“Our desire is to have a min-

Noong August 20, 2011,
Sabado ng umaga nag-outreach
ang ating mga lectors sa Sampagu-
ita Community (St. Jude) sa Taktak
Road, Antipolo. Napakamakabulu-
han ang karanasan nila. 20 pamilya
ang dumalo na biniyayaan hindi lang
ng materyal na mga bagay kundi pati
ang pagkakataong mapalago ang
kanilang kaalaman ukol sa ating pa-
nananampalataya.
Ang katesismo ay pinamunu-
an ni Kuya Jun Solomon, head ng
Evangelization Ministry. 24 na lector
ang tumulong sa gawaing ito. Na-

LIWANAGIN^
natin
Mayroon pa ring bumaba-
tikos sa atin sa pagdarasal kay Inang
Maria. Wika nila, sinasamba raw na-
tin siya na parang Diyos.
Narito ang katotohanan: walang
sinasamba ang mga Katoliko kundi
ang Poong Maykapal lamang. Siya
ang tanging kinikilala nating maka-
pangyarihan sa Lahat, ang Tagapa-
glikha, Tagapagligtas, Panginoon at
hari ng lahat ng nabubuhay. Siya la-
mang ang ating inaawitan, pinupuri,
pinararangalan, at pinasa-
salamatan ng buong panan-
ampalataya at kababaang-
loob. Siya ang pinakamamahal natin
at itinataas nang buong puso, sigla
at init, maging sa tahimik na uri ng
pagdarasal. Ito ang pinakamataas na
paggalang: pagsamba na tinatawag
sa Ingles na “adoration” o “worship”
at sa Latin na “latria”.
Ang mga santo ay ginagalang na-
tin ngunit hindi natin sila kailanman
ipinantay sa Diyos at sinamba. Sila
ay mga namatay sa malalim na kaba-
nalan at tinuturing ng Diyos na Kan-
yang malalapit na kaibigan. Pinara-
rangalan natin sila sa mas mababang
antas kaysa sa Panginoon; at ito ay
tinatawag
sa Ingles
na “ven-
era t ion”
at sa latin,
“dulia”
Si
Maria ay
santo rin, ngunit kakaiba sa lahat.
Siya ay ina ni HesuKristo, na Anak
ng Diyos; dahil dito, siya ay Ina ng
Diyos at Inang espiritwal ng buong
simbahan. Ang pagpaparangal sa
kanya ay mas mataas kaysa sa pag-
galang natin sa lahat ng mga santo,
Ni Maria Martha Lazaro

Christ spent thirty years of his private life with
Our Lady before becoming a public person for three years. Much of Our La-dy’s experience with her Son from birth to manhood had been le unwritten. eir intimate life of 30 years, however, has been manifested in the strength of a mother standing at the foot of the Cross and carried on as a caring mother of the apostles a er the death of their Master. Seeing Christ living an ordi-nary life made Our Lady a witness to how life should be lived in abundance and full of joy while subsisting on a car-penter’s income. (2)Living in constant joy may have de-veloped in her a strong urge to want to show this life to her close friends and neighbors. It is possible to be truly happy here and to be truly living in love. And, since the joy was purely due to Christ, her role would only be serving as a humble guide to the life of her Son. She continues to be a humble “arrow” throughout the generations, consistently pointing to the right path for more than 2,000 years. e Blessed Pope John Paul II was a very close friend of hers, with his 15 daily Rosaries keeping him connected to her care. e wisdom and understanding that the Holy Spirit had bestowed on the Pope will continue to bene t the faithful long a er he’s gone. His life and works show
how, like Mary, he had a great urge to help us learn how to attain salvation while living life in abundance. He gave reminders on who we really are as humans and these were compiled into a set of lectures entitled “ eology of the Body” (TOB). Chris-topher West, an author of books on hu-man love, discussed the TOB in various venues in Metro Manila last June 2011. Commercial magazines have converted the human body into ob-jects to be used and treated like trash, but, the TOB reminds that the human
person, body and soul, has a divine purpose. In his work-book, ‘Freedom to Love’,West gave an outline of the TOB and here are some quotes:
“ e body, in fact and only the body,
is capable of making visible what is in-visible: the spiritual and the divine.” – Pope John Paul II
“And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.” (Gen 2:25)
“ ey experienced sexual desire (eros) only as the desire to love as God loves (agape). ere is no shame (or fear) in Love. “Perfect love casts our fear” (1 Jn 4:18)
“Freedom exists for the sake of love.
Man longs for love more than for free-dom – freedom is the means and love is the end” – Pope John Paul II
Notice that the freedom neces-sary for love also provides an opportu-nity for sin. “When we eradicate our freedom by sinning, we eradicate the freedom necessary to love. If we must chain ourselves to avoid sin, we are not free, we are in chains.
“Sometimes, what is called … ‘love,’ if subjected to searching critical examina-tion, turns out to be, contrary to all ap-pearances, only a form of ‘utilization’ of the person.” – Pope John Paul II Learning the eology of the Body will help us live life to the full and make our joy complete here on earth.
(Ref: West, Christopher “Freedom to Love”, Apply-ing the eology of the Body to life and relationships. 2007. Ascension Press, PO Box 1990. West Chester PA 19380)
In Mary’s womb the Word became Flesh...
so our flesh can be sacred.
“ e body, in fact and only the body, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine.” – Pope John Paul II
Contrary to what was an-nounced at our facebook page, the pilot article for our new Ask Padz section has been postponed. Watch out for its launching in the December issue!

THE MARY MAGDALEN
IN US
Ben, my 8-yr old Albert Einstein wanna-be freaked out when we read “I
Know An Old Lady” (based on a favorite children’s song) illustrated by
Maxie Chambliss. The moment we closed the book, he refused to open
his mouth. You see, the old lady swallowed a fly & other insects & animals be-
sides. When we came to the end of the story, the old lady had just swallowed
a horse! “She’s dead OF COURSE!” & that was the end of it.
Caleb, my 5-yr old Mr. Moneybags himself who loves counting money, among
other things - loves to read “The Foot Book” by Shel Silverstein because it’s
not only about the left foot & the right foot but the red foot & the up foot & the
“many, many feet”! When we come to the “many, many feet” Caleb just has to
start counting all the funny looking feet! He takes pride in counting so many of
them without stopping. Unstoppable Caleb!
Here’s a special list of wonderful titles for children (for beginners to grade
five) that will open new worlds – so wonderful & exciting, you’ll end up
wanting more:

! e visions of Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich are
the world’s greatest source of detail on the life of St. Mary Magdalen. Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824) was a German Augustinian nun, a mystic & stigmatist whose visions were copied down by Clemens Bren-tano (1778-1842), poet/writer of that period. According to the Catholic En-cyclopedia (1910) Mary Magdalen was so called either from the name of the location Magdala near Tiberius, on the west shore of Galilee, or possibly from a Talmudic expression meaning “curl-ing women’s hair,” which the Talmud explains as of an adulteress. Magdalen was very beautiful. Her par-ents died when she was only seven
years old. Even as a child, she was vain beyond expression, proud, self-willed, and a lover of pleasure. In the New Testament, Magdalen is mentioned among the women who ac-companied Christ and ministered to Him (Luke 7:2-3). She was described to have had seven devils cast out of her (Mark 16:9) and according to the four evangelists, she stood at the foot of the cross, assisted at the entombment, and was the " rst recorded witness of the Resurrection.
Magdalen, the “lost pearl”
Once a# er going about teaching, Je-sus was visiting Lazarus and Martha in Bethania with His disciples. During a game that His followers were play-ing, the holy women were carefully searching for a precious pearl that was dropped. A# er a long search, they were
overjoyed to " nd it! From their pearl, lost, carefully sought and joyfully found, Jesus likened Magdalen to that lost pearl. He called her a pearl more precious than many others that have fallen and were lost forever.During Magdalen’s First Conversion (she was undergoing a period of violent interior struggles) in the Mount of In-struction near Gabara and when Jesus exclaimed to the crowd, “Ah, if even one soul would come to Me!” Magdalen

So don’t let the monsoon rains stop you! Pick up an umbrella
& head for the Aklatan ni Maria right here in our Parish. Bor-
row books! Be transformed!
Aklatan ni Maria is open every Saturday, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Let’s play a game. Let’s call
that game, say, Pinoy Henyo.
You play the part of the guy
who has the answer on paper, taped
on his forehead; and I’ll help you
guess what it is. You have 30 sec-
onds… go!
Tao ba ‘to!? Oo!
Ahm, uhm... Sikat ba, sikat!? Oo!
Nagkaroon ng pelikula!? Oo!
Artista!? Hindi!!
Character sa pelikula!? Err..Oo!
Aahmm, aahm... May kakaibang
pangalan!? Puwede, puwede!
(Now shrieking in excitement)
Aaah! Aaaaaah! May kilalang
costume!?Oo!
Tinatawag pag may problema at
kalaban!?Oo!
(Buzzer goes off as the host an-
nounces a commercial break)
This is just one way I’d imag-
ine how you as a Pinoy Henyo con-
testant would be like, under all the
pressure of asking the right questions
while at the same time maintaining
poise on national television. There
could be a million things wrong with
the above scenario: you might say
“30 seconds wasn’t enough in the
fi rst place,” or “I would have defi -
nitely asked better questions than
those, minus the aahs and umms,”
and “Please, I’d never shriek like
that, and the answer is pretty ob-
vious,” but that’s the thing about
how I pictured your character - you
never had the chance to show me
otherwise.
Now I picture you wonder-
ing if this article is even fi t for a
Marian theme and how it’s going
to get there. This one, I’d have
to say explicitly: our Mother Mary
herself is a character that has been
depicted in ways that have never
changed, in styles which audiences
have accepted and gotten used to.
Mary can’t literally plan otherwise.
That is, until I witnessed one group
who chose a different angle: TeKaS.
If you would recall, TeKaS (com-
posed of Sto. Kristo Gospel Choir
members) was the theatre group
that garnered fi rst prize in the
Teatro Maria contest from last Fies-
ta’s activities. They presented the
play entitled, “Joseph and Mary: A
Different Kind of Love Story,” dra-
matically (and musically) shedding
light onto what Mary and Joseph as
a couple and as individuals might
have felt after the Annunciation. In
my discourse with the play’s direc-
tor and playwright, Mr. Eric Santos,

Supposedly, for the previous issue of Tugon, I was to make a review of the album, “One True God” by NewSong, as tasked by our dear editor-in-chief, but I was not able to get myself a copy in time, so I had to do the Desperation review while waiting. Since it was new, there were no copies of it in the House of Praise music store or any of the local record bars. Purchasing online via iTunes was impossible because it wasn’t available for purchase and download in our country, so I had no choice but
to place an order online via their offi cial website and have it shipped from
the United States. Finally, after a month of waiting, the package arrived from the US: the two-CD bundle of NewSong’s new album, “One True God”.
NewSong is a Contemporary Christian Music group originally composed of current members Eddie Carswell, Billy Goodwin, and former members Eddie Middleton and Bobby Apon.1 Founded in 1981 at Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, the band has garnered eight GMA Dove Award nominations. They are the founders of the Winter Jam Tour Spectacular, the United States’ largest annual Christian music tour.
Newsong’s album, to simply state it, is awesome. To expound further, it’s an inspirational album commercialized enough to be catchy and easily appreciated, but not too much to be called tacky or too mainstream pop - and this is what makes it awesome.
Sound quality in this album is nothing less than exceptional. The vocals, instruments, everything: even the packaging of the album was immaculate. What would you expect from a band who’s been playing and inspiring for 30 years and is still doing so successfully?
Listening to the songs in this album, you feel like you are attending a retreat. The songs deliver messages in a way that I have not experienced with any other album, ever. One can describe it only after listening and appreciating the record. I liked all the songs in this album – every single one of them, which is a very rare thing, even for albums made by any of my favorite bands. This may have been due to the fact
that I waited anxiously for the arrival of this album, and I have been listening to it for more than a month now, which most probably is the reason it has grown on me.
But the thing I like the most in this album is the fact that it’s a two-CD bundle. Why? It’s a way for the band to spread the word- to inspire, to awaken and to kindle the love for God and others in this album. The group recommends that the other CD included in the package is to be shared to friends and be passed on to people you believe have the need to be touched by God. That’s what I did to mine- I gave it to a very dear friend and told her that the message needs to be spread to everyone. I hope it is still being passed around to this day and that the messages of the album reach those people in need.
Thus, I refuse to give a rating to this album. I admit I am once again blinded with unconditional love for this collection so my rating would be emotionally-laden and a mere number will not give justice to the record. The best way is to know how good the album really is: by listening to the album yourself. I just hope it’s already available here in our local record bars. But if after reading this review I get you so hyped about this album (which I really hope I did), just tap me whenever or wherever you see me and we’ll see how I can lend you my remaining copy of the album. Keep the peace and rock on!

El Papa esta aqui!” In
english, Yes, yes, yes,
The Pope is here! We
pushed our way into
the crowd to get
close to the railings that secured
the way of the Papal motorcade.
And after much waiting, there he
was, in front of our very eyes, a
three second close encounter, the
Holy Father in his pope mobile,
waving at all of us.
We, the 25 member-delegation
from the Diocese of Antipolo,
started our journey for the World
Youth Day on August 9. It did
not just signify the start of a
geographical displacement, but
also the unraveling of the theme
“Planted and built up in Jesus
Christ, Firm in the faith,” to all of
us. It took us approximately thirty
hours of transit to get to
Torreorgaz, Spain, where we
spent a week for our Days in the
Diocese. Torreorgaz is a 4-hour bus
ride from Madrid airport, a small
town in the province of Caceres,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Exhausted, and in
much need of shower, we arrived
at nine in the evening and we were
overwhelmed by what greeted us.
The townspeople were gathered
outside our bus, singing “Viva
Espana!” in a marching tune,
complete with percussion. Upon
getting down from the bus with our
luggage, they put hats on our heads
and gave us ‘doble besos’ each.
Then we marched to the façade of
their parish, and they danced with
all of us before proceeding to the
welcoming program
inside the church. We felt the
love of God through the people of
Torreorgaz right away, as headed by
their parish priest, Padre Roberto.
Never in my life had I witnessed
such a welcome.
Besides befriending all of us, the
people of Torreorgaz were mobilized
by Padre Roberto to ensure that
we were all well taken care of. We
were always provided our meals,
even our take away lunches,
including our transportation from
and to Torreorgaz for our outside
trips. I will never forget the family
I found in my foster mothers,
Abuelita Emiliana, and Tita
Margarita Bermejo. They treated
us as family, always hugging and
kissing us. Their care will always
be remembered in my heart. continued on page10
he expressed this confl ict exactly:
“The Annunciation was obviously a
wonderful and happy experience for
Mary, but we imagined it must have
been troubling for her as well… Con-
sidering the very few details found
in the Gospels about (Joseph), how
exactly did he fi nd out that Mary
was pregnant and what went on in
his mind after that? This seemed to
be a topic rarely explored by oth-
ers. The crisis Joseph and Mary un-
derwent separately must have been
terrible.” (Santos, 2011)
So you see, Mary’s persona is woven
cloth: many understand her for the
“design” she explicitly reveals, but
looking closely, one can fi nd her in-
tricately sewn, complicated person-
al life and the inner struggles that
make it whole. Saying “yes” during
the annunciation was one answer
fi lled with risks as her claims could
have been easily deemed as heresy
or lunacy, and she could have been
accused with adultery and stoned
to death. Joseph could have left or
publicly rejected her. Unlike in most
portrayals of this situation, the re-
ality was that it was a hard “yes”
to say. Now we see how this hum-
ble woman actually possesses more
courage and composure-under-pres-
sure than the average superhero we
idolize and lavishly brand with gal-
lantry, and how little we understand
how hard it is to trust the Lord like
she did, confi dent that He won’t
abandon her no matter how impos-
sible the situation may seem.
“So, if only because (the
play) showed her in that

of sorts. Looking back, I
was surprised by and grateful for the
realization that we were all able to
go through such taxing activities, in
spite of the extremities in weather
changes(ave. temperature reaches
43 degrees Celsius). And during
the Vigil itself, there was a drastic
drop in temperature, accompanied
by a hurricane. Yet the spirit of
more or less one million and a half
youth gathered in Cuatro Vientos,
did not waver.
The vigil had to be paused due to
the presence of strong winds and
rain. I remember the commentator
asking us to pray for a calmer
weather and upon huddling
together in our groups praying,
there came a sudden silence in the
weather. This gave everyone goose
bumps, and we all cheered out
loud “Benedicto!” and “Esta es,
la juventud del Papa!” (This is the
youth of the Pope!)
At the concluding mass the morning
after the vigil, Pope Benedict gave
us his blessing that was not solely
for us present there, but also for
our loved ones we have left at our
homes. He also invited all of us
to be bold witnesses of Christian
living, to fear not facing the truth
of the faith and choosing to be fi rm ! Youth Day is truly an unforgettable
experience. The singing and
cheering in the streets and metros
of Madrid may now have quieted
as we pilgrims are now back in our
own homes, but it will continue to
resonate in our minds, reminding us
of how great God’s love is. It was a
manifestation of the universality of
our faith, as the tradition of Pope
John Paul II’s efforts of reclaiming
the youth for God is continued.
“You are pilgrims, and you are
meant to go back changed to face
the challenges of tomorrow,”
Fr. Sandy told us before leaving
Torreorgaz. It was said that once
God has touched you, you would
never be the same again. I will
always be grateful for having been
chosen and supported by the Parish
to take part of such an experience.

beginning of a renewed life in the

was so moved to y to Him at once, but her companions held her back. Jesus, aware of Magdalen’s agitation, uttered words of consolation meant only for her. He said, “If even one germ of pen-ance, of contrition, of love, of faith, of hope has, in consequence of My words, fallen upon some poor, erring heart, it will bear fruit, it will be set down in fa-vor of that poor sinner, it will live and increase. I myself shall nourish it, shall cultivate it, shall present it to My father.”
Magdalen’s First Anointing of Jesus
When Jesus and His disciples went to Simon of Zabulon’s house where a feast was prepared for Him, Magda-len suddenly darted into the hall with her companions. Her head veiled, car-rying a little white ask closed with a tiny bunch of aromatic herbs instead of a stopper, she glided towards Jesus and behind His back poured the contents of her little ask over His head. ! en with the end of her veil, she smoothed Jesus’ head to arrest the over ow of the ointment. ! e air was redolent with the fragrance of the ointment.
Simon and the guests were scandalized. But Jesus said, “Simon, I know what thou art thinking! ! ou thinkest it im-proper that I should allow this woman to anoint My head. ! ou art thinking that she is a sinner, but thou art wrong. She, out of love, has ful# lled what thou didst leave undone. ! ou hast not shown Me the honor due to guests.” ! en He turned to Magdalen and said, “Go in peace! Much has been forgiven thee.”
Second Conversion
Magdalen was greatly changed since her second conversion when evil spir-

pagpaparangal ng Diyos. Kay Maria
inaalay natin ang “hyperdulia”.
Kung ihahambing sa init
ang tatlong antas ng pagpaparangal,
ang pagsamba sa Diyos ay parang
malakas na apoy na nagliliyab; ang
pagpaparangal kay Maria ay tila mga

What is Mary’s role in your life;
who is she to you?
“Casting for Mary was the main
problem... Then, Manilyn (whom
I had never heard sing before and
although a Front of House regular,
had never appeared in any TeKaS
play) had a go at it, and I knew we
fi nally had our Mary.” (Santos, 2011)

we’ve all been there. But when
you have no playwright or theatre
group and specifi c Biblical accounts
and studies to explain who you re-

self to be of any worth? It’s simple:
play your part, just as Mother Mary
did hers. God reveals our purpose,
sometimes in unexpected ways. Can
you handle the pressure?

Liwanagin din natin na kapag
tayo ay nagdarasal sa harap ng isang
imahen, hindi tayo nananalangin sa
litrato o istatwa o figurin mismo, kun-
di sa mga banal na tao na kanilang
nilalarawan. “Visual aid” lamang sila

ng wastong paggalang sa mga santo,
lalo na kay Inang Maria, lalong na-
papalapit ang mga mananampalataya
kay Hesus.

its departed her body one by one. On the way home from her conversion, Magdalen joined the holy women on foot; and unaccustomed to such travelling, her feet bled. She was pale and exhausted from weeping. She could not resist expressing her gratitude to Jesus so she went over an hour’s journey to meet Him, threw herself at His feet, and bedewed them with repentant tears. Je-sus raised her and addressed to her words of kindness. She followed Jesus everywhere, sat at His feet, stood and waited for Him.
She thought of Him alone, saw Him alone, knew only her Redeemer and her own sins. Let us not lose sight of our Lord’s loving and merciful countenance when we are in the throes of sin, keeping in mind Jesus’ gentle admonition to Mary Magdalen to “go and sin no more.” Because we love Him so, we too will be transformed.
