The Department for Transport, in developing plans for a Strategic Freight Network identified the Great Northern Great Eastern (GNGE) joint line as a means of diverting freight from the East Coast Main Line, thereby increasing network capacity. The enhancement scheme involved upgrading all the core railway infrastructure between Peterborough (Werrington Junction) and Doncaster, including the upgrade of over 30 public vehicular level crossings, a significant proportion of which were gated crossings controlled from an adjacent signal box or crossing keepers cabin.

TSP’s dedicated level crossing design team was asked to assist Network Rail’s in-house team in the production of the AIP Ground Plans. This was a significant challenge as a majority of the level crossing upgrades involved the introduction of a new type of level crossing control using radar technology and design experience of this type of crossing throughout the industry was extremely limited. Despite a steep learning curve TSP delivered their allocation of AIP Ground Plans on schedule. Following completion of the AIP Ground Plans, TSP was then awarded the production of Approved for Construction (AFC) Ground Plans for all sites, including those for which Network Rail had completed the designs at AIP stage.

Despite the significant constraints, TSP delivered all the AFC Ground Plans to the client’s satisfaction and the level crossings were commissioned on schedule. TSP’s scope of work also included the production of as-built ground plans and these were undertaken following post-commissioning topographical surveys.
