If you live in Uptown, you are a fan of historic buildings and old architecture. You must be! You live in anold house! You choose to put up with unexpected repair costs, creaky stairs, inadequate insulation, dodgyelectric wiring, inconsistent water pressure, no air-conditioning, and most probably, less bathrooms thannewer houses with the same square footage. (I could go on and on!) Of course, all of these issues can beaddressed ... for a price! But those of us who live here clearly prefer to live with these inconveniencesthan to buy a cookie-cutter house with little character and no history!

Sometimes I LONG for one or two of the missing conveniences, but I know I would never be happy livingin a modern home. I love the history I can feel in the very walls of my house, and I love the history of thehomes and neighborhood surrounding it. If you are like me, you find local historical trivia fascinating, solet me share a bit of neighborhood lore with you.

Did you ever wonder where our street names come from? I refer you to theTudor style building at the corner of Hadley and Painter. It is currently adoctor's office, but this home was built by Lindley Baldwin, one of Whittier'sfounding Quaker pioneers. The Baldwins soon sold the home to WashingtonHadley, another of Whittier's founding fathers. Washington and his wifeNaomi were, of course, Quakers. They had 11 children!

Mr. Hadley was a prominent banker. In 1889, he took control of the PickeringLand & Water Company, which was founded two years earlier to create the

3Peer-^t±3 town of Whittier. He was one of the founding truste-es of Whittier College, and

made large donations in its support. In 1895, he established one of the firstbanks in town, t:he Bank of Whittier, on the southeast corner of Philadelphia

and Greenleaf. He remained president when it lat:erbecame the First National Bank of Whittier. The build-ing was eventually replaced by none other thai ouriconic Bank of America building (currently Nixon Plaza)!

Mr. Hadley died in 1911 at the age of 94, but he is for-ever memorialized by the Whittier streets that werenamed in his honor-Washington Avenue and HadleyStreet.

If you are wondering what other streets honor foundingfathers, let me throw out some names and you see ifthey sound familiar: Jonothan Bailey, Elwood Newlin,Henry Dorla nd, John Painter and Aquila Pickering.

North Washington Avenue ... hasso many conveniences included inthe construction of the home itselfthat it is said to be furnishedbefore it has any furn.Iture in it."So read the January 10, 1910Whittler Daily News in a descrip-tion of the Craftsman home nowoccupied by WHNA neighborsHenry and Christina Bouchot at6318 Washington.

In its aim to make the home sim-pler and more efficient, the early20th Century bungalow movementwas marked by the inclusion offurniture literally built in to thehome.

Here are some of the commonkinds:

Window seats and benches,oft:en with lids that can be lifted toreveal ample storage spacebeneath the seat. Even theopening of the laundry shoot''often doubles as a seat in thebathroom, hall or closet.

The inglenook (built in seatingnext to a fireplace in its ownrecessed alcove) functions toenhance the coziness in someambitious homes of the period.

The breakfast nook, morecommon after WWI, includesbuilt-in benches on either side of asmall table.

Bookcases & china cupboards,open or with glass doors, oftenflank a fireplace or are part of acolonnade in the archway betweenthe living room and dining room.

The colonnade, open at the top,defines adjoining rooms,

The sideboard, perhaps the mostprominent of the bungalow built-ins, sometimes has a rear openingto the kitchen for food service andis often graced by attractive glassdoors.

A desk, usually with a drop front,may balance a bookcase on theopposite side of the fireplace or befound blending into thewainscoting along a living room ordining room wall as part of abookcase or window seatensemble.

The corner c:upboard, usually1920's or later, provides storageand display area.

Open shelving `set into a nichewall is a common feature of 1920'sSpanish revival homes.

The beauty and convenience ofthese pieces can be enjoyed asmuch today as in 1910, and is areminder of the thoughtfulness,beauty of materials and crafts-manship with which our homeswere built.

CANDY CORN MILKSHAKESAN EASY, FUN AND REFRESHING FALL TREAT

Ingredients=

• Quartofvanillalcecream• Quart oforangesherbet• Coolwhip

• Yellow Food coloring

• Black,Yellow&Orange

• Sprinkles

Directions:Let your vanilla ice cream softenfor about 25 minutes outside ofthe freezer. After the ice creamis softened take 1/3 of the icecream and put it into a bowl andput the quart back in the freez-er. Add yellow food coloring tothe ice cream in the bowl untilthe desired shade is obtained.Mix well.

Take the orange sherbet out toallow it to start softening.

Get your mason I.ars, clear plastic cups, or glass c]rinking glasses and spoonyellow ice cream into the bottoms, filling the cups about 1/3. Smooth out thetop as evenly as you can and wipe the inside of the cups with a paper towelto remove streaks.

Place your cups in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to let the yellow layer hardena little. Take the vanilla ice cream out and allow it to start softening.

Remove the cups from the freezer and carefully spoon in the orange sherbet,filling the cups about 2/3 and again smoothing out the top. Wipe the excesson the inside of the cups with a paper towel. Place the cups back in the freez-er for 5-10 minutes.

Remove them from the freezer and add the final layer of vanilla ice cream,filling the cups within 1/2 inch from the top of the cup. Smooth out the topsagain. Top off your desserts with whipped cream or cool whip and add sprin-kles. Place in the freezer until they are ready to be served.
