic accumulation control kit(shown below) can be constructedusing of a VE1 stop gate.
How it works: When the rocker is inthe rest position, air is directed to a stopgate and pallets freely pass through. When the rocker is actuated by a pallet, the air is disabled and the stop gatebegins queuing pallets.

Conveyor widthConveyor width is determined by the sizeof the workpiece pallet. Maximum payloaddepends on the length of the load-bearingedge (LWT or BWT) of the workpiece pallet.Maximum permissible loading for the loadbearing edge is shown in Figure 10-1
Maximum permissible workpiece palletpayload (includes pallet, fixturing, workpiece and coding system) dependson the supported length of the pallet asshown in Figure 10-2.
Never exceed the maximum load perpallet or per drive unit. The load ismaximum when pallets are in queue asshown in Figure 10-3.
Transportation speedPreferred speed is 12 m/min on conveyorsections and transfers. Performance datafor individual modules is based on thesespeeds, although different speeds can beselected. Transportation speed isselected based on system cycle time, time required by the workpiece pallet toenter a workstation, total weight of thepallet, and stability of the workpiece onthe pallet.

Materials usedThe materials used in the componentsare primarily:
– Non-rusting steel or steel protected against corrosion by a special surface
– Brass– Cast or malleable aluminum alloy– Polyurethane, polyamide, some with additives to improve electrical and mechanical characteristics and UHMW polyethylene
– NBR or Viton for elastic seals
Media ResistantResistant to many common media usedin production such as water, mineral oil, grease, and detergents. Contact yourRexroth representative if you have anydoubts about resistance to specificchemicals, e.g. test oil, doped oils, aggressive detergents, solvents, orbrake fluid. Avoid long-term contact withacidic or basic reacting materials.
ContaminationWear may increase dramatically if thesystem is contaminated due toenvironmental factors, particularly withabrasive media such as sand andsilicates, but also due to processesrunning on the transfer system (e.g.welding beads, pumice dust, glassshards, shavings, or lost parts…). Insuch cases, maintenance intervals mustbe substantially shorted.

Functional reliabilityResistance to media and contaminationdoes not mean that functional reliabilityis guaranteed in every case.
– Liquids that thicken on evaporationand are highly viscous or adhesive(sticky) could lead to a disruption infunction
– Media with lubricating properties may reduce the driving power that is caused by friction if they are transported on systems with belts or round belts
– The chain lubricant used on con- veyor chains can be washed away with solvents or detergents
Such cases require special attentionwhen planning the system and adjustingthe maintenance intervals.
Environmental sustainability, recyclingThe materials used are environmentallysustainable and may be recycled orreused (if need be, by converting orreplacing components). Recyclability isensured by the selection of material andthe possibility to take the componentsapart.
Pneumatic connection dataOiled or non-oiled, filtered, drycompressed airOperating pressure 4 to 6 barPerformance data is for an operatingpressure of 5 bar.
MaintenanceThe TS components require very littlemaintenance. If maintenance-freeoperation is not feasible at economiccosts, maintenance instructions areincluded in the operating manual.
WearWith individual components, wear iscaused by the basic principle and cannotbe avoided. Constructive measures andselection of the proper material will helpfunctional reliability last for the entireservice life. However, wear depends onthe operating, maintenance, and ambientconditions of the system and thelocation (resistance, contamination).
Measures to reduce wearThe following measures reduce wear andthe friction caused by it:
– Switch off conveyor sections when the system is not running, e.g. during breaks, overnight, on the weekend.
– Only select speeds that correspond to the particular function.
– Minimize the weight of the workpiece pallet — do not overload with material during pickup.
– Avoid unnecessary accumulation section, e.g. by reducing the number of workpiece pallets
– Switch off accumulation sections with heavy workpiece pallet loads if transport is not necessary
– Especially Important: Avoid conta- mination by abrasive media or reduce contamination with regular cleaning.
Load specificationsPermissible loads apply for conveyorsections only under the condition thatworkpiece pallets with the maximumpermissible weight have accumulated.Higher loads are permissible ifaccumulation can be safely avoided.Accumulation operation is notpermissible on lift transverse units.
