THe PeRfeCT eNvIRONMeNT fOR SUCCeSSeveryone at Yorkshire Copper Tube was delighted to hear that we had been awarded the environment Management System standard ISO14001 in April this year.

The announcement came following a rigorous onsite assessment by BSI, who specifically

commented on the improvements made recently.

We would like to extend special thanks to Stan Hawkins, Terry Burden, Keith Colgan, Gerry Belger and Paul Gale for their tireless efforts in improving the housekeeping in the external areas.

The internal ISO14001 team included Gary Leeson, Jez Alston, Joe Lambert and Alan Olgilvie, who worked together to spearhead the project that led to the award.

This is the latest in the line of environmental accolades for Yorkshire Copper Tube. In March this year, we hosted a special event, attended by the The environment Network (TeN), to talk about our efforts in energy saving and resource management.

A factory tour concluded the event and we received fantastic feedback from everyone that attended.

We are extremely proud of our environmental efforts here at Yorkshire Copper Tube. In 2010 we were runners-up in the ‘Best environmental Practice’ at the North West Business Awards and in 2009 we clinched ‘Best Contribution to the environment’ in the Knowsley Business Awards.

In January we embarked on an on-going Health and Safety training programme called Advancing Safety Culture, which was kick-started with a Health and Safety Walk and Talk initiative.

We understand that the key to the success of any project is to ensure that everyone understands it and knows how important their personal contribution is.

Management underwent training to introduce the Walk and Talk philosophy into their daily working lives. following this they went out onto the shop floor to engage with and talk to employees and have open and honest conversations about how well processes worked and discuss any ideas for improvements.

Action plans were then devised and will be carried out, and updated, in an on-going process of communication between staff and management.

We are already seeing a very positive response to the programme – look out for more updates in the next edition of Tube Talk.

your coPPer queSTionS anSWeredq. is copper a toxic metal?A. On the contrary, copper is one of a small group of metals which are essential to human health and it plays a vital role in our metabolism. for example, most people are aware that we require iron in our bodies to prevent anaemia - but did you know that, without copper, our bodies would be unable to absorb the iron? Healthy adults typically have between 1.4 and 2.1mg of copper per kilo of body weight.

q. is there a recommended daily level of copper?A. It is well known that we need iron in our diet to prevent anaemia and many people take iron supplements, yet without copper in the body, the iron would be useless. The World Health Organisation recommends a daily intake of 2.0-3.0mg per day of copper to maintain normal health, but this is not always achieved in many typical Western diets.

q. Will too much copper in my diet make me ill?A. In a word – no. People with a rare hereditary condition known as Wilson’s Disease may be at risk because their bodies cannot naturally excrete copper, so it may accumulate in the liver. However, any excess copper ingested by healthy humans is readily removed by the body’s natural processes. Our capacity to reject excess copper from our bodies is such that there are no recorded cases of chronic copper poisoning in healthy people.

q. So how do i ensure i’m getting enough copper in my diet?A. Most people will ingest a small amount of copper from drinking water supplied though copper pipes but this is not enough to meet the daily intake recommended by the World Health Organisation. Many types of nuts, seeds (especially poppy and sunflower), chickpeas, liver, oysters (even chocolate!) are relatively rich in copper, whilst cereals, meat and fish generally contain sufficient copper to provide up to 50% of the required copper intake from a balanced diet. So there’s no need to chew on a copper tube in order to stay healthy!

Charity fundraising champion and Yorkshire Copper Tube machine operator Tim Rice-Reddin recently visited Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Liverpool to hand over £1000 that he had raised with his colleagues. After years of fundraising for various charities Tim turned his attention to Zoe’s Place, which offers palliative, respite and terminal care for babies and infants.Generous team mates chipped into a bonus ball scheme to raise the cash and Tim handed the proceeds to Zoe’s Place Community fundraising Manager David Wilde in Spring.

Let’s hope this taste of success spurs them on to win again in the years ahead.

one of our longest serving copper connoisseurs retired from the company in early Spring following a successful career in the industry.

Jack Wallace joined Yorkshire Copper Tube in 1988 and quickly worked his way up the ranks to become our UK Sales Director.

As well as being hugely respected by all at Yorkshire, he is very well known in the industry. He sat on the UK Copper Board for many years and was Chairman during 2008.
