The 2014 – 2015 academic year is drawing to a close, and my days as Interim Director are num-bered. It has been enjoyable working with the
faculty, staff, and student body in the Tull School and getting to meet so many supportive alumni and friends.
The big news, of course, is that we were successful in hiring a new Director of the Tull School, Ted Christensen, who will join us this sum-mer. An article about Ted appears in this newsletter.
I am a firm believer that our successes today are traceable to decisions made a long time ago. So, to whoever admitted Ted to our doctoral program many years ago, the Tull School says “thank you.” He has made his way in life and now returns to lead us. For that we are grateful. I am confident that we will all benefit from Ted’s commitment to excellence and his loyalty to the Tull School.
Our alumni and friends continue to support us with their gifts and their presence

Ted Christensen appointed new Director of Tull SchoolAfter 20 years, Ted Christensen is returning home to the Tull School
of Accounting. In June of 1991, Ted came to Athens with his wife,
Donna, and their two sons to begin the doctoral program. Prior to
coming to UGA, Ted had earned a bach-
elor’s degree in accounting at San Jose State
University and worked for a regional public
accounting firm in California before going
to Brigham Young University (BYU) for a
MAcc degree in tax. While he was a student
at BYU, he had the opportunity to teach at
a local community college and decided that
teaching accounting was even more fun than
doing accounting, which lead him to UGA
to earn a Ph.D. When he came to Athens the
first time, he never imagined that 24 years later he would return to UGA
as a faculty member. (Actually, he says he dreamed about it but never

When Ted began the doctoral program in 1991, he was
fortunate to work with several of the then “new” faculty
members: Linda and Michael Bamber and Jenny and Ken
Gaver. When the Christensens came to UGA, they knew their
family wasn’t complete. However, they didn’t want to have a
four-year gap between their kids, so the family expanded by
two more sons while they were in Athens.
Upon completing the doctoral program in 1995, Ted took
his first job as an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve
University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he taught just about
every course offered (from managerial and cost accounting to
introductory and intermediate financial accounting to corpo-
rate tax).
After five years in Ohio and the birth of a fifth son, Ted
returned as a faculty member to one of his alma maters, BYU,
where he has taught for the past 15 years. Fortunately, Ted
has been able to focus his teaching and research in the finan-
cial accounting area during his time at BYU. While five sons
is a large family by just about anyone’s standards, Ted always

Ted and his family lived in Verona, Italy in 2007 while Ted taught in a study abroad program. L-R: Scott, Stephanie, Dallin, Matt, Tyler, Josh, Donna, and Ted
wanted a daughter and was finally able to convince Donna
to to try for a girl. She was somewhat reluctant because she
believed they were “only capable of producing male off-
spring.” Fortunately, the gamble paid off and they finally had
a daughter shortly after moving to BYU. While Ted has been
a faculty member at BYU, he and his family have enjoyed sev-
eral adventures as a result of opportunities to teach at other
schools. Twice he was able to teach in a semester-long study
abroad program in Italy (the spring semester of 2007 and the
fall semester of 2011). He taught a doctoral seminar at the
University of Utah in the fall of 2012 and he taught advanced
financial accounting in a summer program at Santa Clara
University in California for over 10 years. Last year, he was a
visiting professor at the University of Michigan.
Ted enjoys cycling and competing in triathlons and is the
author of numerous academic articles and two textbooks. The
boys have all “left the nest” and the Christensens return to
Athens with their daughter, Stephanie, who will begin high
school this fall. Although leaving their sons and two grand-
children behind in Utah won’t be easy, they are excited to
return to Athens to another of Ted’s alma maters!

on campus. Our faculty remains dedicated to excellence in teaching and research. As a faculty member, I tend to be focused on my own work and, as a result, miss many of my colleagues’ achievements. As Director, I read everyone’s per-formance report. It is eye-opening to see the magnitude of
their research and service contributions at the national and international levels. Moreover, student ratings of their teaching confirm my belief that our faculty don’t trade off teaching and research effort – they excel at both!
Our undergraduate and MAcc students continue to take full advantage of the great opportunity to study at the Tull School. In the last newsletter, I reported that they passed the CPA exam at an extraordinary first-time pass rate of 84%. It would be unreasonable to expect improvement, right?
Well, the most recent statistics just reported that they passed at an 86.2% rate, finishing third among all large programs. Among all large public programs, we were second only to those pesky Wisconsin Badgers.
Our Ph.D. program also continues to place well and gener-ate award-winning students. Steve Utke will join the faculty at the University of Connecticut this fall. Also, I am happy to announce that one of our doctoral students, Lisa Hinson, recently learned that her dissertation year will be funded by the prestigious Deloitte Foundation’s Doctoral Fellowship Program which awards only ten such fellowships each year. Our faculty have the privilege of working with these students for five years, teaching them to follow our career paths. So, their achievements are especially meaningful to us.
Thank you for your support during this past year. I look forward to rejoining the faculty. Please join me in welcoming Ted Christensen as he steps into this very important role.

Tarpley named Terry Academic Advisor of the Year
Tull’s Christie Tarpley has received the 2015 Terry College of Business Academic Advisor of the Year Award. A graduate of Terry her-self, Christie was a student employee in the College while pursuing her degree in Management. Upon gradu-ation in May of 2013, she was hired by Tull, originally as an assistant for the MAcc program, but was quickly promoted to undergradu-ate advisor. Proving herself
in both positions, she was a natural fit when the Program Coordinator position for the MAcc program opened, and she has excelled advising both undergraduate and graduate students. The Terry College will formally honor Christie for this award at the Terry College Honors Day in April, and will nominate her for the university-wide advising award in January 2016.
