FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT

SAM THOMPSON

I have been exicited to see thelarge number of Clubmembers showing up at ourrecent meetings. I think weare fortunate to have a goodmeeting location that so farhas been good to supply ourneeds. Our members seem toenjoy the fellowship.

And this brings us to the timewe remember those who havesuffered illness and sicknessin their lives in recent times.

We are glad to see several onthe mend and doing betterthan in previous months. Inthat group we have CharlieKing who is continuing to healat home under the care of hiswonderful wife, Connie. Shesays he is taking advantage ofher nursing skills and maybehe’ll feel like coming to thenext club meeting.

Sandie and Ralph McCallie areboth getting along better andhope to be back with us at thenext club meeting.

Jeff Smith, son of Jean andHarold, is getting into moreintensive treatment for hislymphoma as he has just goneinto Emory University Hospitalfor at least a month’s staywhere he will get almost dailychemo treatments. He willundergo a stem cell transplantlater this year. We all wishJeff, his family and Harold andJean well in this seriousmedical time.

Club member Rod Hill will goback into the hospital inAugust for some furtherconsultation and possibletreatment as a followup to hisrecent surgery for a tumor onhis pituitary gland. We wishhim well.

Alvin Holt’s wife, Patsy iscontinuing a slow homerecovery from effects of poorblood circulation in her legsand feet. The circulation isnow better so an open woundon her heel is graduallyhealing but she remains inmuch pain. We ask ourmembers to keep Patsy Holtin your prayers.

Jerry Grayson wouldappreciate our Club’s prayers, for his wife, Gwen, as she isfeeling the effects of declininghealth. With Jerry’s help, she isbravely dealing with earlyAlzheimer’s disease.

We all know the power ofprayer and we know now is thetime to put it to work.

We had a very good time atour last meeting listening toRick Minter, of Minter’s Farms, and writer of NASCAR racing, tell about early notables in ourarea. There are more detailsabout some of the legendarydirt and strip racers of thispart of the country on anotherpage in the Crankshaft. Weappreciate Rick giving ussome of the early history ofracing in Georgia and theSouth.

We regret we didn’t get a signin sheet from the last meetingso we can’t individually noteour attendance, but we doappreciate everyone whocame out.

ED SWEHLA’S PROJECT1948 Ford F-1

Editor’s note: I could not hopeto tell Ed’s story with the sameenthusiasm he exhibited in hisnote to me. So, I will let Ed tellhis story.

My Ford Flathead V8 project isa 1948 F1.

I have been on the lookout foran early Ford pickup, since I'mjust a pickup kind of a guy.

Through my manyunderground automotivecontacts( really just KennethYoungblood!) I learned ofanother club member whowas looking to thin hiscollection.

I was all set to buy a similartruck from Kenneth, but beingthe thoughtful, caring personhe is, he suggested I first lookat another truck he knew of.

So one rainy day I stopped into see Howell Fowler at hisbusiness establishment. Heoperates a SALVAGE yard...nota junkyard! Just ask Sue, shewill tell you!

Howell showed me the victim,PROJECT truck I mean. He wasa veritable plethora ofbackground information onthis particular vehicle, havingbeen familiar with it and it'sowners for many years.

After intense negotiations Ibecame the proud owner of abrand new old truck. Not longafter the deal was struck,Howell delivered it to my backyard, where I hid it behind myschool bus to keep theneighborhood association atbay.

After changing a couple tires, and pumping the other 2 up, Itowed it into my barn/garageto begin work.

I got a new battery (I plan tokeep 6 volts) and commencedtrying to turn it over. Thestarter protested. I took thestarter, and another one

Howell provided, and hadthem put together to makeone good one.

The starter is installed, newcables have been purchased, and that is where things standso far.

This project just lacksfinishing...all it needs iseverything! I am having funwith it, which is the wholepoint to me.

This is my first go-round withFord flatheads, although Ihave restored other vehicles inthe past. I am open to goodadvice, bad advice, sagewisdom, and of course anyhelp in any way!

CLUB MEMBER PROFILEBy Bill Wilson

JIM EAGLE

Jim Eagle, an avid Club #160member, has been around thesouth Atlanta area for a prettylong while, migrating here inthe early ‘60’s from hischildhood home of Rachael,West Virginia. It was alsoabout that time he becamefriends with Richard Grace, asthey both began work at DeltaAirlines in the early ‘60’s andretiring in the early ‘90’s.

It has been during this longfriendship they have helpedeach other buy, haul, build, destroy, restore, sell andotherwise make the most ofthe great love of old cars, more especially Fords.

To illustrate, Jim found the toyand joy of his life in 1980when he bought a ‘51 Ford F-1pickup from a friend, JoelMoss, at Delta. The truck, according to Eagle, had beensitting 10 years and neededquite a bit of work but wasdrive-able. So over the next20 or more years, a littlerefurbishing now and then anda lot of miles were put on it.Jim estimates it has over 200thousand love and work mileson it.

Eagle never got around tochanging the original color ofthe truck and it just aged to anice rust brown, helped alongwith a little primer, as seen in

the picture below. What reallyset it off was in 2007 when his

son in law, who owns a signshop, added the Sanford andSon script. It immediatelybecame a crowd favorite, eventhough it doesn’t have thecomplete script the FredSanford version has. If thereis a parade around, you’lllikely see Jim and the oldtruck wowing the sidewalkgawkers. He says he’s hadhundreds of people gettingtheir picture made with thetruck.

Jim Eagle and Richard Gracehave slowed somewhat inrecent years, as more timehas been needed to take careof family, but both still getaway when possible to buyand sell at major swap meetsin such places as Hershey andCarlisle, Pennsylvania andCharlotte, North Carolina.

Eagle seems to be one ofthese kind who can luck into

Page 5

the dangdest of deals...some30 years ago he was dickeringwith a guy in Conyers for a ‘47Ford convertible andeventually came away with itand a pretty slick ‘50 Mercurytwo door with only 69thousand actual miles. Heremembers the Mercury cameinto the deal for only about200 dollars more than theoriginal Ford deal.

He got the Mercury home, sanded the points, put abattery in and it fired up aftersitting 10 years.

Over the years he hasgradually improved theMercury to where it only needsa little chrome work and aback glass. It obviously was akeeper. He says he hasn’tgotten around to the ‘47 Fordconvertible yet. How manytimes have we heard that oneand are likely to hear itagain?!

Jim Eagle is a true blueconnoisseur of the Early FordV8 and we’re happy to givehim this month’s “ping” of theCrankshaft.

MINTER SHEDS LIGHT ON THE SOUTH’S RACING HISTORY

Rick Minter, well knownsoutheastern writer onNASCAR, regaled theattendees of our June meetingwith tales of early racing in theSouth.

Meanwhile, Rex White, amember of RG #160 satnearby as much the historyinvolved White, himself. Whiteis probably one of the leastknown and at the same timemost accomplished racers inNASCAR history.

Minter also told of such driversas Ed Samples, who I alwaysthought owned a cardealership in Atlanta, butfound out he won a NationalChampionship in 1946, BillFrance, Mr. NASCAR and Rex

Rick Minter, right, swapsstories with Club membersHowell Fowler, left, KennethYoungblood, next and RexWhite.

White, himself a member ofthe NASCAR Hall of Fame.

We’ll hear more next monthabout Rex White when Minterdoes a special guest profile onRex White for The Crankshaft.

Minter also lamented the factthat so many of the old andhistoric race tracks are justthat: history. He recalledtracks such as the famousLakewood facility at Atlantaand lesser known dirt ovals insuch well known places asFairburn, Zebulon, Griffin,Senoia, Douglasville and evenas far away as Macon andByron, and north to Rome, where wannabe racers cuttheir teeth, but only a fewwould make it to NASCAR.

THEY’RE STILL OUTTHERE, FOLKS….

This ‘50 Ford is one of 25 oldcars being sold in an estateauction July 22 at Pitts, Ga.,near Cordele. Bart Walton, afriend of the Editor of theCrankshaft, can be contactedfor more details at 863-812-7629. There are alsothousands of NOS parts andold mechanic tools in thegrouping.
