These places receive little rainfalls. Days are hot and nights are cold. There are fewer trees and plants. They often have extreme

temperatures. Summers are long and hot, and

winters are short and mild.

When they first started to make villages they were made of stone and adobe which is a type of clay that hardens like cement.

They built apartment buildings called pueblos, they were about five stories high.

The Anasazis built their dwellings against mountain cliff walls.

The Hopis cooked, served, and stored there food in clay pots.

They raised crops of corn, squash, beans and cotton used to make clothing.

They used plants to make dye colors such as orange, yellow, red, green, and black.

• Men wove the cloth for blankets and clothing.

• Hopis embroidered designs on their clothes.• Hopi women wore cotton cloth to stay cool

in the summer heat.• Southwest Indians create many pieces of

art. They make pottery, clothing and wood baskets that are still sold in stores and arts and craft fairs.

• They make anything such as an outfit, a dress with gorgeous flowers on it, to a decorated headdress, full of feathers.

The tribes are located in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado and The Great Plains.

They are also located in Texas and Oklahoma.

Naming of a newborn baby is an important part of the Southwest Indian culture, that it is not done by the parents, but relatives and tribe leaders.

The best skill of the Southwest Indians is their basket making or weaving.
