Topic/Title: Blood Components
Blood
• The only fluid tissue in the human body• Classified as a connective tissue
Blood

Components of Blood
PLASMA (55%)
WHITE BLOOD CELLS & PLATELETS (>1%)
RED BLOOD CELLS (45%)
Components of Blood
FORMED ELEMENTS(Red & White Blood Cells and Platelets)
Blood Plasma
• ~ 90% water• Liquid part of blood–Nutrients–Hormones–Proteins
Formed Elements
• Erythrocytes = red blood cells• Leukocytes = white blood cells• Platelets = clotting cells
Photomicrograph of a Blood Smear
Figure 10.2
Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells)
• Main function = carry oxygen
• Hematocrit = percentage of red blood cells in our body
Anemia• Someone is anemic if they
have:– A lower than normal amount
of red blood cells or– Not enough hemoglobin
• Sickle-cell anemia– Common in African
Americans– Sharp and spiky RBC low
oxygen
Above: Normal RBC
Below: Sickled RBC
Control of Erythrocyte Production
Figure 10.5
White blood cells and platelets:
• Make up less than 1% of the formed elements
• White blood cells (leukocytes) = fight infections
• Platelets = involved with blood clotting and wound repair
Summary
• Summarize what we learned today about blood!
