According to Jewish tradition, the number 40 is
perhaps the most significant of all numbers. In the
story of Noah, it rained for 40 days and 40 nights.
Moses was on Mt. Sinai for 40 days before he
received the 10 Commandments. The Israelites
wandered in the desert for 40 years before they
entered the land of Israel.
In each case the number 40 represented a moment
of transition for the Jewish people. In each case, the
Israelites entered a higher plane of existence after
this period.
As we begin the next phase of our history as a
congregation, my wish is that we go from strength
to strength and move closer to our goals as a caring
community, teaching Jewish values, celebrating life
and enabling all who join us to live out their lives on
a higher plane of existence.
‐ Rabbi Susan Abramson
