During his racing career, Storm Cat was pretty goodat coming out on top in a close finish, showing the sortof spirit which was to become a feature of hisprogeny=s success story. He won his second start by aneck and three starts later he pushed his nose ahead ofDanzig Connection=s to take the GI Young America S. Unfortunately, he couldn=t quite repeat the displayagainst Tasso in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile, whenhe led virtually everywhere but the finish line. Storm Cat appears to be involved in another verytight finish this year, this time in his role as broodmaresire--and I use the word Aappears@ advisedly. Accordingto the Blood-Horse on Dec. 9, the former Overbrookstar ranks second to A.P. Indy, with Storm Cat=s totalof $14,635,997 lagging just $42,365 behind his rival=s.But, the accompanying small print includes Aas suppliedto The Blood-Horse by The Jockey Club InformationSystems, Inc., earnings exclude monies from Japan andHong Kong.@ (Note: TDN sire lists also do not containearnings from Japan or Hong Kong). I mentioned my puzzlement over this arbitraryexclusion in a TDN piece nearly two years ago: AI guessthat this is done because the prize-money in thosecountries is deemed disproportionate to that in themajority of other countries and can therefore slant thestatistics,@ I suggested. Statistics from the International Federation ofHorseracing Authorities confirm that prize-money inHong Kong and Japan are at a different level. Theaverage prize-money per race in 2012 was equivalent toi110,947 in Hong Kong and i45,851 in Japan, whereas the figures for the U.S. and Canada werei16,136 and i20,013, respectively. But Hong Kongand Japan aren=t the only countries capable ofdistorting the figures. The average for the 320 racesstaged in the United Arab Emirates equated toi103,865. Yet, inconsistently, these races are includedin the Jockey Club=s figures. Cont. p5

Caulfield cont.

This year, Darshaan ranks third on the table behindA.P. Indy and Storm Cat, but he owes nearly $3.5 millionB-virtually a quarter of his total--to the UAEexploits of Sajjhaa. Similarly, the 15th-rankedAcatenango owes $6 million of his total to AnimalKingdom=s victory in the G1 Dubai World Cup.Meadowlake and Arch are other substantialbeneficiaries from the World Cup meeting. If a daughter of Storm Cat had supplied the winner ofone of these fabulously rich prizes in Dubai, the stallionwould have been given the credit, but not if the victorycame in Japan or Hong Kong. It doesn=t make sense!Perhaps it would be preferable if The Jockey Clubprovided two tables, one all inclusive and the otherwithout Japan, Hong Kong or the UAE. The truth is that Storm Cat would currently enjoy ahuge lead on the broodmare table if he received creditfor the tremendous results achieved this year by hisdaughters= Japanese runners. He currently ranks fourthon Japan=s table of broodmare sires, thanks principallyto Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) (G1 JapaneseDerby), Ayusan (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) (G1 Japanese 1,000 Guineas) and the excellent LordKanaloa (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}) (a Group 1winner in the Takamatsunomiya Kinen, Yasuda Kinenand Sprinters S.). With support from their fellow groupwinners Hiraboku Deep (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) andRed Spada (Jpn) (Taiki Shuttle), they have built a totalof -1,922,941,000, which I believe equates to$18,658,470.

Of course, Storm Cat also received a boost of around$1.1 million when Lord Kanaloa thrashed aninternational field of sprinters to record his secondsuccess in the G1 Hong Kong Sprint Sunday. In theprocess, the son of King Kamehameha improved hiscareer figures to an impressive 19-13-5-1. Add all this to the earnings of Storm Cat=s daughters=earnings elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere and youarrive at a staggering total of more than $34,000,000.Not bad for a year=s work! Of course Storm Cat=s broodmare daughters havealso had something of a banner year in the U.S.,enjoying the limelight via the likes of Close Hatches,Sahara Sky, Honor Code, Global View, Govenor Charlie,Tapicat and Noble Tune. Now the name of the verypromising Streaming can be added to the list, followingher triumph in the GI Hollywood Starlet S. on only hersecond start. The last few weeks have seen some spectacularprices for young Group 1-winning fillies and mares, such as Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) (i6,000,000),Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire})(4,000,000gns) and Immortal Verse (Ire)(4,700,000gns). The sky would probably also be thelimit were Streaming ever to be offered for sale. Afterall, she is a granddaughter of Better Than Honour, thebrilliant broodmare whose price soared to $14 millionwhen she was offered at Fasig-Tipton in 2008.

Streaming=s dam Teeming repaid less than $70,000of the $1,500,000 she had cost as a weanling, but shewon three of her four starts as a 4-year-old. Althoughnot in the same class as her Belmont S.-winningsiblings Rags To Riches (A.P. Indy) and Jazil (Seekingthe Gold), she is making amends as a broodmare,Streaming being her fifth winner from five foals. There are similarities between Teeming=s pedigree andthat of RisingTornado, the dam ofthis year=s two-timeGrade I-winning fillyClose Hatches (FirstDefence). Both aredaughters of StormCat and both have thecelebrated Best InShow as their thirddam. Also, theirrespective Grade Iwinners in 2013 were sired by members of the Mr.Prospector male line, Close Hatches being by FirstDefence and Streaming by Smart Strike. As a son of Mr. Prospector, Smart Strike had obviousappeal as a mate for Teeming. For a start, Jazil wassired by another son, Seeking the Gold, andKingmambo, Jade Hunter and Miswaki are other sonsof Mr. Prospector with a Grade I winner to their creditfrom the Best In Show family.

Smart Strike also sired that good filly Denomination,a four-time Grade III winner at up to a mile and aneighth in France and the U.S., from another Storm Catmare. The Smart Strike--Storm Cat partnership also hasanother talented juvenile filly this year in the shape ofFascinating, beaten only half a length by She=s A Tigerin the GI Del Mar Debutante and a length by SecretCompass in the GI Chandelier S.

Stephanie Preston, MS, PhD Equine Soundness and Sports Medicine Program: Many participants in Thoroughbred public auctionsagree that yearling sales participants have becomehyper-focused on the use and subjective opinionscontained on radiograph reports to a point wherebuyers are purchasing reports and opinions rather thanhorses. This has occurred despite mounting scientificevidence [Kane et. al 2003; Cohen et. al 2006; Prestonet. al 2012; Meagher et. al 2013] that very fewabnormal radiographic findings have been scientificallyshown to affect future racing performance, eventhough yearling sales price is reduced by commonabnormalities [Preston et. al 2012]. A case in point for what is lost in this approach ismultiple Grade I winner Flat Out, who captured the GI Cigar Mile last week at age seven. This horse waspurchased for $85,000 mostly because the buyersbelieved in the consignor and the whole-horse. Theradiograph report said ANSF@ throughout, but thebuyer=s vet said the horse had a sesamoid issue.Another potential bidder and friend of the buyersdecided not to bid on the horse because his vet alsofailed the horse during a separate radiograph review. Inthe case of Flat Out, ignoring a lack of pedigree andmultiple negative opinions with no scientific basis led tothe purchase of a whole lot of horse. There are manyother similar stories and the real question is thenwhether these cases are the exceptions or are they infact, the rules? Experiencing this pattern of horsesoutrunning human subjective opinions is what led thisreader to spend seven years obtaining a PhD inveterinary epidemiology and to the belief that onlyreliable scientific research methods can answerimportant soundness questions affecting our horses. On the racing front, there is sharp division over theissue of race-day medication use, particularly Lasix.Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) isknown scientifically to be common and is believed bymany to be performance limiting. Yet, no studies overtime have documented whether the condition reoccursor if there is variation in severity of EIPH or whetherthere is any long-term impact on racing careers[Hinchcliff et. al 2009]. Nonetheless, everyone in U.S.racing has an opinion on the Lasix issue. Preliminary data from a study that is underway[Preston et. al under review] confirms that classificationof the severity of EIPH by grade during a singleexamination is not representative of the grade(s)experienced by most horses during training and racing,or even that particular horse during its career. Likemany health conditions, EIPH is not a static eventduring the career of a racehorse. Further understandingof the dynamic nature of equine health conditions andtheir impact on racing performance is important to fillthe void in the scientific literature.

Against this backdrop of soundness questions ourindustry continues to ignore the fact that we can hardlyget horses to the track while continuing instead toattempt to microscopically predict, without scientificevidence, which horses will race. Figures reported forUS racehorses by The Jockey Club Fact Book on-lineshow a decreasing number of lifetime starts sincebefore 1970, which now averages only six lifetimestarts. Yet, there were no radiograph reports nor Lasixin 1970. Today, in one successful foreign racingjurisdiction where many medications used routinely inthe U.S. are prohibited during training and racing(including Lasix), horses are averaging almost 20lifetime race starts [Preston et. al under review].Although direct comparisons cannot be made withoutfurther studies, the question of what is going on withour (U.S.) racehorses remains. We, as an industry, need to join the world oftransparent scientific study for answers to thesequestions based upon peer-reviewed evidence basedmedical research that focuses on the whole-horsethroughout a dynamic career of many health conditionsand multiple performance failures and successes. Should Racetracks Charge Admission?“Last Wednesday, the Reorganization Board of the New York RacingAssociation approved a 2014 budget that included hikes in admissionfees at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course, from $3 to $5 for thegrandstand, and from $5 to $8 for the clubhouse. The increase isdesigned to offset an expected $1.8 million deficit caused by legacyexpenses and an unexpectedly high tax burden on the revenue fromvideo lottery terminals at NYRA’s third racetrack, Aqueduct.” TeresaGenaro, Forbes

It’s Post Time: At the Big A, Big Art“Aqueduct Racetrack is no one’s idea of an art gallery. But PaulKelleher, a corporate development executive at the New York RacingAssociation, which operates the track, was keen to broaden hiscustomer base and he saw potential. The place is big. It has lots ofwalls. Why not unleash a few street artists and let them do what they dobest: spray-paint?” William Grimes, The New York Times

CHARLES TOWN UNVEILS ‘14 STAKES SCHEDULE Charles Town has released its stakes schedule for2014, which is highlighted by the $1.5-million GII Charles Town Classic Apr. 19 and the newlyupgraded GIII Charles Town Oaks Sept. 20. The CharlesTown Oaks purse has been increased by $100,000 to$500,000 this year. AAs a $500,000 graded race in lateSeptember, it=s our hope that the Charles Town Oakscan have some [GI] Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Sprintimplications going forward.@ Groupie Doll, second in the2011 renewal of the Oaks, has annexed the last tworunnings of the BC F/M Sprint. In total, excluding thenot-yet-finalized West Virginia Breeders= Classics,Charles Town will hold a total of 25 stakes races worth$3.55 million. The 2014 meet begins Jan. 2.
