Tucana Theme Monday 18th May Wellbeing Week

PSHE will be our main focus this week, including everything from mental wellness to physical fitness, we want to ensure

you are feeling the best you possible can! Let’s start with one very important quality – kindness.

Your task today is to make a list of seven kind things you can

do for someone else. This could be for those who live in your household (e.g. do the washing up one evening, help tidy the house, read with your brother or sister) or for people you don’t get to see every day (draw a picture or write a letter for a

friend). Each day do one of the seven kind things from your list.

Tuesday 19th May Make a playlist of your favourite feel-good music. Keep adding to the playlist every day as you think of more music that makes you feel happy. Every day, spend some time dancing to music from your playlist. Upload your playlists to our FROG site so we can add some of your happy tunes to our Tucana playlist. One of our all-time happy songs – ‘Friend Like Me’ from Aladdin.

Wednesday 20th May As you know, we love Harry Potter and we love to keep fit and healthy. Let’s mix the two together and today complete a Potter inspired yoga session. Cosmic Yoga is a fantastic way to focus your mind whilst having some fun. You can find the session at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-BS87NTV5I&vl=en

Thursday 21st May National Smile Month (18th May – 18th June) Did you know National Smile Month is the largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health? To help ensure we develop and maintain a healthy mouth, we are encouraged to do three key things:

• Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste.

• Cut down on how much sugary food and drink you have, and how often you have them.

• When we are allowed to do so, visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.

Aside from the health benefits, the campaign also channels positivity and promotes the true value of a smile. A smile can not only improve your mood, but can also boost the mood of those around you.

We would like you to create a poem all about smiling: the style poem is up to you, from acrostic to rhyme, the choice is yours!

Post your poems to FROG and make us smile 😊

Friday 15th May Do you remember the different types of teeth? What are their functions? Click on the link below and then complete the activity. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z27kng8/articles/zsp76yc

Important Everybody in our class is now on Frog which is great, and I have received messages/work from many of you. Next time you are on the Frog, please send

me a message on what you are doing to stay positive during the lockdown. I

would like to make something with these messages. Monday 18th May Geography Use the website below to find out key details about the River Humber – our nearest major river. https://primaryfacts.com/2856/river-humber-facts-and-information/ Produce a short factfile that gives key information about it, such as;

- What it looks like (picture from map) - How long it is - Which sea it flows into - Where is its source? - What towns/cities lie on its banks? - What is the river used for? - Any famous landmarks along it?

Tuesday 19th May Science The next science topic we will be studying is evolution and inheritance. Over the coming weeks will analyse and investigate how living things have changed over time, how animals and plants have adapted to suit their environment and how this adaptation had led to evolution. To begin with what does inheritance mean? Watch the following video and make notes: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvhhvcw/articles/zp9f4qt Certain traits and characteristics can be passed from parents to offspring. These can include: hair colour, eye colour, nose shape, mouth shape, build, knobbly knees, the ability to roll your tongue, second toe longer than the big toe and so on. Another key term we need to consider is variation – this occurs between generations, as although offspring may have some similar characteristics to its parents, it will also have many different characteristics. This is called variation Look closely at the following image: 1.Do the children in the photo have any characteristics that are similar to their parents? Make a list of any similar characteristics you can see. 2.In what ways does their appearance vary from that of their parents? Describe some of their unique characteristics. 3.Can you think of some characteristics you have that are not inherited? You have some characteristics that have developed over time because of the way you are raised by your

family, the food that you eat and many other factors. Describe some of your own characteristics that you think are not inherited, suggesting what factors be may responsible.

Wednesday 20th May Art Thank you to everyone who sent me pictures of their H20 artwork, I can’t believe how amazing they all look! There are lots more artists who have used water as a key theme in their paintings. One of the most famous British artists is David Hockney. Look at his painting below.

- How does the painting make you feel? - How do you think this ‘feeling’ has been created?

Task Try to recreate this picture with particular emphasis on the movement of the water again. Look at other ways that Hockney painted water – maybe you could try this style instead?

Thursday 21st May RE Watch this video first http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/ In Hindusim, the River Ganges is regarded as a sacred river.

Now watch the clip below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4lSnFCnGmg

1. Why do people bathe in the Ganges? 2. How do they describe what it feels like? 3. What name is given to this gathering? 4. Which places are popular to visit during this gathering? 5. How do parents treat their children after they have been on a visit to the Ganges?

Friday 22nd May Computer Science Today I would like you to research key computer science terms. First, before you begin your research, discuss your knowledge of the following terms with somebody in your house.

• Algorithms

• Debug

• Coding

• Search Engine

• Variables

• Programme

Are there any of these terms that you can already explain? Now research the terms and create definitions for them. Note – Some of these words may have more than one meaning. You need to make sure you are finding the definition that is about computing.

Science Charles Darwin was one of the most important people who ever put forward ideas on how species evolved and changed over millions of years. Start by watching this video, then make a fact file about his life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUZeywlId_s

Art Now use some of the ideas you have learnt to produce a series of pictures to show how one animal might have evolved into another.

This picture gives us an impression how we as humans might have evolved. Do you think it’s true? Might there be another explanation? Task Now it’s your turn to consider how an animal might have changed. Select one of the animals below, then slightly adapt it over a series of 5-6 pictures by changing a small part of it each time. By the final picture, it should look like a modern day animal that is easily recognisable.

PE – Yoga https://www.youtube.com/user/CosmicKidsYoga 1. In yoga, there is a pose for everything in the world, whether it is an animal, a tree, or an airplane, and we can do it with our body.

2. Thousands of years ago, the ancient yogis lived in the forest, the mountains, and the caves of India. They observed their environment, and saw how the animals and nature moved in perfect harmony. They imitated the movements of the animals, the trees, the mountains, and even the movements of the stars, and created a wonderful technique that is called yoga.

Page 11: Tucana Theme...2020/05/18  · encouraged to do three key things: • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. • Cut down

3. Yoga is a way to exercise our bodies, our breath, and our minds all at the same time. Yoga makes us feel great!

4. Yoga is a very ancient science that helps us to develop flexibility and strength in our bodies, and happiness and peace in our mind.

5. Yoga is a practice and philosophy that teaches that happiness is our natural state. When the body and the mind are out of balance, we do not feel this happiness.

With the help of yoga poses, breathing exercises, and focusing within, we bring back this harmony to our body and mind, and come back to this natural state of happiness.

Task – Try out a set of moves and see if it affects the way you feel. Dies it affect your heart rate? What about your breathing? Do you feel calmer?

How is Hinduism different from other faiths?

Hinduism has no founder, single teacher nor any prophets. Hinduism is not a Single Religion. Hinduism is the practices of a variety of different religious groups which come out of India.

What do Hindus believe?

For many Hindus, religion is a matter of practice rather than of beliefs. It's more what you do, than what you believe. Hindus believe in a universal soul or God called Brahman. Brahman takes on many forms that some Hindus worship as gods or goddesses in their own right. Hindus believe that there is a part of Brahman in everyone and this is called the Atman.

Hindus believe in reincarnation - a belief that the soul is eternal and lives many lifetimes, in one body after another. The soul is sometimes born in a human body, sometimes in an animal body and sometimes in a plant body etc.. Hindus believe that all forms of life contain a soul, and all souls have the chance to experience life in different forms.

Samsara means going through the cycle of repeated births and deaths (reincarnation). Hindus believe that existence of this cycle is governed by Karma.

What is Karma?

Hindus believe that the soul passes through a cycle of successive lives and its next incarnation is always dependent on how the previous life was lived. (Similar to Buddhist beliefs) Karma is the cause of our particular destiny. Misfortunes in our present life are the result of acts that we have committed in the past. In the same way, our actions in our present lives will determine our fate in the lives that follow. Hindus therefore aim to live in a way that will cause each of their lives to be better than the life before

What is Moksha?

The spiritual goal of a Hindu is to become one with Brahma. This freedom is referred to as moksha. Until moksha is achieved, a Hindu believes that he/she will be repeatedly reincarnated in order that he/she may work towards self-realization of the truth (the truth being that only Brahman exists, nothing else).

Page 13: Tucana Theme...2020/05/18  · encouraged to do three key things: • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. • Cut down

Task

Think about your own beliefs – is there anything you feel you share with the beliefs of Hinduism? If you were to create 3 gods for your own belief system, what would they control? Maybe there would be a Protector god – for family and friends? Think carefully about what means the most to you in your life. Are material things (eg; money / phones / games consoles / latest trainers, etc) most important? If not, what would be? Draw up your 3 gods onto a poster and explain what they have the power to control.
