The proliferation of web business in general and the return of shared computing are laying the foundation for a much changed computing paradigm. Mobile computing, big data and digital social media have accelerated into the mainstream, and internet of things is expected to follow soon. The IT industry has been asking how to adapt to the business model of the digital pure-play enterprises? As a result, massive changes are undergoing on the vendor side of the IT industry. New vendors shoot up and new contract and service delivery types are offered. Some of the questions that arise are: · How much will public cloud infrastructures replace in-house computing? · Is digital social media, big data and internet of things in-house or public cloud services? · How can apps be provided in a multi-platform end-user environment? · How can services front- and back-ends be integrated effectively in this new paradigm? · How can end-user computing be provided with new functions every week? · How can outsourcing vendors on the business side be switched quickly and effectively? · Can Business Intelligence be made useful in an exponential organization? CIOs must understand how this new computing paradigm can boost their company’s competitiveness, and what will happen if they lag behind their peers in technology adoption. Topic: The Digital EcosystemDuring the past 20 years, the IT industry has been gradually adapting to the new digital ecosystem. Some of the questions that arise are:

· How much will public cloud infrastructures replace in-house computing?· Is digital social media, big data and internet of things in-house or public cloud services?· How can apps be provided in a multi-platform end-user environment?· How can services front- and back-ends be integrated effectively in this new paradigm?· How can end-user computing be provided with new functions every week?· How can outsourcing vendors on the business side be switched quickly and effectively?· Can Business Intelligence be made useful in an exponential organization?

CIOs must understand how this new computing paradigm can boost their company’s competitiveness, and what will happen if they lagbehind their peers in technology adoption. They must plan and manage a safe transition, often with an “on the surface, all is grace” expectation from their business and its customers.

Topic:

Large conservative organizations tend to reach the state where their behavior is mostly defined by tradition documented in operations manuals and implemented in legacy IT systems. Their business functionaries tend to judge business transformation opportunities through the prism of rigid compatibility with the legacy “black box”, thus becoming autopilot-driven status quo protectors. Their projects routinely end up in patchy (though expensive) IT solutions still based on legacy business thinking.

In order to be successful in the legacy-dominated enterprise, a business transformation initiative must first recognize the “black box thinking” challenge, and counter it with fresh business architecture starting from the business model re-understanding. The fresh look allows to provide the Business with flexibility unheard of in its old “black boxed” state, e.g. efficient outsourcing of non-core business capabilities, or business process patterns modified by business rules. Defining business rules in the ex-legacy environment is a challenge in its own, as only a sub-set can be found in policy documents, while lots of others must be sourced from legacy processes and even code. Once this foundation re-design work is done, the rest of the renewed EA and further IT solutions can be built on top of it.

The case study presents our experience with successful applying these approaches to a major real life business transformation project accompanied with significant IT re-development.

Topic:Intensification of changes in the economic environment of the organisations has raised a wide-reaching debate about the position of EA in the enterprise and its real impact on the corporate business and organisational development. This presentation argues that the concepts of Business Architecture and Enterprise Architecture (as seen through the TOGAF lens) requires revision and refinement. The authors propose an extended understanding of the subject and discipline of Architecture of Business (AoB) as the means of bringing architectural concepts into the business realm to connect corporate strategy with its target operating model (TOM). Their approach combines a hands-on experience of operational transformation of a multi-billion organisation with a disambiguated experience inherited from technology and utilising the theory of Systems and Business Service Orientation. The session's participants will be introduced to the notion of AoB leading to an optimised TOM for companies of any type and size. The 5-step framework combining AoB with TOM will be discussed.

Can successful brick-and-mortar banks disrupt themselves?Nordea is the largest financial services group in the Nordic region and is a globally systemically important bank. In other words, the bank has done extremely well in the days of brick-and-mortar banking. Roughly two years ago Nordea formed a business unit called Digital Banking, and this unit was tasked both with establishing a lean and agile execution capability that differs markedly from previous project organizations, and with bringing to market next generation digital touch points that could be leveraged to transform Nordea into the leading digital relationship bank in the Nordic region. This journey could not have had the success it has had so far, if existing approaches had been continued. Head of Domain Architecture in Nordea’s Digital Banking, Mikkel Brahm, will share experiences and lessons learned from Nordea’s journey so far concerning reaching out to get help both internally in the bank and externally, thinking out of the box and taking the customer’s perspective, ceasing the energy-draining and more or less permanent reorganization of people into projects, and leaning out and taking charge even when we are not completely in control.

Topic:

The purpose of this paper is to review the management of technology (MOT) discipline in an industrial context, where the framework of TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) is selected to guide technological change, strategic orientation and technology portfolio realignment after a merger of several companies. Architectural views of studied companies do provide interesting observations on employee and corporate self-perception and potential and relevance for new technologies and change. The studied case provides such a platform for experiments in MOT practice and tentative introduction of TOGAF. The study indicate TOGAF is a viable framework for MOT although with shortcomings related to organizational and human aspects on the one side, and core technologies in form of data, systems and networks, on the other side. To the major findings of this paper are issues of potentials for adding to MOT research and body-of-knowledge in reviewing impact of professional / industrial framework implementation and operation. Moreover there is a duality between using and studying frameworks in organizational contexts, and new knowledge derived and used to develop the frameworks further on.

Topic: A radically different perspective on organizingAssumptions underlying orthodox Enterprise Architecture (EA) literature leads to two choices facing practitioners: to either work with tools and techniques which predict and control changes towards pre-determined ends, or to accept chaos. The last three years, MikkelBrahm has been researching into his practice as an Enterprise Architect at the Complexity and Management Centre of the University of Hertfordshire. Through this research Mikkel has compared and contrasted his practice with both orthodox and radically different theories on how we organize what we do in EA. Mikkel will present preliminary findings from his research and will argue that when organizing what we do together, even in the absence of any blueprints or plans, people are always subject to social control towards what wesometimes call civilized behavior. Thus if we abandon the practices prescribed in orthodox EA, chaos does not actually ensue. Mikkel will present a radically different perspective on organizing, and will give examples of how thinking differently about control, repeatability, and predictability opens up opportunities for acting differently also in EA.
