T.S.BOOKSHOP NEWS Volume 14 Issue 2 June 2009 We recently created a special edi- tion of the T.S. Bookshop News for the “Meditate 09 Australian Medi- tation Conference”: we included a definition of Theosophy, a descrip- tion of the types of things we sell, and a detailed introduction to our range of CDs on meditation. It struck me that this might be of in- terest to all our readers, so this newsletter is based on that one! The T.S. Bookshop is the retail arm of the Melbourne Theosophi- cal Society: you might therefore ask, “what is Theosophy?” “The word Theosophy comes from the Greek ‘theosophia’ meaning ‘Divine Wisdom’. Theosophy is the essence of the great religions and philosophies of the world. The most important principle of Theosophy is its presentation of a holistic world-view which empha- sises the unity and interconnected- ness of all life, the basic oneness of all peoples and all species of life on earth. Theosophical teachings point to a spark in each of us that is always part of the Divine Life or Source from which all arises, and affirm that all life is ultimately One. The Theosophical Society does not claim to have conclusive answers to life’s deeper purpose, but does provide an environment for free enquiryand exploration.” At the T.S. Bookshop, we sell books and products that support this world view: you will find books on the world’s great reli- gious traditions, including Bud- dhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Is- lam, Judaism and Taoism; we have books on astrology, tarot, palm- istry and dowsing; we also have books on psychic development, dreams, past lives and reincarna- tion. You can find information on alternative health, aromatherapy, Ayurveda, body therapies, Chinese Medicine, crystals, energetic heal- ing, herbs, homoeopathy, martial arts, massage, nutrition and yoga. A few words about meditation from our music buyer, Perry HoltMost people are familiar with meditation, and whether for health reasons or a desire to plumb the depths ofone’s self, it is widely practiced. It is prescribed by therapists of various disciplines to assist in healing, orhelping a patient reduce stress levels which can damage our bodies in so many ways. Meditation is used byall sacred traditions as a means for aspirants to get in touch with their inner self: its practice is seen as a vitalpart of the Buddhist, Sufi and Yoga traditions, amongst many others. Put simply in the words of British psy-chologist John H. Clark, “Meditation is a method by which a person concentrates more and more upon lessand less. The aim is to empty the mind while, paradoxically, remaining alert”. He goes on to say, “Normally,if we empty our minds, as we do when we settle down to sleep - for instance, ‘counting sheep’ to narrow ourthoughts - we become lethargic and eventually go to sleep. The paradox of meditation is that it both emptiesthe mind, and at the same time, encourages alertness”.With the advent of recorded media, many meditation instructors and teachers began to record meditationsand make them available so that people could practice at home. Naturally, there are many kinds of medita-tion, to suit the many kinds of people and their needs. Correspondingly, a teacher’s voice may be a comfort-ing balm to one meditator, to another, an irritation, which is why we encourage you to come in and have alisten on headphones before purchasing your meditation CDs. Following is an introduction to the differenttypes of meditation CDs that we stock, and a brief review of the most popular.

The visualiza-tions can range from simple beachsidewalks to journeys into fantastic realms.Within this category we can includehealing imagery, an area that is con-tinuously expanding as the mind/bodyinteraction is explored. Another com-mon motif used in guided meditationsis that of light. Chakra meditations areincluded within this category: these fo-cus your attention on the various en-ergy centres of your subtle body, andwhile originating from esoteric Yogapractice, they now serve as a kind ofcombined body scan and visualization.Sometimes a period of silence is in-cluded within the meditation. In truth, the fact that these are guided through-out, suggests that rather than beingmeditations they are really visualiza-tion/relaxations as one is always listen-ing/aware of the narration.
