THE SCHOOLTraining healthy dancers...mind and bodyThe Syracuse School of Dance, under the direction of PattyBrundage and Mary Pat D’Angelo, offers quality training in Ballet, Pointe, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Hip-Hop, and Musical Theater to children, teens and adults of all ages and skill levels. The philosophy at SSD is that one can train a dancer, mind and body...that people thrive in positive and nurturingenvironments.The teachers are experienced professionalspossessing the unique ability of bringing out creative self-awareness in their students through personal attention in a relaxing, non-competitive atmosphere. Students at the Schoolstart with Pre Ballet classes and progress to concentrated trainingin the other dance forms. Adult classes offer an appreciation ofdance and an opportunity to maintain a flexible, strong andexpressive body. Classes are diversified, challenging and designedto develop coordination, muscular strength, correct posture andflexibility in conjunction with technical skills and a sensitiveawareness for creative bodily expression.

WINTER CLELBRATIONThis production is a wonderful opportunity for our students to perform adelightful winter celebration of dance for the Syracuse community.Dances are performed in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap and musical theater.Auditions will be September 21st for SSD students only (ages 7 and up),with the performance in December.

THE COMPANYThe Syracuse Contemporary Dance Company (SCDC) wasformed in 1972 and is currently under the direction of Mary PatD’Angelo and Patty Brundage. The Company presents originalchoreography while providing technically advanced dancers anopportunity to perform in a professional setting. Auditions are inJanuary & In Concert 2014 will preform May 17th at SyracuseCivic Center.

THE CURRICULUMPRE-BALLETIntroduces children 3 - 5 years of age to basic Ballet concepts;gentle stretching, and locomotor movements. Students discoverhow their bodies can move; create their own dances, and learn torespond to music and rhythm.

BALLETThe foundation for all other dance forms offers disciplinedtraining in classical ballet style, technique and vocabulary withemphasis on correct body alignment and proper use of weight-bearing muscles and joints.

POINTEThe highest extension of Ballet Style. It is offered to qualifiedstudents as determined by the Directors.

JAZZThe Giordano technique, with emphasis on rhythm,coordination, fast movement, composition, strength and style.

MODERNAn asymmetrical form of Ballet which stresses the torso as thesource of movement with emphasis on creative improvisations,locomotor movement and imaginative exploration of the body in space.

TAPA rythmic dance form based on sound and movement.

HIP HOPMovement that has elements of poppin’, lockin’ and breakin’ aswell as freestyle movement to give students the opportunity todevelop their own sense of style.

MUSICAL THEATERCombining drama, dance and music to prepare students for stageauditions.

FACULTYMARY PAT D’ANGELO, Artistic DirectorA popular, talented and energetic teacher, MaryPat has taught at the SSC since its conception. Sheperformed in musicals for Salt City Playhouse andSyracuse Musical Theatre and choreographed forthe “Festival of Nations”, Jamesville-DeWittSchools, was the creator and director of the DanceWorkshop Ensemble; and participated in theBaldwinsville’s “Arts in School” program. MaryPat also choreographs for ice skaters and has beenpart of the Litz Team Skating Seminars in LakePlacid. A long-time student of LorraineHavercroft and Gus Giordano (Chicago), MaryPat has also studied at Le Ballet Jazz, Montreal,and Alvin Ailey, New York City. She will teachJazz and Ballet, and serve as Artistic Director ofthe Syracuse Contemporary Dance Company.

LOUISE BOVALouise has taught at the Syracuse School of Dance for many years and is a memberof the SSC. She also studied Ballet and Jazz at the NYS Ballet Association where shestudied Ballet with Trinette Singleton (Joffrey Ballet), Glenn Gilmour (NationalBallet of Canada), and Jazz with Eva VonGencsy (Les Grandes Ballets Canadiens).She will teach Ballet, Jazz andModern.

LAURIE DEYOLaurie has taught, choreographed, and performed with SSD and the SyracuseContemporary Dance Company since 1984. She was dance faculty with SyracuseUniversity for 15 years and has her Master’s in Dance and Dance Education fromNYU where she studied with members of the Limon, Graham, and CunninghamModern Dance Companies; continued her ballet training at the Joffrey School andwith David Howard and Finis Jhung; and studied jazz at S.T.E. P.’s and other NYCstudios. She has taught modern, ballet, jazz, creative movement for the classroom,tap, and aerobic dance and will be teaching intermediate/advanced and advancedlevel modern at SSD.

LISA POWELLLisa’s dance training includes the Royal Academy of Dance, Dance Educators ofAmerica, the Broadway Dance Company and Steps of New York City. She hastaught in the Syracuse area since 1995 and will be teaching Ballet this year.

HELEN MOOREHelen received her Masters Degree in Education from Syracuse University. She hasstudied dance all her life including Ballet Arts, New York School of Ballet andS.T.E.P.S. and locally. She dances with and has choreographed for the SyracuseContemporary Dance Company. Helen will be teaching Ballet.

PATTY BRUNDAGE, Administrative DirectorPatty received her BA degree in ElementaryEducation while studying dance at Potsdam StateCollege, and completed her graduate studies atSyracuse University. She has studied with LorraineHavercroft locally; Alvin Ailey, New York City,and the NYS Ballet Association Teacher Trainingin Cecchetti Method, Pointe Repertoire, Children’sTraining and Jazz. Patty has taught Ballet, Pointeand Jazz and has been the director of the SyracuseSchool of Dance since its conception. She is aprincipal dancer and choreographer for theSyracuse Contem porary Dance Company and hasperformed and choreographed for local theatregroups including Syracuse Opera, The Talent Co.,Salt City Playhouse, Clay Town Players andCamillus Musicals. She will be teaching Ballet.

BARBARA LENEVEBarbara has studied in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, ballroom, flamenco, hip hop, andmusical theater locally and with Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham, Rennie Harris andGarth Fagen.. She was a Dance major at SUNY Brockport and received herUndergraduate degree in Exercise Science and Dance as well as her Masters ofScience at Syracuse University where she was the Dance Graduate Assistant. Shehas taught performed and choreographed locally and is currently teaching in theDance Minor at Syracuse University. She recently completed all of therequirements for the New York State Teaching Certification in Dance Education.She will be teaching tap and musical theater at SSD.

BRANDON JONESBrandon Jones has been dancing and studying hip hop, musical theater and jazz forthe past 11 years. He has choreographed and taught for the Ballet and DanceCenter, Dance Theater of Syracuse,Dominique’s Dance Creations, Say Yes toEducation, Peaceful Resolution and Lemoyne Upward Bound Summer program.He will be teaching Hip Hop at SSD

CAITLIN O'HARA Caitlin studied dance and choreographed in Syracuse under the guidance ofKathleen Rathbun and Caroline Brackett. She graduated cum laude with a BFA indance performance from Adelphi University in 2009. She has performed works byMartha Graham, Dahlia Corella, Jennifer Muller and Marius Petipa as well asballets including Swan Lake, Dracula, The Sleeping Beauty” and “TheNutcracker”. Since returning to Syracuse she has taught dance at SyracuseChildren's Theater and Redhouse Theater and has performed and choreographedfor Syracuse Contemporary Dance Company. She will be teaching Ballet at SSD.

CRISTINA BATTLE Christina is a graduate of Le Moyne College where she served as HeadChoreographer of the Le Moyne Student Dance Company. She continues to teachand choreograph for the Le Moyne Student Dance Company as well as other localschools and studios. Cristina has been classically trained in ballet, jazz, andmodern. Much of her modern study and training in Syracuse has been under theguidance of Laurie Deyo. Cristina is also a certified Zumba instructor andcontinues to teach locally, as well as travel for workshops and master classes.

POLICIESCLASS PLACEMENT For new students only: OnWednesday, September 4th at 7 pm, a Ballet placement class will be conducted. Adult Division and students under the age of 8 neednot attend. Please call the school in advance to reserve a place in this class.

REFUNDS For medical reasons ONLY; must have writtenverification from doctor within 2 weeks of injury.

SNOWDAY POLICY The decision for class cancellationwill be made by 2 p.m. (if possible) and listed on all major television

stations. When in doubt call the school’s office.CREDITS ANDMAKE-UP CLASSES Credits canbe used only by the enrolled student and only in the form of make-up classes. Make-ups classes cannot be carried into the summersession or be used for tuition credit.

TRIAL CLASS Prepayment of $12.00. This is to try a classonly. We do not have a pay per class policy.
