As we continue to discuss electronic health record

implementation in the U.S., it’s interesting to learn……

Denmark’s Health Information System the

Most Efficient in the World

"Several studies … conclude that the Danish information

system is the most efficient in the world, saving doctors an

average of 50 minutes a day in administrative work," The New

York Times reported. According to the same source, a 2008

Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society

study (pdf) "estimated that electronic record keeping saved

Denmark’s health system as much as $120 million a year."

In Denmark, "virtually all primary care physicians and nearly

half of the hospitals use electronic records." In contrast, only

10% of hospitals and 17% of physicians in the United States

use electronic health records, according to The New England

Journal of Medicine.

It’s been a cold winter, and if you’re

like me, you’re just about ready for

Spring. And with Spring comes

Records and Information Management

Month. Held annually in April, it’s the

opportune time to highlight the

profession and to educate non-Records

Managers. Celebrate it locally by

planning records management-related

activities to be held at your Company.

This month’s meeting will be held on

the Southside. Plan now to attend, and

bring a guest. Remember…a “guest” is

a potential “new member”.

Blessings!

A Note from the President…

Ferriero Takes Oath as Archivist of the United States

David S. Ferriero, the former director of the Andrew W. Mellon New York Public Libraries and a leader in the

field of research librarianship, was sworn in on November 13 as the 10th Archivist of the United States at the National

Archives and Records Administration. “I’m very excited about being here,” said Ferriero. “I am looking forward to jumping in

with both feet to work with the staff at the National Archives on the important issues that we face in a world increasingly

dependent upon information and technology.”

Suit over Bush White House E-Mails Settled

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) and the National Security Archive (NSA) reached a final settlement

of their long-running lawsuits challenging the failure of the Bush White House and the National Archives and Records

Administration (NARA) to take any action after confronted with evidence that millions of e-mails had gone missing from Bush

White House servers over a two and one-half year period. The lawsuits followed CREW’s revelation in April 2008 that the White

House had discovered the problem in the fall of 2005. Nevertheless, the Bush White House failed to recover or restore the missing

e-mails and knowingly continued to use a broken system for preserving electronic records.

Under the terms of the settlement, the Executive Office of the President (EOP) will restore a total of 94 days of missing e-mails,

which will then be sent to NARA for preservation and eventual access under either the Presidential Records Act or the Federal

Records Act. The dates for restoration were chosen based on e-mail volume and external events because there simply was not

enough money to restore all the missing e-mails. In addition, the EOP will continue to provide CREW and the NSA with records

documenting the missing e-mail problem, the response of the Bush White House to that problem, and the options for preserving

electronic records the Bush White House considered, but rejected.

To date, the Obama White House has produced thousands of pages of documents relating to these issues, all of which CREW

has posted on www.governmentdocs.org. Finally, the EOP will be providing a publicly releasable description of the system it now

uses to manage and preserve electronic records, including its e-mail archiving and backup systems. CREW and the NSA will then

dismiss their lawsuits.

Melanie Sloan, CREW’s executive director, said, “We may never know exactly what happened to all the missing emails, and which

Bush administration officials were involved in the coverup, but we do know the American public never got the full story.”
