This PowerPoint contains some basic information which will help improve usage of technology on
campus. Please take the time to review all the information presented. The PowerPoint is provided
for beginner and advanced users who may wish to get a head start on orientation day. If you do
not feel comfortable making these adjustments you can elect to wait until laptop check during
orientation. Put in presentation mode to use hyperlinks. Use the arrows to navigate the
presentation.
SOFTWARE REQUIRED FOR WIRELESS ACCESS
The following software is needed to access the wireless network on campus:
• Only Windows Vista/7/8 is supported for use on campus.
• Windows XP CANNOT be used and is not supported.
• Supported Browsers for Windows:
• Internet Explorer
• Mozilla Firefox (Most Recommended)
• Google Chrome
Having more than one browser is recommended.
• Anti virus is required on campus.
• Windows users can use free AV software from Avast!, Microsoft Security Essentials
(recommended) or some other vendor.
• Windows 8 and 8.1 comes with Windows Defender built in and does not need additional anti
virus protection.
• OS X 10.10 Yosemite is supported with some caveats.
• Yosemite is known to cause issues with the NBME and COMAT browsers. When taking these style of exams
it is crucial to close ALL applications and kill the process for image capture extension in the activity monitor.
• Yosemite has DNS lookup issues; i.e. not able to resolve names like google.com. This has some implications
for uploading exam files from Examsoft’s SofTest.
• Since Yosemite was released with lots of bugs, it is crucial to apply updates issued from Apple.
• OS X 10.9 Mavericks is supported.
• OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is supported.
• OS X 10.7 Lion users MUST install 10.7.4+ combo update.
• Highly recommended is to keep both Windows or OS X updated with the current patches and security
updates. Combo update 10.7.4 or newer addresses flaws in OS X Lion that prevented it from working on the
wireless network. Ideally users should install the update prior to orientation day. DO NOT install the
Thunderbolt 1.2 update as it is currently causing system instability and in some cases, kernel panics.
• Users of Mac OS 10.6 and earlier.
• OS X 10.5 is NOT supported by Examsoft and 10.6 may become unsupported in the near future and should
upgrade to at least 10.7.4
• Apple periodically releases new operating systems. It is advised that students do not upgrade to the newer
version. It WILL NOT be compatible with Examsoft SofTest and may cause issues with other testing
software.
• Supported Browsers for Mac:
• Safari
• Mozilla Firefox (Most Recommended)
• Google Chrome
Mac users are encourage to use ClamAV for Mac: http://www.clamxav.com/

NOTE ON SKYPE AND OTHER PEER TO PEER
APPLICATIONS
Applications that use peer to peer protocol are prohibited on campus. Touro IT has a three strikes policy. After the third strike, you will be permanently banned from the wireless network. Remediation through student services is required before wireless access is restored.
Prohibited applications include Skype, Bittorrent, Limewire, Frostwire, Vuse and similar type applications.
Steam and similar applications are also prohibited because their traffic looks like p2p. Auto start upon log-in should be disabled for this type of application.
Disabling these applications from starting up automatically or upon account log-on is acceptable; completely removing p2p applications is preferred.

NOTES ON EXAMSOFT SOFTEST
Examsoft is supported on the following platforms:
Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista
* Microsoft is releasing Windows 10 in August, DO NOT upgrade. It is known to not be compatible with Examsoft’s SofTest at this time.
OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), OS X 10.9 (Mavericks), OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), OS X 10.7 (Lion).
* Apple periodically releases new operating system versions. It is recommended not to upgrade when Apple releases a new OS immediately. We will issue a statement when the new version of the OS is supported by Examsoft. In recent years, there have many bugs in newly released versions of OS X that created issues for students such as, once compatible applications being removed, not able to get on the wireless, extremely slow performance on certain models of macbooks or not being able to take an exam.
NOTES ON EXAMSOFT SOFTEST
ExamSoft highly recommends disabling your AntiVirus before taking an exam and re-
enabling it after the exam.
Please refer to this online documentation from ExamSoft

NOTES ON EXAMSOFT SOFTEST
For more trouble free exam taking on exam day, the recommendation is to reboot
your computer on the morning of the exam and shutting down all applications. This
advice goes for both Windows and Mac users.
In the past, we have experienced various issues with computers that have been
operating for a week(s) without reboot.

DON’T LIKE WINDOWS 8 START SCREEN?
If you don’t like the Windows 8 interface, you are not alone. For those that have a particular disdain, one of the following may give you some relief:
Classic Shell: http://www.classicshell.net/
This is freeware and open source software. Crowd sourced, forum based support.
Start8: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/
This software is non-free, nor open source. Its cost is minimal at $4.99. Does provide end user support.
Microsoft released Windows 8.1 pack. It will return some functionality; although many will probably prefer one of the other solutions.
Touro does not provide any support for these solutions. As such, if you are interested in these solutions, it is in your best interest to do research and pick the solution that augments your workflow. Any technical support issues should be raised to those providing the software.
