With the new academic year already started and in track, Turn The Page comes back with a very international issue. ‘Design across cultures’ is the topic this time, for what we have created articles written from Colombia or Japan. You will also find some reflection about the connections between product and digital design and differences in cultural background. To read about this topic, go to page 8 for this number’s coverstory, ‘Towards a homogenous world’ or jump to page 36 for the article ‘Packaging, design and culture’. Changing topics, on page 44 you can read about and see the new collection of Marcel

Wanders for Alessi called Circus. Because of the occasion of the IDE masters being restructured this year, we feature a special about their international character and how alumni’s input was decisive in the design of the new structure (page 28 to 33). With this number, the last one of this committee of Turn The Page, we would like to say goodbye to a great year; it has been a lot of hard work but definitely worth it. Hope you enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed being part of Turn The Page!

Before starting at IDE, Philip Battin already had working experience in several design offices and consultancies and a Bachelor in Design of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design in Copenhagen. “What I liked about Delft was that it offered a great balance between theory and practice”, Battin says. “In traditional design schools, students are hardly confronted with reality, with actual clients and practices. At IDE, I was working on early stage innovation for ING, Red Wing Shoes and Mercedes-Benz.”

During summer vacation, he made a list of cool companies. “On the top of my list was Google X, the lab for disruptive

innovation at Google where they created the self-driving cars, balloon powered internet and autonomous delivery drones. After a three month graduate internship in the design department of Google X, I got an offer to stay.” Battin is part of a growing force of designers at Google. “Most people think of Google as a software and internet company, but we’re actually very passionate about creating thoughtfully designed hardware products as well. Some of the latest products are the new Google

phone, smart home speakers and virtual reality headsets.”

In terms of strategy, Battin sees a clear difference between Google and Apple. “The mission of Google has always been about organising the world’s information and make it accessible to everybody, not just those who can afford it. Examples are Search, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Translate, Google Scholar and platforms such as Android which is powering 75% of smartphones out there. The last few years,

to extend internet connectivity to people in rural and remote areas worldwide. The master SPD offers a great basis for these kind of challenges.”

Before starting her master Design for Interaction, Eva Muller had already decided to go down under. “I don’t know why, I just wanted to go there. Being there, as an exchange student at the University of

Technology in Sydney, I was surprised that they not only taught their students about retail design and marketing strategies, but also about societal issues and history, such as the history of colonisation in Australia.”During her studies at IDE, Muller missed the social impact of design. “I think students are now learning much more about the skills, knowledge and mindset needed for sustainable leadership.” Muller also learned that she achieved more in research and analyses than in the creative part of the assignments. “Conducting research is a very structured way of work, with clear deadlines. I needed that structure.”

After her graduation and an internship at Storeage retail solutions in Amsterdam, Muller decided to move to Sydney again. “I started on a work-holiday permit. If you want to stay longer, you have to find a company that sponsors you. The company has to proof that there is no Australian person able to do the job and they have to vouch for you: they become responsible for paying your debts. If you lose the job, you lose the permit, unless you find another job within 90 days. When I started, that term was 28 days.” Muller started at 6.2 Innovation Lab, before moving to Deepend design agency. “I learned a lot at both offices, especially on web design and apps,

but I started missing the Delft approach in user experience. I was longing for a more thorough research and analyses, with a broader scope and more impact. I found that at Fjord design and innovation, an international consultancy firm that is part of Accenture. Many of the projects at Fjord are based on an agile, twenty-weeks schedule, starting with six weeks of research. My latest project was for the Australian immigration and border control: how to digitalise import permits. We work for large companies, such as Finnair and Commerzbank, but also on projects in emerging markets. Within Fjord, I was able to follow courses on sustainable leadership. I am not interested in designing wasteful things. I want to work on things that make the world a better place.”

a key focus for us has been to make our products and services available to the next billion users, mainly found in emerging markets where you have new challenges such as connectivity and completely new use cases for the technology. So, in everything we do, we try to understand the different needs of people and adapt to those. Sometimes we encounter problems that are so complicated that we need radical solutions to solve them, such as Project Loon; a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed

“IDE taught me about the whole journey of design”

Aleix Ingles Elias holds a master in Integrated Product Design and is currently employed at the Samsung Centre Europe in London.

that, but I did not want to become a “CAD monkey”. You know what that is? Someone really good at translating an idea into reality. Usually the direction is given by an art director but cannot imagine how difficult is to make it reality. They provide sketches and someone else develops it properly to manufacture. They get the credit though and that’s not a nice feeling. People doing these jobs are good practicing engineering but doesn’t know a whole lot about aesthetics and emotion, and that’s what Aleix loved. “I wanted to have more clues and insight on how to come up with an idea that would be useful and beautiful, and how to turn it into a prototype.”

Aleix compared different design schools and chose IDE. “At Elisava, we focused on one aspect: the design itself. I felt that I was missing some basic skills, such as project management. I liked IDE because the master programme covers the whole journey from research, to ideation, prototyping, and manufacturing. I have learned about robotics, advanced sketching, model making and organisation. Delft is also a great for cross-links with other fields. I collaborated with the Nuna 3 solar team for a while as one of my flatmates was the aerodynamics expert and had great interest.”

What Aleix missed in his master programme, was a good talk about the aesthetics of a design. “We never talked about the right looks. On the other hand, I believe professional designers will talk about that anyway. This is an attitude that you have to have, you have to have it inside you, so maybe there’s no need to spend college hours on it, but surely it would help to get better at it.”

After graduating in Delft, he worked for design offices GP designers in Vienna (Austria) and Decathlon design in Lille (France). Then he moved to London and worked at Tangerine, the former design agency of Jonathan Ive, chief design officer at Apple. After that Aleix spent almost five years at Sony Design Center Europe and he got the chance to live five months in Tokyo to work on very interesting projects at the HQ offices: ”I now work as design manager and lead industrial designer at Samsung. I am still in contact with people I have met in Delft, even attended some weddings. I am proud to have studied at IDE.” 3  samsung.com

Before coming to Delft, Aleix Ingles Elias graduated at the Elisava school of design and engineering in Barcelona. “They offer programmes in design, fashion and architecture. I studied design engineering.” During his studies in Barcelona, Aleix already gained some working experience. “I worked for a design office that makes purely aesthetic products for a niche high end furniture and accessories market. After my graduation in Barcelona, I worked for a company designing parts for manufacturing from cars, to planes or trains, really technical stuff. I became quite good at

“One of the biggest changes is that we moved the elective space from the first year to the third semester. Students suffered from stressful logistics, feeling forced to meet for group assignments during breaks and in the evening. We believe this will be a big relieve for many students. Also new is what we call the IDE Academy: workshops of one day during which students learn about basic skills, such as graphic design, sketching or observational research. Although many of these should be mastered already when students start their master, we do see a need for brushing up these skills because of the very different backgrounds of our students.

Another issue that kept coming back in enquiries was the impossibility of doing an internship. We solved this by rescheduling all obligatory courses to the first and second semester, leaving the third semester fully elective. With our coaching, students can propose their own learning goals, such as an internship or a foreign exchange programme. This has also opened the door for enabling our students to contribute to research programmes. We are world-famous for our scientific design research. With more than thirty professors and over

one hundred PhD candidates, IDE makes a significant contribution to the development of design knowledge. We want to offer students the possibility to collaborate with these researchers.

We will enable students to participate in the Delft Design Labs programme, where research will be conducted on thematic subjects like the museum experience, the future of traveling and food design. The labs host consortia of academic research institutes and companies, such as a lab on cardiology with Philips Healthcare, and a lab called Big Picture lab, about major issues in society. We have high expectations of this mix of academic research and what our students refer to as ‘the real world’. We still offer our students the freedom of graduating on an assignment for a certain company, but we believe that graduating in a consortium provides an excellent preparation for what we consider to be a crucial aspect in the role of the future industrial design engineer: advising in a more independent role, taking responsibility for what is designed and manufactured.” 3

SAVE THE DATEThe master lunch lectures will be in the lecture hall Joost van der Grinten, the following dates:- SPD: 21 November- DfI: 22 November- IPD: 24 November
