It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to “Crazy for you”, BMTC’s latest production which I am sure you will enjoy.
I have been involved with this Company since 1972 (Princess Ida if anyone is interested!) and have performed almost every October and February since then – 69 shows by my calculation - until I decided a couple of years ago that the time had come when my inability to remember the words, the music and the moves (and all at the same time!) was becoming an embarrassment - at least to me!
So its 44 years since I first trod the boards in this very theatre; 44 years of Wednesday evenings, 7.30 to 10pm, plus extra Sundays and for those who take the principal parts, another evening most weeks too. And then the dress rehearsal – 1pm to 10pm usually – longer than a day at work!
For me, though, it hasn’t been enough to be just one of the chorus (the musical wallpaper as a friend of mine once described us!) – because as well as very occasionally taking a principal part – The Duke in Patience in 1976 and one of the Flowers of Progress in Utopia Limited in 1985 – I was also a member of the Committee for many years and served as Vice-Chairman for most of them.
The “reward” for all my years with the Company was first to be made an honorary life member and then to be asked to be President – a position which I am enormously honoured to hold.
Why do we do it? That’s a complicated question! For me it’s been the one time of the week when I’ve not been “in charge” - someone else – the Musical Director or the Producer – teaches me and tells me what to do! So it is recreation in its true meaning – re-creation. It’s very social: lifetime friends are made here, it’s very entertaining (at least most of the time!) and it’s very satisfying to go through the whole process of learning new music, putting the production together and then presenting it to you, our loyal audience and being rewarded by you appreciation.
A show like tonight’s doesn’t happen just because the members have faithfully attended weeks of rehearsals. There are countless other things that have to be done to maintain the Company in good health and its HQ in good working order and to put on shows that are as professional as we can possibly make them. It costs around £20,000 to put on a show – an enormous amount of money - which we can only get back when you buy a ticket and come to the show.
So, please, don’t stop supporting this wonderful Company. We want to continue to perform to excellent houses (full ones I hear the Treasurer say!) because we hope it gives you pleasure and it continues to give us pleasure as well as enabling us to pay our bills and bring the next show to you in due course.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
TRIBUTE
Welcome to our latest production - another Andrew Lloyd Webber show with, as usual, some very difficult musical challenges. Some of you may remember the original film with Hayley Mills but this musical version provides us with stunning songs, from beautiful ballads to contemporary rock songs.
Director Karen Hambleton and Musical Director David Blackwell have worked incredibly hard to coach the children’s chorus and what a fantastic job they have done. The children have worked throughout the summer and are absolutely wonderful to listen to. We are very lucky to have such talented youngsters as part of our Company and we appreciate not only their commitment but also that of their parents who’ve been essential in their role of “Mum & Dad’s” taxi service.
We welcome back Holly Twells as ‘Swallow’ and Jessica Paige as ‘Candy’ - two young ladies who are real assets to the Company - as well as new principals, Megan Hambleton and Edward Wileman.
Our Directors often have ‘visions’ and right from the outset Karen knew exactly how she wanted this show to look. The set, unusually for us, is static - but very cleverly designed by Derval Lester and the stage crew to encompass all the different scenes and settings required. In addition, lighting is particularly important in enhancing the different emotions on stage. In order to do this the Committee decided it was time to upgrade our 40 year old lighting system and tonight you will see the results of that decision. It has been a massive investment helped by a substantial grant from Consolidated Charities of Burton on Trent and a smaller grant from Punch Pub Company Community Promise. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them both for their contributions. It has been a steep learning curve in many respects and our lighting team have worked tirelessly over the summer to familiarise themselves with the new kit so all is ready for this week.
Although the adult chorus is not overworked in this production we have enjoyed rehearsals and particularly watching the principal cast develop their roles over the last six months. “Whistle Down The Wind” is a very dramatic and emotional show, and I am confident you will have a thoroughly entertaining evening. The music will probably be more familiar than you imagined!
For this show we have introduced a new on-line booking facility but are still more than happy to take bookings by telephone or email.
Looking forward to February 2018 – something completely different – is “Sister Act”, a very vibrant, joyful and amusing show. Tickets are already available - so don’t delay - if you have enjoyed tonight’s performance please come back and see us again.
Thanks for your support

GLENISE BLANTIt is with great sadness that we report the death of Glenise Blant. Glenise was a founder member of the Burton Operatic Society which she joined in 1951 when it was re-formed after the war years. She was in the first show in February 1952 which was The Gondoliers. She enjoyed performing over the years and her last show was in February 1987 which was The Mikado. During her time as a member she only missed one show despite having three children. She was also a Committee member for a number of years. Once she finished performing, Glenise moved to front of house to join her husband, David, selling soft drinks which they did until 2009. Glenise is the mother of our present Secretary, Annette.

SYNOPSIS
TOWNSPEOPLE
Based on the book of the same title by Mary Hayley Bell, and later produced as a movie in the hands of Richard Attenborough, Whistle Down the Wind is set in a small, deeply religious town in Louisiana of the 1950s. A poor farming family led by father, Boone, and his three children - Swallow, Brat, and Poor Baby - have recently buried their mother and they are still struggling with the grief. As Christmas approaches and the family cannot afford any presents or luxuries, the three children are desperate to find something to hold on to and believe in.
One day, they find a stranger injured and hiding in their run-down barn. In the initial confusion of finding the stranger, Swallow seizes on the idea that he is Jesus Christ and the rumour quickly spreads amongst the children of the town. However, the town is on the lookout for a runaway convict in the area and are urged by their Sheriff to stay vigilant. It seems equally possible that ‘The Man’ could be Jesus, or the escaped convict.
When Candy, a rebellious youth spurned by local boy Amos, learns of the prisoner’s hide-out, she is quick to reveal it to the town and the residents all descend on Boone’s farm. However, mysteriously, ‘The Man’ has disappeared and Boone realises that Swallow still needs him to depend upon and restore her faith in their family unit.
