IntroductionIntroduction

Since his arrival in Lawrence nearly a decade ago, head coach Mark Francis has built the Jayhawks into a strong program which has competed for Big

12 championships and postseason berths every season. The Jayhawks have not fi nished below fourth in the Big 12 Conference standings since the 2000 season, and have won more regular season matches than any other conference school not named Texas A&M or Texas.

However, there is still a sense that the team has fallen short of expectations. In each of the two years since the Kansas’ Big 12 championship in 2004, the Jayhawks have been eleminated in the fi rst round of the conference tournament and missed the NCAA Championships.

The team enters the 2007 season on a mission to take that next step and return to the postseason, after fi nishing 11-7-1 last year.

“After barely missing out the last two years, our goal is to get into the NCAA Tournament any way we can,” Francis said. “We’ve been there before and we know what it takes.”

The road to the NCAA Tournament will not be easy. KU loaded its schedule with traditional soccer powers, including six schools that were ranked in the fi nal NSCAA Top 25 last season. However, Francis believes this will only make the team stronger.

“With a young team like we have, we need to play a tough non-conference schedule,” he said. “It prepares us for the conference and makes us a more experienced team at the end of the season.”

Francis’ team returns nine starters and 19 players overall from last year’s squad that may have been just one victory shy of accomplishing its goals. Of the 19 returning players, just fi ve seniors make up the 2007 KU roster. Along with a talented nucleus of returning players, the Jayhawks bring in 11 freshmen, who made up a recruiting class which was

ranked fi fth in the Central Region by Soccer Buzz. This accolade has Francis and the Jayhawks confi dent

heading into the 2007 season. “This is one of the most talented groups that we’ve ever had

here,” he said. “I’m excited to get on the fi eld and see what we can do.”

Forwards

Scoring goals was an area of concern for Francis and the Jayhawks last season. After scoring 37 goals in 2005, the number dropped to just 29 last season. One of the things the team stressed during the spring campaign was learning how to fi nish the play.

The team, however, does return its two leading scorers from a year ago in junior Jessica Bush (eight goals, two assists) and sophomore Monica Dolinsky (six goals, fi ve assists). Both players were honored as selections on Soccer Buzz’sAll-Central Region teams last season and both showed the ability to fi nd the net. Finding options beyond the top two might be KU’s biggest challenge as Bush and Dolinsky factored in nearly two-thirds of the team’s scoring plays last season. Both players also fi gure to see time as midfi elders this year as well.

Senior Emily Strinden as well as freshmen Taylor Blue and Erin Ellefson will likely be Francis’ top options behind Bush and Dolinsky at forward. Striden tallied a game-winning goal in overtime against Alabama last season, while Blue and Ellefson were teammates at St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

Depending on the team’s formation, several other players could see time up front, including junior Sara Rogers and freshman Emily Cressy.

“We have a lot of options up front,” Francis said. “Trying to fi gure out who our best players are each week is going to be a challenge for our coaching staff.”

Midfielders

The Jayhawks have the ability to throw several different styles of play at their opponents due to the versatility of their midfi eld corps. KU utilized both a 4-4-2 and a 4-3-3 formation last year to match up with different opponents’ strengths and expects to do the same this season.

Junior Missy Geha leads this group after starting every match as the center midfi elder a year ago.

Sophomore Shannon McCabe provides the team with a fl air for the dramatic as well as speed from the outside. The 5-foot-6 midfi elder scored a pair of game-winning goals last season, including one in the fi nal minute of KU’s upset of No. 12 Duke.

Senior Nicole Cauzillo and Rogers will also see their names in the starting lineup. Cauzillo is coming back from another season that was marred by injuries, while Rogers tallied a pair of goals in an increasing role last season.

Cressy will also challenge for a starting position. Cressy is fresh off a two-goal performance in the U-17 US Youth Soccer National Championship match, which earned her the tournament’s Golden Boot award.

Francis has the ability to mix and match with his bench,

Kansas Reloads For Pursuit of Big 12 Title

Jayhawks return 19 players, add 11 newcomers

Junior Jessica Bush scored eight goals and tallied 18 points to lead the team and earn All-Central Region Third Team honors in 2006.

IntroductionIntroduction

as 5-foot-10 sophomore Kim Boyer provides height, while freshmen Kaitlyn Cunningham, Rachel Morris and Erin Lewis also fi gure to see minutes in the midfi eld.

“One of our biggest advantages we have as a team is our option to play three or four in the middle,” Francis said. “We don’t drop off in talent much from our starters to our backup players.”

Defenders

Very few teams were as good defensively as Kansas during the last seven weeks of the 2006 season. The Jayhawks shut out seven of their fi nal 11 opponents, and allowed more than a single goal in a match just once after Sept. 15.

The defensive backfi eld returns three of four starters including All-Big 12 Second Team selection Jenny Murtaugh and Central Region All-Freshman Team pick Estelle Johnson.

The group, while talented, has proven to be extremely durable throughout their careers. Johnson missed just one start last season, while Murtaugh and senior captain Afton Sauer have started every match in each of the last two years.

Sauer, a 2004 Freshman All-American, has missed just 10 minutes of action during her last two seasons and leads the team with 62 consecutive matches started.

KU will likely fi ll its vacant starting position with either versatile junior Kristin Graves or one of three highly-touted freshmen: Katie Williams, Lauren Jackson or Geneva Magness. Even if they don’t earn the starting role, all four players will likely factor into the mix at some point.

“We return three of four starting defenders from a year ago, but those kids will have to re-establish themselves to be in our starting lineup,” Francis said.

Goalkeepers

Junior Julie Hanley started all 19 matches between the pipes and enjoyed a breakout season. The 5-foot-9 junior became just the second KU goalkeeper to record a goals against average under 1.00 for the season. She also shut out seven of KU’s 19 opponents, which ranks as the third-best single-season total in program history.

Senior Colleen Quinn will look to push Hanley again for the starting job. Quinn boasts a 1.09 career goals against average, and an .810 save percentage in 13 career contests at KU.

The Jayhawks added a pair of goalkeepers over the summer in walk-on freshman Deidre Leist and redshirt freshman Stephanie Baugh, who transferred from West Virginia. Both players will have eligibility remaining after Hanley and Quinn graduate.

“Julie did a great job for us last year, but she’ll have to earn the starting role again this year,” Francis said. “I anticipate good competition between (Hanley and Quinn).”

Senior Afton Sauer has started 62 straight matches in the defensive backfi eld for the Jayhawks.

Junior goalkeeper Julie Hanley posted a 0.98 goals against average and seven shutouts last season.
