Application and Function

The HP2 Lift-Position Units are used for precisionpositioning of workpiece pallets at automated work-stations. Positioning pins on the HP2 engage lo-cator bushings in the support plate of the pallet tolift it up off the conveyor. The resulting positionalaccuracy is ±0.05 mm in the X and Y axes. The aircylinder generates 247 lbs. of upward force (1100N) at 58 PSI (4 bar). A stop gate is required tostop the pallet before the lift-position unit can beactuated.

Fig. 1

The HP2 lifts and lowers pallets with a double-act-ing pneumatic cylinder. There are four lift rangesavailable and, within each range, the lift is infinitelyadjustable. The upper and lower position of theHP2 are sensed by proximity switches, not in-cluded. The lift-position unit used is determined bythe workpiece pallet’s length and width.

The HP2 can be mounted to either the bottom ofthe conveyor line, or the top of a machine baseplate in an automated assembly station. It is avail-able with either a positioning plate, or a lift plate(for mounting a custom positioning plate).

Assembly

The line mounted lift-position unit, like virtually allBosch conveyor modules, is connected to the trans-fer system using the T-slot principle (Fig. 6). For T-bolts, insert the T-bolt into the slot (A), and tightendown the hex nut. As it tightens, it will turn the T-bolt 90 ° in the slot (B), creating a friction lock (C).The same principle applies to T-nuts. The maximumallowable torque is 25 Nm (18.5 ft-lbs).

Assembly tip: T-bolts also have a mark on theend of the threaded shaft that will be perpendicu-lar to theT-slot when the bolt is in its locked posi-tion.

Accessories

Note:Refer to section 12 of the TSplus catalog for or-dering information and part numbers of the acces-sories listed above.

Conversion Kits

These kits make it possible to convert the lift-position unit from station to line mount, and vice-versa. The station-mount to line-mount LPU con-version kits include the neccessary hardwareand should be selected for the appropriate linewidth. The line-mount to station-mount conver-sion kit will work with any size LPU.

Installing the Lift-Position Damping Kit

This optional damping kit reduces the air flow tothe lift cylinder at the point where the pallet reachesthe transport height. For short cycle times, whenthe HP2 needs to operate quickly, this kit providesa means to lower the pallet faster and still place itgently back on the conveyor.

Attach the switching cam, short profile up, to themounting bracket using (2) M6 x 20 SHCS, lockwashers and hex nuts provided. Next, attach theflow control valve to the two vertical slots in theproximity sensor mounting bracket, as shown inFig. 10, using (3) M6 x 35 SHCS, lock washers, plain washers and hex nuts.

Now adjust the elevation of the flow control valve, such that the high point on the cam engages theroller as the pallet is being set down on the con-veying media. This will be the point at which the airflow is most restricted, slowing down the cylindertravel speed.

Fig. 10

A hex screw acts as the hard stop for roller travel. As the hex screw is adjusted out, the cylinder travelspeed will be decreased.

Finally, adjust the angle of the cam by looseningthe bottom SHCS and retightening at the desiredangle. The greater the cam angle, the more quicklythe pallet will be decelerated as it is set down.

The optional traffic control kit includes pallet stopsand proximity sensor brackets. A pre-stop and pal-let stop are required for every lift position unit, tosingulate the pallets coming into the station.

Bolt one VE2 stop (1) 18mm from the center ofthe locating pin on the front side of the LPU, asshown in Fig. 11. Bolt the second pallet stop atleast 290mm from the center of the same locatingpin, as shown in Fig. 11.

Now attach the proximity switch mounting brack-ets (2) to the front of each pallet stop. This willprovide sensing, via the proximity sensor (4) (notincluded), to re-extend the VE2 stop dog after thepallet has been released.

Compressed Air Connections

Shop air at 4-6 bar (60-90psi) is required to oper-ate the HP2. The compressed air supply may belubricated or unlubricated, filtered air.

All pneumatic tubing is 8mm dia. The connectionsare to be made as shown in Fig. 13, depending onwhether or not position damping is required.

Flow controls should be adjusted as required tocontrol cylinder speed. Turn flow control “A” cw toslow lift speed in the up direction. Turn “A” ccwand “B” cw to speed up cylinder travel.

WARNING!

• Use a qualified technician who is familiar withthe control system during the initial start-up.

• In case of control system failure, DO NOTattempt to catch or in any way prevent a palletfrom falling from the end of the conveyor. Usethe emergency stop switch to halt conveyormovement!

• KEEP HANDS CLEAR of moving conveyorsand pallets. Pallet accumulation creates a crushhazard between pallets, stop gates, and guiderails. A crush and pinch hazard exists betweenLift Position Units, Lift Transfer Units, and LiftRotate Units. Assembly operations should beperformed ONLY when the workpiece pallethas come to a complete stop.

• DO NOT perform pressing operations on aworkpiece pallet without the use of a Lift Posi-tion Unit.

• DO NOT operate the conveyor or any othercomponents in the system with the guardsremoved. It is the operator’s responsibility tomake sure that all guards, covers, and othersafety equipment is in place before the systemis put into operation.

CAUTION!• Do not operate or work near mechanical equip-

ment when wearing loose clothing. Moving compo-nents such as roller chain, drive belts, drive shaftsand pallets can snag long belts, scarves, ties andother loose fitting garments, pull the worker into theequipment and cause serious, or in extreme cases, life threatening injury.

• Operators having long hair must wear appropriatehead protection (hair nets, hats, and hair caps)to minimize the risk associated with working nearmoving machinery. Hanging hair can get caught inmoving components such as roller chain, drivebelts, drive shafts and pallets, pull the worker intothe equipment and cause serious, or in extremecases, life threatening injury.

The TSplus conveyor is designed to transport BoschWT2 workpiece pallets or WT2 workpiece palletframes with integrated fixtures built into the palletdesign. Since the conveyor is modular in design andpart of a larger operating assembly system, it is the

responsibility of the integrator or end user to provide acontrol system and operating procedures. For yoursafety, please observe the following guidelines whenoperating the conveyor:
