Tumwater School District Board of Directors presents an invitation to apply for the position
of
SUPERINTENDENT

The Position The Tumwater School District Board of Directors is seeking candidates with the following skills and qualifications: Background and experience essential for excellence in educational leadership; Demonstrated ability to earn and maintain trust; Respect for TSD staff and community with an approachable personality, proficient communication
and listening skills, honesty, and integrity; An informed sensitivity to diversity and a commitment to educational equity; A collaborative leadership style that inspires and builds teamwork and trust among all stakeholders; A love for students and belief that all can learn; A vision for instructional leadership with the ability to see the big picture, “think outside of the box”
to find creative solutions to challenges, and use data to inform decisions; Demonstrated capability to recognize, build and maintain collaborative relationships with
community partners; and, Ability to provide strong financial, fiscally responsible District oversight, with a moderate outlook and
an understanding of the budgeting process and available, potential resources. Additionally, the Board of Directors requires the successful candidate possess a current Superintendent Certificate. The Board prefers the Superintendent live within the boundaries of Tumwater School District. The Board of Directors will negotiate a multi-year contract with a competitive salary, commensurate with local and like-sized Washington state school districts.
The Community
The community of Tumwater is one of the oldest in the
state—the earliest settlement was located near the
Deschutes River at the end of the Oregon Trail. Originally
called New Market, Tumwater has long been close to the
center of government and is located along the busy
commercial path between Seattle/Tacoma and Portland.
The population of Tumwater is 22,973.
The community, with room for development and proximity
to the Capitol campus, is expanding steadily with the
continuing additions of state offices and agencies. Meanwhile, residential development is growing as
many beautiful areas are available for homes. The community is one of the most attractive for families
anywhere in the state.
Tumwater is situated close to such recreational wonders as Mt. Rainier, Puget Sound, the Olympic and
Cascade mountain ranges, and the Pacific Ocean. The Tumwater area has many educational and
cultural opportunities available.

Board of Directors The Tumwater School Board consists of five Board members, each elected to serve four-year terms. Members of the Tumwater School Board must live in one of the five director districts. In addition to the five Board members, Tumwater is also represented by three, non-voting student representatives. The student representatives are selected by the high schools to attend all evening meetings and participate in Board discussions. The District
Tumwater School District has an enrollment of over 6,700 students and 800 staff members. The
District covers a total of 117 square miles.
Students attend classes at one of our six elementary schools, two middle schools or four high schools
(two comprehensive, two alternative learning
programs.) The District provides teaching staff for the
Tumwater West Education and Early Childhood
Learning Centers, and oversees the New Market Skills
Center located within the District.
Tumwater provides programs, curriculum and services
that enrich student learning at all levels. Services are
provided to students with a wide range of needs. The schools offer a variety of activities in athletics,
fine arts, and academic areas.
Academic results are strong in Tumwater School District with state assessment scores at or near the
top of the county in each grade level. Tumwater schools have been recognized with many state and
national awards for academic improvement and/or excellence.
