This major retrospective celebrates the extraordinary talent ofCumbrian artist Percy Kelly (1918-1993). For the first time majorexamples of Kelly’s artistic output are brought together in a rich displayof over 100 works, many of which have not been on display before. The exhibition spans over 65 years from 1928 aged 9 up to his deathin 1993 aged 74.

The exhibition charts every facet of Kelly’s artistic career including hislove of the Cumbrian lakes, fells, coast, villages and industry captured in expressive charcoal and luminous watercolour. Discover dramaticlinear panoramas, small intimate compositions, bold prints, exquisitecalligraphy, beautifully illustrated prolific letters and sensitive flowerstudies all on show in this unmissable tribute to one of Cumbria’s best-loved artists.

The exhibition is specially curated by Chris Wadsworth, the leadingexpert on the life and work of Percy Kelly.

Paul Leith: Technicolour Carlisle

Carlisle based artist Paul Leith worked as an illustrator for thirtyyears for some of the biggest newspapers and magazines in the country. In his retirement he has turned his unique view of the world to the streets of Carlisle, creating colourful workscelebrating the city.

See these works on public display for the first time, exploring Paul’sjourney from creating work for others, to making art for himself.

The framed felt works in the exhibition are available to purchase.

Enthusiastic artist Karen MacDougall has created many large pictures and banners depicting events and shewill work with you to create your own masterpiece. You will usesheep's wool fibres, water, soap and your fingers to magic the fibresinto fabric. We will use different coloured fibres, needle punch andother materials to create different effects. This workshop is suitablefor beginners as well as people with felt-making experience.

With artist Deborah Wainwright, you will createa mixed media page using collage, various mediumsincluding acrylic paint, oil pastels, inks, stencils andstamps, building layers upon layers to give depthand texture to your page, and finishing with a motivational quote. In this special workshop, experienced artists andteachers Patrick and Anne will share their ideasand techniques for making the most of solidgraphite sticks, exploring the potential of graphiteas a medium in its own right to produce tone and texture. A huge range of textures can be created, including natural materials and buildings,particularly stonework and timber. Finished piecesare beautifully detailed and can be achieved byanyone with the right tuition. This course welcomes beginners whowill be taught basic skills and more experienced artists to share ideas.

In 2014 John Mather celebrated his 60th birthday by challenging himself to swim the length of all seventeen lakes contained within theEnglish Lake District, including lake Windermere - the longest naturallake in England.

Over the course of two years John estimates he swam a total distanceof 40 miles, which is greater than the distance of crossing the English Channel.

In this talk John will share withyou his unforgettable journey;highlighting the beauty andfragility of this wonderful landand the fleeting glimpses ofrarely seen wildlife in hope toencourage others swimmers todive in and swim in our stunninglakes and natural water sources.

Tues 3rd Oct 2017Dove Cottage was cold and bare upon William and Dorothy’s arrivalin 1799 and the siblings’ first few weeks there were marked by hardwork to transform the house into a ‘comfortable dwelling.’

The next eight and a half years the siblings spent at the little whitecottage in Town End are marked by domestic happiness and greatliterary productivity, Dorothy recording everything in her wonderfulGrasmere Journals.

In this talk The WordsworthTrust will pay homage to thetreasure chest of wonderful and ever current poetry andwritings about man, nature,thoughts and society, as well asexploring 21st century ideas.

Since then, volunteers from all overNorth Cumbria have sent aid andworked on projects in Northern France, Greece and Turkey.

Hadrian’s Cavalry: Day of Talks

Join a line up of expert speakers for a fascinating day of talks exploringthe importance and role of Roman cavalry in Carlisle, along the walland across the Empire. Speakers include:

Join us for a six-month journey with award-winning adventurer JohnPilkington. Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Iran are in the news for all thewrong reasons. In 2009, just before the present violence in Syria andIraq, John unravelled a picture quite different from the news stories ofthe time as he followed a winding route via the Euphrates, Kurdistanand the Valleys of the Assassins to finisheventually on the Persian Gulf. He met a spectacular variety of people - Druze,Maronites, Arabs, Kurds, Yazidis and bothShia and Sunni Iranians - and despite theirdifferences he often found them workingtogether to survive the harsh climate andmake ends meet.

Sat 21st Oct 2017Join Priya Sundar and a group of professionalmusicians for a performance of Bharatanatyam, a beautiful Indian classical dance form regarded as mother of many other Indian dances. Hindureligious themes and spiritual ideas will beexplored in the dance, through excellent footworkand impressive gestures, beautiful expressions andspectacular costume. Accompanists will include a singer and musicians, including drums, stringinstruments and flute.

There will be two performances on the day. The 4pm performance willbe aimed at families and children and last for one hour, and the 7pmwill be for adults and will be in two forty minute performances withan interval in between.

THe Community Gallery is now open! Located in the Border Galleries,it is a bespoke space dedicated to displaying artwork created bydifferent youth and community groups.

The space can be adaptable and used as an informal learning space, can host object handling sessions, small presentation events or toshowcase a special project.
