This past summer, Tucson Parks and

Recreation was recognized as a 2014 Playful City USA honoree. We are proud to have been one of the fi rst to be recognized back in 2007 and pleased to have continued that designation over the past eight years. It is a testament to our staff’s dedication to serving

the community and bringing play to Tucson. As we head towards fall and all the seasonal fun that it brings, I refl ect back on the great summer memories that were created with our families and friends. I would like to extend a special thank you to our Summer Splash sponsors this summer, M3 Engineering and Technology Corporation and The Association of Pool and Spa Professionals. A number of Tucson families were able to cool off, play, or learn to swim at our pools this summer. Parks and Recreation still needs the support of public and private donors to open additional pools for swim lessons next summer. Find more information at www.tucsonparks.org. As the kids head back to school, don’t forget, at Tucson Parks and Recreation the fun doesn’t stop. Here is a look ahead to our fall season with a few highlights to mark on your calendar:• City pools will be free and open to the public on Wednesday, July 30th during normal pool hours in celebration of Tucson’s Birthday. • On Wednesday, August 20 - Tucson’s 239th Birthday, enjoy a Flag Raising Ceremony from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Presidio San Augustín del Tucson located at 133 W. Tucson Blvd. • Saturday, October 25 - The Halloween Boo Bash at Clements Regional Center and Lincoln Park, 8155 E. Poinciana Dr. from 4-8 p.m. Enjoy a haunted house, carnival games, face painting, and a haunted hay ride. Cost is $3. • Saturday, November 15th - The Ninth Annual Family Festival in the Park will take place in Reid Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include: fun games, displays, demonstrations and entertainment! Cost is free!• Saturday and Sunday, November 29-30 - Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in Reid Park. This Thanksgiving weekend fair has been a tradition for many holiday shoppers for over twenty years. Stroll through the park and visit with artisans from Southern Arizona selling their handcrafted wares, and enjoy food and refreshments from local vendors.

Leisure opportunities are bountiful on a year-round basis with Tucson Parks and Recreation. Check out all the leisure classes we have to offer throughout this guide. Register and try something new this fall or continue to develop new skills in an activity you already enjoy. Please call to reserve a ramada in one of our beautiful parks for your next birthday party, picnic or family outing, and rental options also available for wedding receptions, meetings, and sports events. The Reid Park Rose Garden, which received the Garden of the Year award from the American Rose Society in 2012, will be in full bloom again in October and November. very skilled and very patient with students who are not always very talented. These

"Little Movers and Shakers is an outstanding

program. My son is 2 and we have

been regulars since he was 6 months old. It has been a great place for him to learn to move around and walk and run (he never

stops now!) We love the social aspect

of the program and the skills it teaches.

The instructors love what they do

and always interact with the kids and parents. There is a regular routine

for each class so if you switch classes

or come twice a week like we do you

feel right at home and know what to

expect."

The Presidio San Agustín del Tucson is a re-creation of the northeast corner of the original 1775 Spanish presidio or fort. A self-guided tour explains features including a munitions room, torreón (tower), commissary, and living space for soldiers and their families. An open Hohokam pit house is found on site, along with an interpretation of features that came before the Hohokam period.

A beautiful mural depicts early residents of the Presidio. A Territorial-era plaza, zaguán (breezeway), and Sonoran-style streetscape are also featured. Original period row houses along Court Street contain an exhibit space and gift shop. Natural landscaping refl ecting the period surrounds the outside walls, as well as a remnant of a boarding house that was located on the site. The presidio wall can also be traced as it existed downtown by following “adobes” set along the former wall path.

Individuals interested in the activities at the Presidio should contact Lupita through the

Presidio at 837-8119 or via email at:
