    MATERIALS ANALYSIS

    19 The long term goals in learning language are

    for the pupils to be able to communicateeffectively and for the pupils to develop allfour language skills.

    The activities provided in the material aresuitable to develop the four skills among thepupils.

    There are communicative activities in the

    material that will be able to help the learnersto equip themselves with goodcommunication skills and use it in a variety ofcontexts.

    50/50 For pupils in urban areas, it will be quite easy

    for them as they are exposed to the languageitself, however, for those in rural areas, it

    might be quite difficult for them as they haveless exposure to the language.

    The language used in the material consists ofsimple language at the beginning(which the

    pupils might have already known) and quite anumber of challenging words towards theend.

    The activities are planned in the way to suitthe skills stated in the book. Thus, most ofthe activities will be able to meet therequirements for each lesson.

    Besides that, the to ensure that the pupilsunderstand the new words/keywords,pictures are provided for each word.

    The topics, themes, and ideas are related tothe pupils daily life.

    It is relevant as the pupils can relate it tothemselves. For example, World of Self-I amspecial, Hobbies, When I grow up.

    It is also deemed to be interesting for thelearners as there are stories included in the

    Moral values are incorporated in eachchapter. Exp: Unit2 do and donts, 4cooperation, 10 quality of a good friend.

    The pupils will feel more indulged in thelearning as it has hands-on activities. Thelesson will also be more enjoyable to thepupils.

    The book highlights the four skills-listening,speaking, reading, writing, the languagecontent-sound system(phonemic awareness)and also language arts.

    The pupils are given opportunities to developall the skills as the activities are planned tosuit the need for each skill.

    For KSSR, the time allocated for one week is8-10 periods, depending on the school.

    Thus, each skill will be taught for 2 periods.

    It is flexible and depends on the teacherwhether to use more or less time to teach theskill.

    Some of the activities provided in the bookrequire the pupils to utilise their previousknowledge to complete.

    The pupils can also be more creative whiledoing the activities.

    The activities involves communicative skills,question and answer, approaches-whole classand small group.

    The group activities foster the pupils tocommunicate with each other effectively.

    For the learners to interpret and comprehendthe meaning, the time used depends on thelearners.

    For expressing the meaning, most of theactivities requires the learners to sing, chant,read aloud, write and do. Thus, the timedevoted is quite long.

    Each unit includes hands-on activities for thelearners to use the skill or ability learned.

    Besides that, the activities are suitable to thedevelopmental stage of the pupils. Forexample, learning how to know a new friend,when they are at a stage to know morefriends.

    In each unit, the contents are arrangedaccording to skills. From Listening speaking-phonemic awareness-reading-writing-language arts.

    The material has continuity. For example, the pupils learn about phonemic

    awareness and use the sound they have learntto read aloud the text for reading.

    Language art is to wrap up the whole lesson.

    The pupils do not really have the chance tosequence, divide or modify the material asthey do not have the ability to do so.
