• Underground access possible in week 51 – as from Monday morning 9:30– Ulli and Philippe will start the RP search at 8:30

• Access in weeks 52 & 1 will be restricted (only critical activities)

• No access in these periods:– Lift maintenance 20th Dec 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM– Evacuation test 28th Dec (whole day)– Lift conformity 3rd Jan (whole day)

• Magnets will stay off– Ramp down on Monday 17th at 6:00 or 8:00, depending on LHC program (SL

action)

• DAQ-DCS-HLT available at all times

Detector Activity

SPD • Pressure test on the old inlet lines.- Nitrogen bottle connected with a manifold that feeds the 10 inlet

connections at the plant while the other side of the pipe (PP4) will be closed with 10 caps. The pressure (10b) will be kept for several hours in order to identify possible leaks checking the leak rate with a digital pressure manometer.

• Cleaning of filters in PP3 of sectors 0, 1, 2, 3 and 8.- Start on Monday morning. Cleaning by vacuum pump. Need to

access PP4 several times every day.- If on Friday morning (21st Dec) the cleaning process is not

satisfactory will leave the cleaning machine on until Friday 4th Jan when will disconnect it and restart the cooling loops.

• Drilling of the filter in PP3 of sector 3 (tbc).- Access to PP4 and PP1 to install the manometers and equipment

necessary for the PP3 filter's drilling of sector 3.• Filters replacement in PP4.• Replacement of the compressor "B” and of the pump “A”.

Detector Activity

SSD Replace 7 CAEN LV boards with modified ones

TPC • Wk 51: install TPC upgrade prototype (IROC + drift box) in the miniframe. Wk 52-1: intervene in the cavern if needed, in particular for gas leaks, if any.

- The prototype is an aluminum box (typical dimension 50 cm) flushed with the TPC gas and instrumented with HV and 1-2 readout channels (with LV).

- HV, LV and a scope will be installed in one rack (A15 or so)- The cables are already pulled.

• Laser: the work will be done in the laser hut with or without the L3 magnet on. Time needed: 2 times 1/2 day of access. Wednesday 19th:

- Laser2: repair hardware error: replace flash lamp or top up secondary cooling water

- Laser1: improve the energy output by replacing some mirrors.• Modify the HV distribution to OROC A05 and C06.

Detector Activity

TRD • Mon: check of the LV connections on the C side of the TRD supermodules (IR camera, voltage measurements). Depending on the outcome of the survey:

- tightening of problematic LV connections.- adding of patch cables for problematic connections.

• Tue or Wed (1h): check connector for the LV supplies in rack I26• Tue (few hours): help EN-CV to leak tests on the TRD cooling system.• Tue (2h): connect the GTU DCS boards to ethernet multiplexer setup in

rack C19• install backup trigger fiber from pretrigger (bottom of L3) to sectors 02

and 03 (C-side). The current fibers of the BACKUP trigger system for sectors 02 and 03 seem to be broken.

TOF • Replacement of faulty DCDC converter in SR2C• Replacement of 2 faulty Detector Readout Modules (DRM) in sector 6 side

A and sector 7 side A (access from miniframe):- the upper part of these TOF crates is completely blocked by pipes

(gas and cooling) and cables.- the safest way to replace this boards is to unplug all the TDCs and to

extract the DRMs from the bottom (estimated time to unplug/replug one crate is ½ day).

HMP Replacement of CAEN LV power supply

PMD Repair FE chains (need to move the detector to parking position) (tbc)Repair the CROCUS modules. Few days after 30th Dec.

T0 • Inspection of T0 trigger electronics: check the thresholds of OTVX signal.- Access to O18-O19 racks- Standalone run with calibration trigger

• Reset the calibration laser system.- Access to O18-O19 racks

MTK FPGA software update ST3-4-5 (need nacelle).Replacements/rearrangements of readout cards in FASS and outside.

MTG No activity on detector. Electronics:- Spare DARC & Regional boards test in situ, crucial for p-A- Need DAQ control. It takes ~2 days of activity. Need to access to the MTR

global crate in C-side of level 0 and the gangways C-side.

TS4 – other activities

• TE-VSC: installation and test of the GIS table (crane needed – remove green fences)– Start Monday at 14:00 – will close the central valve

• PH-DT (gas group): replace pump of TRD gas system. 2 pumps are currently working in parallel (9’500h and 8’000h of work – limit is 10’000h)• Tue 18th Dec.’12 (tbc) swap one pump

• EN-CV:– Maintenance drainage pump (‘pompe de relevage’) (UX25)– Maintenance P2 chillers (19-21 Dec)

• EN-HE: put UX25 crane in operation (reinstall electronics)

• EN-HE (Réel-Altéad): installation of anti collision system between PR709 (SX2) and PR774 (UX25)


TS4 – Diesel and SVC tests 1/2

• Diesel test planned on Wednesday 19/12 from 7:00 AM to 7:05 AM• A ~5 minutes cut of:

– all offices, meeting rooms, wall outlets, light, coffee machine– all SXL2– Working Rooms in the ACR– the non UPS part of the detector cooling plants (interlocks triggered)– the gas systems (PLCs stopped, interlocks triggered)– the circulation of iced and mixed water, ventilation

• Are NOT affected at P2:– all equipment on UPS– all racks in CR and UX

• For info: this is CERN-wide, this affects also all offices and labs in Meyrin


All gas systems stopped on Wed before 7:00What about Detector Cooling?

TS4 – Diesel and SVC tests 2/2

• 18kV compensator (‘filter’) test, planned on Wednesday 19/12 starting at 09:30 AM– Possible perturbations on all networks, including rack power.

Only exception: UPS power– Advise to ramp down all HV and if possible LV (possible trips of CAEN and

ISEG)

• Central systems availability during these two tests:• DAQ:

– Will shutdown consoles in WRs and majority of CR1 on Tuesday evening (t.b.c by RC)

• HLT:– Might shutdown part of CR2 (t.b.c. if and when)

• DCS, safety systems:– Not affected (but DCS maintenance in the shadow)


TS4 – DCS

• Bottom line: don’t touch!– But please make your backups

• Monday 17/12 (morning)– ‘Usual’ DataBase updates, normally transparent– Possible DB shutdown for repowering

• Wednesday 19/12 (morning)– In the shadow of the 18kV filter tests– Reboot of DCS cluster– Make sure you save your work (latest Wed. 19 at 09:00)


TS4 – End-Of-Year closure

• Weeks 52 & 1• Different from last years

– ALICE remains ‘powered’– 24/24 shift coverage (DCS and DAQ)– Re-enforced on-call for online systems

• Immediate actions are possible by shifters– Make sure you provide clear and precise instructions!

• As other years: daily inspection tours in CRs and UX– To spot the obvious– ‘Usual suspects’ will be contacted soon
