Hi Turners,
The Playoffs, the Superbowl, Mardi
Gras, Jerry Markowitz’s demo on gob-
lets and Don Mercante’s demo on bird-
houses what a start to what we hope will
be a great year for Bayou Woodturners.
We are just getting rolling for 2010 this
will be a busy year for our club. In the
next two months we
will have metal
spinning and mois-
ture analysis in
wood at our next
meeting, a Freedom
Pen Turn a Thon,
SKEW and in Mo-
bile turning with
Binh Pho, a full ca-
lendar.
Our February meet-
ing was handled by
Don Mercante, Don
S.K.E.W. falling on the meeting we
would have brought in the bird house
challenge pieces we will judge bird hous-
es in May, so you have 3 months to
create a bird house for the challenge. We
will have a rack available to display bird
houses that hang.
Our next meeting is going to
feature Doc LeJeune and Keith
Welsh on the mini. They will
discuss moisture in wood and
its effects in turning and in
wood movement after the piece
is turned. There will also be a
discussion of effects of radical
humidity changes on a piece
when it is moved from a shop
without humidity controls to
another location with humidity
control or movement to another
put a lot of work into his demo and it
showed. Don brought us through all
the steps necessary to turn and con-
struct a bird house. Don presented a
challenging project that incorporates
both woodworking and woodturning.
I hope everyone will take up the chal-
lenge of making a birdhouse for our
challenge on bird houses. Due to
city with very low humidity.
Our main demo will be handled by Brian
Harrell and Tres Lennep. They will be
demonstrating metal spinning and tool mak-
ing for metal spinning. They will focus on
shaping metal on a lathe using handmade
tools that everyone can create in their shop.
This project can be done on minis to full

Making your own Star Block
Our brief business meeting began at
9:05 AM. Once again we announced that
Binh Pho will be in Mobile the weekend
of April 24-25. Binh will cover turning
his signature thin wall vase and bowl, and
the airbrushing and piercing of same.
Cost of the weekend is $60.00 if you are
not a member of the local club. If you
are interested, John Byl is the man to
contact. The Pensacola club will be host-
ing Michael Hosaluk in the spring.
S.K.E.W. will take place in April this
year. It will be held on our regular meet-
ing date that month and will replace our
regular meeting.
On March 20th we will hold a pen turn-
a-thon for the Freedom Pen Project at
Joel Blazek's place in Bush, Louisiana.
We will start at about 7:00 AM. and go
until we run out of pen blanks. Lunch
will be provided. Remember, our goal is
to turn 2010 pens for the project by July 4th.
All our back newsletters will now be avail-
able on the club website and we are working
on an index for the newsletters and notes
from our demos. There is also a members'
area on the website that gives club members'
info.: address, phone number, e-mail address
and so on. It's password protected to insure
privacy. If you want to have your own page
on the website, please contact Joel Blazek.
Any photos should be in the appropriate for-
mat. Also, a reminder that you can reserve
items from the club library via the website.
Don't forget next month's challenge -- gob-
lets, and kaleidoscopes.
The business portion of the meeting con-
cluded at 9:22 a.m.

SWAT UPDATE
The Southwest Association of Turners
(SWAT) will hold its annual sympo-
sium in Waco, Texas on August 27-29,
2010. The date has been moved from
the usual October meeting time in order
to be able to reserve the Waco Conven-
tion Center for the next three years.
Waco was selected as the only facility
that was centrally located to most of
member chapters and was capable of
handling the increased enrollment.
They will have another great lineup of
demonstrators this year. Visit the web
site (www.SWATurners.org) and get
the latest information about the interna-
tional, national and regional demon-
strators that will be at SWAT. From the
web site you can print an application
form to attend the symposium. You al-
so have the ability to register for the
symposium on line.
Make plans to attend SWAT in Waco
and bring your work to display at the
Instant Gallery.
Since they are an all-volunteer organi-
zation they are able to keep the cost of
admission low so that more people can
take advantage of this fantastic learning
opportunity. The cost of admission also
includes lunches.

Skew is coming up pretty quick. It will take the place of the April 10th meeting. If you would like to be a demonstrator please contact me at the meeting or by e-mail [email protected]. I have 4 open spots for demonstrators. We will have 4 stations set up for both morning and af-ternoon demos. So far we will have metal spinning, open segmented demo and boxes. We are trying to put together some things you can do on the mini lathes. It will once again be at Joel's shop located in Bush, LA. This is a great place to hold such events as we have very few limits as to what can be demonstrated. (Joel might get upset if we burn the place down). Donations will be accepted at the door. Lunch will be provided as well as drinks and snacks. This is a great event for demonstrators and atten-dees. I hope to see you all there.

size lathes. They will go into the process of tool making and
where to get all of the materials used in the demo. It has been
many years since our last demo on metal spinning and I know
for many of you it may be a first, don’t miss it.
For those of you that have visited the website lately (bayou-
woodturner.org) you will notice it is growing in content. For
instance the meeting notes for metal spinning are already on the
website. We have added some past demonstrations and will
continue to add information to the site as it grows. If you want
to see the newsletter before it hits the emails or the mail box
you will see it posted on the website first, along with old new-
sletters going back to 1999. Rick Myers has volunteered to
help me manage the website and will be your contact for ques-
tions and suggestions about our website.
Speaking of volunteering we need members to handle demon-
strations for 2010. This is a club of volunteers willing to share
their knowledge with other turners. I would strongly encourage
some of our members to team up and do a demo featuring 2
members, it take a lot of the pressure off of doing a demo. In
doing a demo you will learn a lot about what you are demon-
strating while preparing for the demo. Please contact me if you
are willing to share a little time and knowledge with the club
and do a demo.
And while we are promoting volunteering we have the opportu-
nity to share our skills with members of the armed forces
around the globe. We will have a pen turn a thon on March 20th
on the Northshore starting at 8:00AM and finishing when we
run out of pens. Eddie Castelin and Joe Kelly are heading up
this program for our club and already have a great start to
reaching our goal this year. If you are able to share some time
and have a great time doing it let Eddie or Joe know you are vo-
lunteering to turn pens for the troops.
Binh Pho will be coming to the Mobile area on April 24 & 25
for a weekend demonstration. Binh is one of the best thin wall
turners out there and he has taken air brushing, carving and
piercing to a new level. I have attended his classes at AAW and
both he and his demonstrations are well worth seeing. If you are
interested in attending see John Byl at the March meeting. The
cost for the 2 day weekend session is $60.00 and well worth it.
We have plenty to do and see in the next 60 days I hope every-
one will have time to participate in as many activities as time
allows. I would also encourage you to consider doing a demon-
stration for your club during 2010. Without your participation
we can’t grow as a club.

Directions to March Meeting
From New Orleans take I-10 heading
west to Veterans Blvd. Turn left onto
Veterans and go to David Drive. If you
don't see the K-Mart on the corner, you
turned the wrong way. Turn left on Da-
vid Dr. Go South for about 2 1/4 mile.
You will cross Airline Hwy and go over a
bridge where David Drive turns into
Dickory Ave. Be careful not to speed in
these areas, police are everywhere! You
will pass Dock Av. at the light on your
right. Dickory Ave. is only a mile long
and at the end, you will first turn right
on Gardner then left onto Hickory Ave.
Stay on Hickory for two miles. After you
cross Jefferson Hwy. at River Road turn
right and go two blocks. Turn right on to
Elodie Ave. You're just about there! As
you go up Elodie about 100 yards, you
will see a red brick building. Round the
curve and turn left into the Parking lot
marked "Enter."
