PPrreessiiddeenntt…… reetings everyone! Those of you who live at higher elevations – I hope you
survived the May snow storms. Typical southern foothills weather…. you need snowshoes, rubber boots and sandals – all on the same day.
To all my wife’s quilting friends: You laugh when she tells you it’s easy to keep up with all the sewing, you only feed your husband once every 3 days. Personally, I am not laughing, but I have developed an appreciation for all the fine food served by Threepoint Kitchen & Catering. Those of you who only see food at home served once every 3 days can understand my stress and the sense of urgency to find the right person to manage Threepoint Kitchen & Catering. The Gods were with us and I had the pleasure of meeting Kathryn Boyle. Kathryn has a diploma in Professional Cooking (Honors) from SAIT. She has approximately 17 years experience in the food-service industry. She has managed restaurants in England, Ireland then Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Please join me in welcoming Kathryn as the Manager of Threepoint Kitchen & Catering. I can now relax with Kathryn in charge.
As our busy season approaches, event committees are in full swing with the Fair Book being distributed, Race committee work bees and plans for Rodeo progressing. Registrations are coming in every day for the Millarville Run to the Farmers’ Market Half Marathon. This brand new event coincides with the opening day of the 30th season of the Farmers’ Market on June 16th, fast approaching. Hold on to your hats and get ready for a super season.

very year, each 4-H club reserves a day at year-end to showcase their projects. For Millarville
Saddle Sores and most other horse clubs, we have a “mini-show”, with a variety of classes to
show off our horses. This year, the classes were Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Western
Equitation, Trail, English Pleasure, and English Equitation for the Light Horse Project kids, and
a roping demonstration from our Ranch Project. Our show judges were Ryan Smith for the flat classes and Steve Dunham for trail. The
night before, we had a gymkhana to highlight the Rodeo Project and the Light Horse Project. The gymkhana included barrel racing,
pole bending, stakes, and thread the needle. The Rodeo Project kids also did goat-tying on a live goat. For a Grand Entry for the
Achievement Day, Aimee Michaelis sang the National Anthem, while Robin Knol, Kayla Knol, Nevada Rowe, Dani-Marie Waite, Megan
Rawn, and Shaelynn Brogden all carried flags while riding their horses. Afterwards, we had a banquet to announce the trail results and
the awards for the year. It was a really busy weekend as we cleaned 16 km of highway for the 4-H Highway Clean-up on Saturday
morning, prior to the gymkhana.
Showmanship is a class in which the rider is on foot and leads the horse through a simple pattern. Club members are judged on how
well the horse is presented and how in sync the member and the horse are. Showmanship is the only class done on foot. Western
Pleasure is a class judged purely on how “pleasurable” the horse looks while under saddle. Western Equitation is a pattern that gets
progressively harder as the levels get higher. It is judged on the rider’s ability to handle the horse. English Pleasure and Equitation are
the same, except they are done in a different set of tack. Trail is a class designed to test the horse’s skills outside of the arena.
Common obstacles include a gate, a bridge, mailboxes, pylons, side-passing over poles, and turning 360˚ in a “box.” Nevada Rowe was
the only Rodeo Project kid. She did a roping demonstration on a cow dummy. We were shown three kinds of loops. Each loop type is
worth a certain amount of points in a competition. She and her horse were very impressive. Nevada finished by roping the dummy and
dragging it out of the ring.
Our banquet was held from 4 pm – 7 pm at the Millarville Racetrack Hall. We started with a delicious potluck supper. After that, we
had a few closing reminders and began the awards. We also said goodbye to our outgoing leaders, Darlene MacDonald and Laurie
Rowe. Jeff Blatz, Alan Newcombe, and Diane McKay will be taking their places next year, along with Jill Oliver, Sylvia Checkley, and
Marilyn Collard (General Leader). We also said goodbye to a lot of our seniors who are moving on to university next year.
Our Sportsmanship award went to Robin Knol, our president. The JC Palmer award went to Natalia Newcombe. The Junior of the Year
was Jackson Collard. The Intermediate of the Year was Julianne Uchytil, and the Senior of the Year was Brittnie Moore. The Most
Improved riders were Martie Blatz, Sierra Beck, and Shaelynn Brogden. The Group 1 high point for gymkhana was Martie Blatz, and the
flat class high point was Julianne Uchytil. The reserve was Julianne Uchytil for gymkhana and Nicole Oliver for flat classes. The Group 2
flat class high point went to Sasha Lewis and
the gymkhana high point went to Brooklyn
Collard. Morgan Mills was reserve high point
champion for the flat classes and gymkhana.
Group 3 flat class high point was Megan
Rawn and the reserve was a tie between
Nevada Rowe and Robin Knol. For the
gymkhana, Megan Rawn won high point and
Nevada Rowe took home reserve high point.
It was a great year for Millarville Saddle
Sores and I can’t wait to see what will
happen next year! For more information on
the 4-H programs for next year, contact
Marilyn Collard at 403-256-1902 or

2012 Fair Chair
e’re all waiting eagerly for the start of the
Millarville Farmers’ Market. Opening
day is June 16th, 9am – 2pm. Plan to
come at 9 to cheer on the finishers of the inaugural
Millarville “Run to the Farmers’ Market” Half
Marathon.
I know that I look forward most to fresh food from
right here in Alberta. We have many of our favourite
returning farmers and vendors who will have lots of
new products to try. I am also looking forward to
what our new vendors have to offer. Be sure to look
for Banuka Bakery - flat breads and Middle Eastern
treats and Little Purple Apple - a Saskatoon berry
orchard from Indus - will be bringing many Saskatoon
berry products, as well as fresh berries when they’re
ready. BITE Beef, Crowsnest Coffee Company, Korean
BBQ, Kodiak Smoked Salmon, Meadow Creek
Sausage- specialty sausage, Stoked Oats – super-
charged oatmeal, Make Cheese - cheese making kits,
will all add to the variety of our Market. For crafts
and artisans, there are lots of new vendors - many of
them part-time so you will have to check out the
entire market each time you visit so you are sure not
to miss anything.
Sarah and Fred
from Cayley
Colony have
retired from the
Market. They
have been at the
Market right from
the beginning for
a total of 29 seasons of early mornings here at
Millarville. Fred’s jokes, bugging, and questions were
always something to look forward to. Sarah’s bright
shining face, lovely hugs, and awesome produce will
certainly be missed by me and I’m sure many of you.
I expect they’ll be by to check that we are still doing a
good job.
We’re also adding some great
Food Ambassador Classes this
season. Learning about food
and developing cooking skills
are essential to good health and
food security. Learn from one
of our expert instructors and
then share it with your friends.
Classes begin at 9:30 am in our
hall kitchen and are
approximately 3 hrs. Cost is $60 + GST per person.
Fees include instruction and ingredients. Meet your
class, tootle through the market, learn, cook,
eat….take home some lasting food skills. Sign up by
calling 403-931-3411.
June 23- Make Samosas- join Shamm’s Kitchen in a
Northern Indian cooking and eating experience. Learn
about the spices and flavours through making these
savory favourites.
July 14- Preserving skills- learn to make a fruit jam,
pepper jelly, and gourmet mustard from local
condiment guru Pam Vipond. Skills learned can be
transferred to all kinds of ingredients.
August 11- Introductory cheese making with Ella of

fresh mozzarella cheese. Our instructor, trained at the
Vermont Institute of Artisanal Cheese, will guide you
through the process using regular pasteurized milk from

and grazing, and Seasonal Soups. Check
